Abstract

The current invention provides an improved permeable cement composition for formation of downhole sand screens. The improved composition includes an effective amount of a surfactant. Addition of the surfactant to the permeable cement composition yields at least a pumpable slurry with a minimal amount of water or brine solution.

Claims

1. A permeable cement composition having a permeability of about 1 darcy to about 50 darcies and a uniform compressive strength of about 345 KPa to about 13790 KPa.

2. The permeable cement composition of claim 1, having a permeability of about 10 darcies to about 50 darcies and a uniform compressive strength of about 689 KPa to about 13790 KPa.

3. A permeable cement composition comprising:

a hydraulic cement;

graded sand;

particulate matter selected from the group consisting of gilsonite, oil soluble particles and mixtures thereof; and

, wherein the cement composition has a permeability of about 1 darcy to about 50 darcies and a uniform compressive strength of about 345 KPa to about 13790 KPa.

4. The permeable cement of claim 3, wherein said graded sand comprises from about 5 parts by weight to about 12 parts by weight per part diluent.

5. The permeable cement of claim 4, wherein said graded sand is sand having mesh sizes between about 100 mesh and about 6 mesh.

6. A composition for forming a permeable cement sand screen in a downhole environment comprising:

a hydraulic cement;

graded sand;

a diluent; and

,

an effective amount of surfactant.

7. The composition of claim 6, wherein the graded sanded has mesh sizes ranging from about 100 mesh to 6 mesh.

8. The composition of claim 6, wherein the diluent is selected from the group consisting of water and brine.

9. The composition of claim 6, wherein the hydraulic cement is selected from the group consisting of:

Portland cements, microfine cements, pozzolana cements, gypsum cements, high aluminum content cements, silica cements, high alkalinity cements and mixtures thereof.

10. The composition of claim 6, wherein the composition is a slurry comprising one to three parts by weight hydraulic cement per part diluent, five to twelve parts by weight graded sand per part diluent, and an effective amount of surfactant.

11. The composition of claim 10, wherein the surfactant comprises from 0.01 to 5 percent by weight of the composition.

12. The composition of claim 6, wherein the surfactant is selected from the group consisting of surfactants corresponding to the following formulas:

RO(CH₂CH₂O)_nR′

where R and R′

are alkyl groups and n is an integer in the range of about 5 to about 50;

RPhO(OCH₂CH₂)_mOH, wherein R is an alkyl group having from about 5 to about 30 carbon atoms, Ph is phenyl and m is an integer in the range of from about 5 to about 50;

R₁(OR₂)_nSO₃X, wherein R₁ is selected from the group consisting of alkyl groups having from 1 to about 30 carbon atoms, cycloalkyl groups having 5 or 6 carbon atoms, C₁-C₄ alkyl substituted cycloalkyl groups, phenyl, alkyl substituted phenol of the general formula (R₃)_aPh—

, wherein Ph is phenyl, R₃ is an alkyl group having from 1 to about 18 carbon atoms and a is an integer of from 1 to 3, and phenyl-alkyl groups wherein the alkyl groups have from 1 to about 18 carbon atoms and the phenyl-alkyl groups have a total of from about 8 to about 28 carbon atoms;

R₂ is a substituted ethylene group of the formula —

CH₂CH₂R₄, wherein R₄ is selected from hydrogen, methyl, ethyl or mixtures thereof;

n is a number from 0 to about 40 provided that when R₁ is phenyl or alkyl substituted phenyl, n is at least 1; and

X is any compatible cation;

Ph(OR₆)_oSO₃X, wherein R₅ is an alkyl radical having in the range of from 1 to about 9 carbon atoms, R₆ is the group —

, o is an integer from about 10 to about 20 and X is a compatible cation;

R₇(OR₈)_pSO₃X, wherein R₇ is an alkyl group having in the range of from about 5 to about 20 carbon atoms, R₈ is the group —

13. A composition for forming a downhole permeable cement sand screen comprising:

diluent;

one to three parts by weight hydraulic cement per part diluent;

five to twelve parts by weight graded sand per part diluent; and

,

an effective amount of a surfactant.

14. The composition of claim 13, wherein the graded sanded has mesh sizes ranging from about 100 mesh to 6 mesh.

15. The composition of claim 13, wherein the diluent is selected from the group consisting of water and brine.

16. The composition of claim 13, wherein the hydraulic cement is selected from the group consisting of:

Portland cements, microfine cements, pozzolana cements, gypsum cements, high aluminum content cements, silica cements, high alkalinity cements and mixtures thereof.

17. The composition of claim 13, wherein the surfactant comprises from 0.01 to 5 percent by weight of the composition.

18. The composition of claim 13, wherein the surfactant is selected from the group consisting of surfactants corresponding to the following formulas:

RO(CH₂CH₂O)_nR′

where R and R′

are alkyl groups and n is an integer in the range of about 5 to about 50;

RPhO(OCH₂CH₂)_mOH, wherein R is an alkyl group having from about 5 to about 30 carbon atoms, Ph is phenyl and m is an integer in the range of from about 5 to about 50;

R₁(OR₂)_nSO₃X, wherein R₁ is selected from the group consisting of alkyl groups having from 1 to about 30 carbon atoms, cycloalkyl groups having 5 or 6 carbon atoms, C₁-C₄ alkyl substituted cycloalkyl groups, phenyl, alkyl substituted phenol of the general formula (R₃)_aPh—

, wherein Ph is phenyl, R₃ is an alkyl group having from 1 to about 18 carbon atoms and a is an integer of from 1 to 3, and phenyl-alkyl groups wherein the alkyl groups have from 1 to about 18 carbon atoms and the phenyl-alkyl groups have a total of from about 8 to about 28 carbon atoms;

R₂ is a substituted ethylene group of the formula —

CH₂CH₂R₄, wherein R₄ is selected from hydrogen, methyl, ethyl or mixtures thereof;

n is a number from 0 to about 40 provided that when R₁ is phenyl or alkyl substituted phenyl, n is at least 1; and

X is any compatible cation;
