Abstract

The invention relates to the extraction and/or presentation of glucose concentrations estimated as a function of time into a format that facilitates conveyance of the underlying information. More particularly, short term actions, such as exercise, diabetes drug treatment, and/or food intake, are correlated to glucose response profiles. Optionally, glucose concentration responses are back correlated to parameters, such as time, exercise, diabetes drug treatment and/or food intake. The resulting correlated data are output to the user in a time compressed format, in video format, and/or as a cluster allowing diagnosis and treatment information to be more readily determined and used. These information presentations are useful for both the medical professional and the end user. The information presentation is preferably used with a noninvasive, implantable, semi-continuous, and/or continuous analyte analyzer, such as a glucose concentration analyzer.

Claims

1. An apparatus for displaying effectiveness of therapy, comprising:

a near-infrared noninvasive analyte property analyzer;

means for interactive selection of a first property, wherein said means are integrated into said analyzer, and wherein said first property comprises any of;

a time period;

an activity;

an exercise period;

an exercise routine;

a drug intake time;

a drug dosage;

an upper concentration limit of said analyte property;

a lower concentration limit of said analyte property; and

a limit of food element intake;

means for selection of a second property associated with said first property; and

display means for said second property.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said analyzer comprises:

a sample module in a first housing;

a base module in a second housing; and

means for communication between said sample module and said base module.

3. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein said sample module comprises a source emitting light over the range of at least 1200 to 1800 nm.

4. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said means for interactive selection comprises any of:

menu options;

keyboard input;

button selection;

a stylus;

a touch screen; and

voice command.

5. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said time period comprises a period of any of about:

multiple hours;

less than five hours;

a day;

a week;

a month; and

several months.

6. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said food element comprises any of:

total calories;

total mass of food;

sugar;

carbohydrate;

protein; and

fat.

7. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said limit comprises either of an upper limit and a lower limit.

8. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said second property comprises any of:

a concentration of said analyte property associated with said first property;

a time period associated with said first property;

an exercise period associated with said first property;

an exercise routine associated with said first property;

a drug intake time associated with said first property;

a drug dosage associated with said first property;

an upper concentration limit of said analyte property associated with said first property;

a lower concentration limit of said analyte property associated with said first property; and

a limit of food element intake associated with said first property.

9. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said display means for said second property comprises any of:

a slider graph;

a bar graph;

a treadmill graph; and

a tachometer graph.

10. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein said display means comprises a first animated graphical representation of said second property.

11. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein said second property comprises historical glucose concentration estimated by said analyzer.

12. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein said display means further comprises a second graphical representation of any of:

a maximum achieved glucose concentration;

a minimum achieved glucose concentration;

a targeted glucose concentration;

a targeted maximum glucose concentration; and

a targeted minimum glucose concentration.

13. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein said display means further comprises a third graphical representation of any of:

said maximum achieved glucose concentration;

said minimum achieved glucose concentration;

said targeted glucose concentration;

said targeted maximum glucose concentration; and

said targeted minimum glucose concentration.

14. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said display means presents said historical analyte concentrations in a time compressed format.

15. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said analyte comprises any of:

water;

protein;

fat;

cholesterol;

urea;

glucose; and

alcohol.

16. An apparatus for estimating effectiveness of diabetes therapy related to an action, comprising:

memory means containing levels of diabetes control;

means for noninvasive estimation of a series of glucose concentrations subsequent to said action; and

means for classification of said action into at least one of said levels of diabetes control based upon said series of glucose concentrations.

17. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein said means for noninvasive estimation comprises:

a sample module in a first housing;

a base module in a second housing, wherein said memory means and said means for classification reside in said base module; and

means for communication between said sample module and said base module.

18. The apparatus of claim 17, wherein said means for communicating comprises a communication bundle with a first end connected to said sample module and a second end connected to said base module.

19. The apparatus of claim 17, wherein said sample module comprises a light source emitting radiation over the range of 1100 to 1900 nm.

20. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein said action comprises any of:

a caloric intake;

a period of exercise; and

an intake of a diabetes treatment drug.

21. The apparatus of claim 20, wherein said caloric intake comprises a meal.

22. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein said levels of diabetes control comprise levels based upon glucose concentration response profiles.

23. The apparatus of claim 17, further comprising a display module integrated into said base module.

24. The apparatus of claim 23, wherein said display module displays said classification.

25. The apparatus of claim 23, wherein said display module displays a glucose treatment grid.

26. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein said action comprises a short term event.

27. The apparatus of claim 26, wherein said short term event comprises a period of less than about four hours.

28. A method of estimating risk of developing diabetes complications as a result of an action, comprising:

providing diabetes complication classifications based upon glucose concentration response profiles;

estimating a series of glucose concentrations from noninvasive spectra subsequent to said action; and

classifying risk of said action based upon said series of glucose concentrations.
