Abstract

A mobile station is disclosed for processing differing radio standards such as GSM/GPRS/EDGE and TD-SCDMA. The mobile station includes a channel decoding unit and a coding unit. The signals of both radio standards are processed both with the coding unit and with the channel decoding unit. The coding unit and the channel decoding unit are arranged in the baseband chip of the mobile station. The TD-SCDMA-specific algorithms can be generated by means of a coprocessor that is electrically connected to the baseband chip or integrated in the baseband chip.

Claims

1. A mobile station configured to process signals of at least two different radio standards, comprising mobile station components, each of which are configured to process signals of the different radio standards, wherein one radio standard comprises a 3G radio standard, and a second radio standard comprises a 2G or a 2.5G radio standard.

2. The mobile station according to claim 1, wherein the mobile station further comprises algorithms adapted to control protocols used to process the signals for both radio standards.

3. The mobile station according to claim 2, wherein the algorithms are adapted to control the 2G radio standard protocols or the 2.5G radio standard protocols, and adapted to control TSM protocols of a TD-SCDMA 3G radio standard.

4. The mobile station according to claim 1, wherein the mobile station components comprise a channel decoding unit.

5. The mobile station according to claim 1, wherein the mobile station components comprise a coding unit.

6. The mobile station according to claim 1, wherein the mobile station components comprise a system clock pulse generator unit and a rate matcher.

7. The mobile station according to claim 1, wherein at least some of the mobile station components are arranged on a baseband chip within the mobile station.

8. The mobile station according to claim 7, wherein radio standard-specific algorithms of both radio standards are generated in the baseband chip.

9. The mobile station according to claim 7, further comprising a coprocessor electrically connected to the baseband chip.

10. The mobile station according to claim 9, wherein the coprocessor is configured to implement radio standard-specific algorithms of one of the two radio standards.

11. A method for signal processing in a mobile station comprising mobile station components that support at least two different radio standards, wherein one radio standard comprises a 3G radio standard, and a second radio standard comprises a 2G or a 2.5G radio standard, comprising processing signals of both radio standards in some or all of the components.

12. The method according to claim 11, wherein processing signals comprises employing algorithms adapted to control protocols that are used to process signal in both radio standards.

13. The method according to claim 12, wherein the algorithms are adapted to control the 2G or 2.5G radio standard protocols, and adapted to control TSM protocols of a TD-SCDMA 3G radio standard.

14. The method according to claim 11, wherein the mobile station components comprise a channel decoding unit and a coding unit in which signals are decoded and coded, respectively, in accordance with both radio standards.

15. The method according to claim 14, wherein the decoding and the coding of signals in accordance with both radio standards are executed in a baseband chip within the mobile station.

16. The method according to claim 15, wherein radio standard-specific algorithms of both radio standards are generated in the baseband chip.

17. The method according to claim 15, further comprising electrically connecting a coprocessor to the baseband chip, and generating radio standard-specific algorithms of one of the two radio standards with the coprocessor.

18. The method according to claim 17, wherein coprocessor generated algorithms comprise protocols of a UTRA-TDD low chip rate standard of a TD-SCDMA 3G radio standard.

19. The method according to claim 11, wherein the mobile station components comprise a system clock pulse generator unit and a rate matcher in which signals of both radio standards are processed.

20. A mobile radio station, comprising:

a baseband circuit, comprising;

an application processor;

a first protocol control subsystem operably coupled to the application processor, and configured to control protocol algorithms associated with the first radio standard; and

a modem subsystem operably coupled to the first protocol control subsystem, and configured to code and decode signals in accordance with both the first radio standard and a second, different radio standard; and

a coprocessor operably coupled to the baseband circuit, and configured to control protocol algorithms associated with the second radio standard.
