Abstract

A stapling device for a surgical endoscopic device provided with at least one flexible portion, comprising a staple-firing portion and an anvil portion, wherein one of the staple firing portions and one of the anvil portions are located longitudinally displaced from one another along the longitudinal axis of the endoscopic device, with at least a part of said flexible portion between them. The parts of the stapling device are in correct working relationship when one or more alignment and/or locking pins or screws that are stored in one of the staple firing portions or one of the anvil portions are extended and engage and lock or screw into receptacles that have been provided on the other of the staple firing portion or of the anvil portion.

42. A method for locking together a staple-firing portion of a stapling device with an anvil portion, said method comprising the following steps:

providing in said staple-firing portion or said anvil portion one or more locking members;

providing one or more receptacles on the other of said staple firing portion or said anvil portion;

extending one or more of said locking members from their original location;

engaging said one or more extended locking members into said one or more receptacles; and

locking said one or more extended locking members in said one or more receptacles, thereby locking together said staple-firing portion and said anvil portion.

43. A method according to claim 42, wherein the locking members can be extended and retracted from the portion of the stapling device in which they are stored.

44. A method according to claim 42, wherein the locking members can be locked in and released from the receptacles that are provided in the portion of the stapling device.

45. A method according to claim 42, wherein an entrance to the receptacle is beveled, thereby guiding the locking member into said receptacle.

46. A method according to claim 42, wherein the locking members are stored in the anvil portion.

47. A method according to claim 42, wherein the locking members are stored in the staple-firing portion portion.

48. A method according to claim 42, wherein the operation of the staple firing portion is enabled by locking the locking members in the receptacles.

49. A method according to claim 42, wherein the locking members are manufactured such that they can be broken by pulling the staple-firing portion and the anvil portion of the stapling device apart.

50. A method according to claim 42, wherein the locking members comprise one or more locking pins.

51. A method according to claim 42, wherein the locking members comprise one or more screws.

52. A method according to claim 50, wherein a dual rack and single pinion system is employed to advance and retract the locking pins.

53. A method according to claim 50, wherein an actuator mechanism is employed to advance and retract the locking pins.

54. A method according to claim 50, wherein at least one of the receptacles are provided with latches and springs, for biasing said latches in the desirable direction for latching onto the locking pins.

55. A method according to claim 54, wherein the latches comprise pawls.

56. A method according to claim 54, wherein the springs comprise leaf springs.

57. A method according to claim 55, wherein the pawls are released from the locking pins by components of the cam assembly of the staple-firing portion of the stapling device

58. A method according to claim 50, wherein two locking pins are provided.

59. A method according to claim 51, wherein two screws are provided.

60. A method according to claim 51, wherein a gear system actuated by rotation of a screw drive cable is employed to rotate the screws, thereby causing said screws to advance and retract.

61. A method according to claim 51, wherein an inside portion of the receptacles are threaded.

62. A method according to claim 51, wherein an inside portion of the receptacles are not threaded and the screws are self-tapping screws.

63. A stapling device comprising:

a staple-firing portion;

an anvil portion;

one or more locking members provided in said staple-firing portion or said anvil portion; and

one or more receptacles provided in the other of said staple firing portion or said anvil portion.

64. A stapling device according to claim 63, wherein extending one or more of said locking members from their original location, engaging them into said one or more receptacles, and locking them in said one or more receptacles locks together said staple-firing portion and said anvil portion.

65. A stapling device according to claim 63, wherein the locking members can be extended and retracted from the portion of the stapling device in which they are stored.

66. A stapling device according to claim 63, wherein the locking members can be locked in and released from the receptacles that are provided in the portion of the stapling device.

67. A stapling device according to claim 63, wherein an entrance to the receptacle is beveled, thereby guiding the locking member into said receptacle.

68. A stapling device according to claim 63, wherein the locking members are stored in the anvil portion.

69. A stapling device according to claim 63, wherein the locking members are stored in the staple-firing portion.

70. A stapling device according to claim 63, wherein the operation of the staple firing portion is enabled by locking the locking members in the receptacles.

71. A stapling device according to claim 63, wherein the locking members are manufactured such that they can be broken by pulling the staple-firing portion and the anvil portion of the stapling device apart.

72. A stapling device according to claim 63, wherein the locking members comprise one or more locking pins.

73. A stapling device according to claim 63, wherein the locking members comprise one or more screws.

74. A stapling device according to claim 72, wherein a dual rack and single pinion system is employed to advance and retract the locking pins.

75. A stapling device according to claim 72, wherein an actuator mechanism is employed to advance and retract the locking pins.

76. A stapling device according to claim 72, wherein at least one of the receptacles is provided with latches and springs, for biasing said latches in the desirable direction for latching onto the locking pins.

77. A stapling device according to claim 76, wherein the latches comprise pawls.

78. A stapling device according to claim 76, wherein the springs comprise leaf springs.

79. A stapling device according to claim 77, wherein the pawls are released from the locking pins by components of the cam assembly of the staple-firing portion of the stapling device

80. A stapling device according to claim 72, wherein two locking pins are provided.

81. A stapling device according to claim 73, wherein two screws are provided.

82. A stapling device according to claim 73, wherein a gear system actuated by rotation of a screw drive cable is employed to rotate the screws, thereby causing said screws to advance and retract.

83. A stapling device according to claim 73, wherein an inside portoin of the receptacles are threaded.

84. A stapling device according to claim 73, wherein an inside portion of the receptacles are not threaded and the screws are self-tapping screws.
