Abstract

A printer is arranged to engage a printer cartridge that is loaded with ink and print media. Information about the ink and print media is stored in an actuating formation formed on an external casing of the printer. The actuating formation typically comprises a two dimensional array of protrusions. The printer includes an array of capacitive sensors that is located so that upon the printer engaging the cartridge the actuating formation is brought to bear upon the capacitive sensors. By monitoring variations in capacitance of the sensors a processor internal to the printer is able to recover the information stored in the actuating formation and subsequently adjust printer operation accordingly.

Claims

1. A printer arranged to engage a printer cartridge, the printer including a processor responsive to an array of capacitive sensors disposed to sense an actuating formation of the printer cartridge upon engagement,

whereby the processor adjusts operation of the printer on the basis of information encoded in the actuating formation.

2. A printer according to claim 1, wherein the array is in the form of a ceramic metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) device.

3. A printer according to claim 2, wherein the array includes a wafer substrate.

4. A printer according to claim 3, wherein the capacitive sensors are disposed upon the wafer substrate.

5. A printer according to claim 4, wherein each of the capacitive sensors is embedded in a layer of dielectric material positioned on the wafer substrate.

6. A printer according to claim 5, wherein each of the capacitive sensors includes a capacitor plate arranged to contact a corresponding protrusion of the actuating formation upon engagement.

7. A printer according to claim 1, wherein the capacitive sensors are disposed as a two dimensional array.

8. A printer according to claim 1 including an interface circuit arranged to interface between the array of capacitive sensors and the processor.

9. A printer according to claim 8, wherein the processor is programmed to adjust the operation of the printer in response to instructions encoded in the actuating formation representing characteristics of print media loaded in the printer cartridge.

10. A printer according to claim 9, wherein the processor interrogates a look-up table in response to instructions encoded in the actuating formation.

11. A printer according to claim 10, wherein the look-up table stores possible values relating to media and ink corresponding to those found in the range of inks and media that might be loaded in the cartridge.
