Abstract

A media data security system for rendering a secure media data file, having associated authentication data, for output comprises a data preparation unit operable with respect to a version of the media data file, having user controls for generating a list of desired render operations to be applied to the media data file; and a secure data reproducer arranged to receive the list of desired render operations from the data preparation unit and to render the secure media data file for output on the basis of the list of render operations, the secure data reproducer comprising: a data authenticator for detecting the authenticity of the secure media data file using the authentication data; and a data reproducer operable, if the data authenticator detects that the input data is authentic, to perform the list of desired render operations with respect to the secure media data file.

Claims

1. A media data security system for rendering a secure media data file, having associated authentication data, for output, said system comprising:

a data preparation unit operable with respect to a version of said media data file, having user controls for generating a list of desired render operations to be applied to said media data file; and

a secure data reproducer arranged to receive said list of desired render operations from said data preparation unit and to render said secure media data file for output on the basis of said list of render operations, said secure data reproducer comprising;

a data authenticator for detecting the authenticity of said secure media data file using said authentication data; and

a data reproducer operable, if said data authenticator detects that said input data is authentic, to perform said list of desired render operations with respect to said secure media data file.

2. A system according to claim 1, in which said authentication data represents digital signature data derived in respect of at least a portion of said media data file.

3. A system according to claim 1, in which said authentication data represents hash data derived in respect of at least a portion of said media data file.

4. A system according to claim 1, in which said authentication data comprises watermark data encoded within at least a portion of said media data file.

5. A system according to claim 1, in which:

said secure media data file is encrypted; and

said data reproducer is arranged to decrypt said encrypted secure media data file.

6. A system according to claim 5, in which the version of said media data file used by said data preparation unit is unencrypted.

7. A system according to claim 1, in which said media data file represents video and/or audio data.

8. A system according to claim 7, in which:

said media data file represents at least video data; and

said render operations comprise one or more operations selected from the group consisting of;

selecting temporal portions for display;

image cropping;

image zooming;

image enhancement;

noise reduction;

replay speed variations; and

display of multiple images on a single display screen.

9. A system according to claim 1, in which said secure media data file is stored on a removable storage medium.

10. A system according to claim 9, in which at least a component of said authentication data is stored on the same storage medium as said secure media data file.

11. A system according to claim 10, in which said authentication data requires an additional data component, not stored on said removable storage medium.

12. A security arrangement comprising:

a video data server, connectable to one or more video cameras, for handling video data from said video cameras and for preparing a secure media data file and associated authentication data; and

a system according to claim 1 for rendering said secure media data file.

13. An arrangement according to claim 12, comprising one or more video cameras connected to said video data server.

14. A media data security method for rendering a secure media data file, having associated authentication data, for output, said method comprising the steps of:

a data preparation unit generating, with respect to a version of said media data file, a list of desired render operations to be applied to said media data file; and

a secure data reproducer receiving said list of desired render operations from said data preparation unit and rendering said secure media data file for output on the basis of the list of render operations, said secure data reproducer;

detecting said authenticity of said secure media data file using said authentication data; and

if said data authenticator detects that said input data is authentic, performing the list of desired render operations with respect to said secure media data file.

15. A medium by which computer software having program code for carrying out a method according to claim 14. is provided.

16. A medium according to claim 15, said computer software comprising a video editing application program and a software plug-in arranged to co-operate with said application program.

17. A medium according to claim 15, said computer software comprising a software plug-in arranged to co-operate with a video editing application program.

18. A medium according to claim 16, said medium being a transmission medium.

19. A medium according to claim 16, said medium being a storage medium.

20. A medium according to claim 17, said medium being a transmission medium.

21. A medium according to claim 17, said medium being a storage medium.
