Abstract

A microbrowser such as web-enabled wireless telephones and personal digital assistants allows a user to configure types of objects to be blocked from download including object memory consumption, display area, download time, and restrictions on animated images and executable scripts. Microbrowser state conditions such as battery level and network connection mode are considered when providing said limitations such that more restrictions may be placed during low battery periods to maximize battery life. For example, during low battery conditions or analog connection mode, a user may configure an enhanced microbrowser not to download advertisements, run scripts or animated objects in order to maximize remaining battery life. In another example, a user may configure an enhanced microbrowser to block the download of objects containing audio, or which will occupy more than a certain percentage of the available display area.

Claims

1. A dynamic browsing governor for a microbrowser driven by user preferences and the state of the microbrowser, said microbrowser having an ability to request a plurality of web objects from a server, to receive web objects from a server, and to display, play or otherwise execute web objects, said dynamic browsing governor comprising:

an advertisement configuration data set containing at least one limitation for receipt of web objects and containing at least one microbrowser state condition; and

an advertisement configuration data set transmitter for sending said advertisement configuration data to a server such that a server may consider said advertisement configuration data set when selecting and transmitting web objects back to said microbrowser.

2. The dynamic browsing governor as set forth in claim 1 wherein said advertisement configuration data set transmitter is adapted to send said advertisement configuration data set with a page request.

3. The dynamic browsing governor as set forth in claim 1 wherein said advertisement configuration data set transmitter is adapted to send said advertisement configuration data responsive to receipt of an advertisement configuration data request from a server.

4. The dynamic browsing governor as set forth in claim 1 wherein said advertisement configuration data set is adapted to contain a battery condition indication.

5. The dynamic browsing governor as set forth in claim 1 wherein said advertisement configuration data set is adapted to contain a network connection mode indicator.

6. The dynamic browsing governor as set forth in claim 1 wherein said advertisement configuration data set is adapted to contain an indication of maximum transmission time of said advertisement.

7. The dynamic browsing governor as set forth in claim 1 wherein said advertisement configuration data set is adapted to contain a maximum number of display colors indication.

8. The dynamic browsing governor as set forth in claim 1 wherein said advertisement configuration data set is adapted to contain a maximum display area indicator.

9. The dynamic browsing governor as set forth in claim 1 wherein said advertisement configuration data set is adapted to contain limitation indicators selected from the group of a maximum memory consumption indicator, a restriction on executable code indicator, and a restriction on animated images indicator.

10. A dynamic serving governor for a server of microbrowser driven by user preferences and the state of the microbrowser, said server having an ability to receive request a plurality of web objects from a microbrowser and to transmit web objects to a microbrowser, said dynamic serving governor comprising:

an advertisement configuration data set receiver for receiving from a microbrowser a advertisement configuration data set containing at least one limitation for receipt of web objects and at least one microbrowser state condition; and

a web object selector for selecting for transmission web objects which meet said ACD limitations.

11. The dynamic serving governor as set forth in claim 10 wherein said advertisement configuration data set receiver is adapted to receive said advertisement configuration data set with a page request.

12. The dynamic serving governor as set forth in claim 10 wherein said advertisement configuration data set receiver is adapted to receive said advertisement configuration data set in the form of a cookie.

13. The dynamic serving governor as set forth in claim 10 wherein said advertisement configuration data set receiver is adapted to request said advertisement configuration data set from a microbrowser.

14. The dynamic serving governor as set forth in claim 10 wherein said web object selector adapted to select web objects which match a battery condition indication.

15. The dynamic serving governor as set forth in claim 10 wherein said web object selector adapted to select web objects which match network connection mode indication.

16. The dynamic serving governor as set forth in claim 10 wherein said web object selector adapted to select web objects which match a maximum transmission time indication.

17. The dynamic serving governor as set forth in claim 10 wherein said web object selector adapted to select web objects which match a maximum number of display colors indicator.

18. The dynamic serving governor as set forth in claim 10 wherein said web object selector adapted to select web objects which match a maximum display area indicator.

The dynamic serving governor as set forth in claim 10 wherein said web object selector adapted to select web objects which match at least one web object characteristic selected from the group of a maximum memory consumption indicator, a restriction on executable code indicator, and a restriction on animated images indicator.
