Abstract

An embodiment of the present invention provides an antenna system, comprising a plurality of non-uniformly spaced antenna elements arranged substantially linearly, a power divider for dividing transmit power thereby coupling signals to the plurality of antenna elements, a phase shifter capable of phase shifting the signals between the power divider and the plurality of antenna elements such that radiated signals from each antenna element add coherently such that the radiated electromagnetic energy may be focused at a focal point in the near field region or in the Fresnel region of the antenna system. An embodiment of the present invention may also provide at least one additional receive antenna element capable of receiving signals backscattered from at least one RFID tag located in the near field of the focused array and the divider may create substantially equal power levels feeding each antenna element. The antenna elements may be similar or identical and each element may be oriented such that the individual element main beam may point in a unique direction.

Claims

1. An antenna system, comprising:

a plurality of non-uniformly spaced antenna elements arranged substantially linearly;

a power divider for dividing transmit power thereby coupling signals to said plurality of antenna elements;

a beamforming network capable of phase shifting the signals between the power divider and the plurality of antenna elements such that radiated signals from each antenna element add coherently such that the radiated electromagnetic energy is focused at a focal point in the near field region or in the Fresnel region of said antenna system.

2. The antenna system of claim 1, further comprising at least one additional receive antenna element capable of receiving signals backscattered from at least one RFID tag located in the near field of said focused array.

3. The antenna system of claim 1, wherein said divider creates substantially equal power levels feeding each antenna element.

4. The antenna system of claim 1, wherein said antenna elements are similar and each element may be oriented such that the individual element main beam points in a unique direction.

5. The antenna system of claim 1, wherein said at least one RFID Tag is capable of being interrogated.

8. The antenna system of claim 1, wherein element positions and element pointing directions are designed to maximize the near-field to far field ratio of antenna gain.

9. The antenna system of claim 1, whose element positions and element pointing directions are designed to minimize the peak far-field gain.

10. The antenna system of claim 1, wherein said antenna is adapted to minimize radiated emissions and peak far-field gain levels.

11. The antenna system of claim 1, where said power divider includes RF amplification to boost the radiated power if the measured far-field gain of the non-amplified antenna system falls below a predetermined limit.

12. The antenna system of claim 11, wherein said RF amplification is placed ahead of said power divider.

13. The antenna system of claim 11, wherein said RF amplification is distributed in a phase shifting network following said power divider.

14. The antenna system of claim 1, wherein for said at least one RFID tag to be read it must lie in the near field or the Fresnel region of the focusing aperture.

15. The antenna system of claim 1, wherein the largest physical dimension of an aperture size is chosen to be sufficiently large such that the volume where said at least one RFID tag that is to be interrogated always lies in the near-field region or the Fresnel region of said antenna system.

16. The antenna system of claim 1, wherein said antenna system is capable of producing M fixed beams by providing that each of N radiating elements is fed by an M-way power combiner and M separate beamforming networks connect M RF input ports to each of the N M-way power combiners.

17. A method of focusing radiated electromagnetic energy at a focal point in the near field or in the Fresnel region of an antenna system, comprising:

arranging a plurality of non-uniformly spaced antenna elements substantially linearly;

dividing transmit power with a power divider thereby coupling signals to said plurality of antenna elements; and

shifting the signals between the power divider and the plurality of antenna elements such that radiated signals from each antenna element add coherently at the focal point.

18. The method of claim 17, further comprising receiving signals backscattered from at least one RFID tag located in the near field of said focused array by at least one additional receive antenna element.

19. The method of claim 17, further comprising creating substantially equal power levels feeding each antenna element by said power divider.

20. An antenna system, comprising:

a plurality of antenna elements arranged in essentially a linear fashion,

a divider capable of dividing transmitted power such that signals are coupled to said plurality of antenna elements with non-uniform power levels;

a phase shifter capable of phase shifting said signals between said divider and the plurality of antenna elements such that radiated signals from each antenna element add coherently at the focal point, thereby focusing radiated electromagnetic energy at a focal point in the near field or in the Fresnel region of said antenna system.

21. The antenna system of claim 20, further comprising at least one additional receive antenna element capable of receiving signals backscattered from at least one RFID tag located in the near field of the focused array.

22. The antenna system of claim 20, wherein said antenna elements are similar and each element may be oriented such that the individual element main beam points in a unique direction.

23. The antenna system of claim 21, wherein said antenna system is capable of interrogating said at least one RFID tag.

24. The antenna system of claim 20, wherein said antenna element positions and element pointing directions are designed to maximize the near-field to far field ratio of antenna gain.

25. The antenna system of claim 20, wherein said antenna element positions and element pointing directions are designed to minimize the peak far-field gain.

26. The antenna system of claim 20 wherein said power divider includes RF amplification to boost the radiated power to predetermined levels if the measured far-field gain of the non-amplified antenna system falls below a predetermined limit.

27. The antenna system of claim 26, wherein said RF amplification is placed ahead of said power divider.

28. The antenna system of claim 26, wherein said RF amplification is distributed in a phase shifting network following the power divider.

29. The antenna system of claim 20, wherein said at least one RFID tag to be read must lie in the near field or the Fresnel region of the focusing aperture.

30. The antenna system of claim 20, wherein the largest physical dimension of an aperture size is chosen to be sufficiently large such that the volume where said at least one RFID tag that is to be interrogated always lies in the near-field or the Fresnel region of said antenna system.

31. The antenna system of claim 20, wherein said antenna system is capable of producing M fixed beams by providing that each of N radiating elements is fed by an M-way power combiner and M separate phase shifters connect M RF input ports to each of the N M-way power combiners.

32. A method of focusing radiated electromagnetic energy at a focal point in the near field region or in the Fresnel region of an antenna system, comprising:

arranging a plurality of non-uniformly spaced antenna elements substantially linearly;

dividing transmit power with a power divider such that signals are coupled to said plurality of antenna elements with non-uniform power levels;

phase shifting the signals between the power divider and the plurality of antenna elements such that radiated signals from each antenna element add coherently at the focal point.

33. The method of claim 32, further comprising receiving signals backscattered from at least one RFID tag located in the near field of the focused array.

34. The method of claim 32, further comprising orienting each individual element main beam so that it points in a unique direction.

35. The method of claim 32, further comprising interrogating said at least one RFID tag.

36. The method of claim 32, further comprising maximizing the near-field to far field ratio of antenna gain by adjusting said antenna element positions and element pointing directions.

37. The method of claim 32, further comprising minimizing the peak far-field gain by adjusting said antenna element positions and element pointing directions.

38. The method of claim 32, further comprising boosting the radiated power to predetermined levels if the measured far-field gain of the non-amplified antenna system falls below a predetermined limit by including in said power divider an RF amplification.

39. The method of claim 38, further comprising placing said RF amplification ahead of said power divider.

40. The method of claim 38, further comprising distributing said RF amplification in a phase shifting network following the power divider.

41. The method of claim 32, further comprising requiring that in order for said at least one RFID tag to be read, it must lie in the near field or the Fresnel region of the focusing aperture.

42. The method of claim 32, further comprising choosing the largest physical dimension of an aperture size to be sufficiently large such that the volume where said at least one RFID tag that is to be interrogated always lies in the near-field or the Fresnel region of said antenna system.

43. The method of claim 32, further comprising producing M fixed beams by providing that each of N radiating elements is fed by an M-way power combiner and M separate beamforming networks connect M RF input ports to each of the N M-way power combiners.
