Abstract

The physical layer session resource broker (PHY SRB) according to the invention receives request from application servers (VOD SERVER, TV BRDCST SERVER, GAME SERVER, WEB SERVER) which are translated into physical layer parameter values. The physical layer parameter values are imposed on the access nodes (DSLAM) by the physical layer session resource broker (PHY SRB).

Claims

1. Session resource broker (PHY SRB) for customizing resources per application session in an access network, said session resource broker (PHY SRB) comprising:

a. an application interface (APP-I) for reception of application requests from at least one application server (VOD SERVER, TV BRDCST SERVER, GAME SERVER, WEB SERVER) coupled to said application interface (APP-I),

CHARACTERIZED IN THAT said session resource broker (PHY SRB) further comprises;

b. a translator for translating a quality parameter value in said application requests into a physical layer parameter value; and

c. an access node interface (AN-I) for transfer of said physical layer parameter value to at least one access node (DSLAM) for adoption thereby.

2. Session resource broker (PHY SRB) according to claim 1,

CHARACTERIZED IN THAT said physical layer parameter value is indicative for a level below which showtime will be interrupted.

3. Session resource broker (PHY SRB) according to claim 2,

CHARACTERIZED IN THAT said session resource broker (PHY SRB) further comprises notification means for notifying a user on expected loss of showtime.

4. Session resource broker (PHY SRB) according to claim 2,

CHARACTERIZED IN THAT said application server is a video broadcast server (TV BRDCST SERVER), and said quality parameter value is indicative for a required stability.

5. Session resource broker (PHY SRB) according to claim 1,

CHARACTERIZED IN THAT said physical layer parameter value is indicative for a minimal bit error rate.

6. Session resource broker (PHY SRB) according to claim 5,

CHARACTERIZED IN THAT said application server is a video on demand server (VOD SERVER), and said quality parameter value is indicative for an expected image quality.

7. Session resource broker (PHY SRB) according to claim 1,

CHARACTERIZED IN THAT said physical layer parameter value is indicative for the selection of fast mode instead of interleaved mode.

8. Session resource broker (PHY SRB) according to claim 7,

CHARACTERIZED IN THAT said application server is a game server (GAME SERVER), and said quality parameter value is indicative for an expected play reaction time.

9. Session resource broker (PHY SRB) according to claim 1,

CHARACTERIZED IN THAT said physical layer parameter value is indicative for the capacity share between upstream and downstream direction.

10. Session resource broker (PHY SRB) according to claim 1,

CHARACTERIZED IN THAT said session resource broker (PHY SRB) further comprises a broker interface (SRB-I) for connection to a second session resource broker (SRB) able to customize resources at protocol stack layers higher than the physical layer on the basis of bandwidth requests received from said at least one application server (VOD SERVER, TV BRDCST SERVER, GAME SERVER, WEB SERVER).
