Abstract

The present invention is a device and system for manipulating a surgical tool at an intended location, e.g., a confined or inaccessible space, which includes a surgical anchor having at least one opening, wherein the opening provides a catch for a pin; and at least one anchor point to position and orient a surgical tool inside a human body. The apparatus and system of the present invention allows for the use of multiple intra-abdominal surgical tools inserted through a single incision.

Claims

1. A device for manipulating a surgical tool at an intended manipulation location in a confined or inaccessible space, comprising:

a surgical anchor comprising;

at least one opening, wherein the opening provides a catch for a pin; and

at least one anchor point for the surgical tool.

2. The device of claim 1, wherein the pin comprises a needle.

3. The device of claim 1, wherein the pin provides electrical power to the surgical anchor.

4. The device of claim 1, wherein the pin comprises a needle that provides pneumatic power to the surgical tool attached to the surgical anchor.

5. The device of claim 1, wherein the opening comprises a catch that is threaded.

6. The device of claim 1, wherein the opening comprises a catch that is self-locking.

7. The device of claim 1, further comprising a surgical tool attached to the surgical anchor connected by a universal joint.

8. The device of claim 1, further comprising a surgical tool attached to the surgical anchor wherein the surgical tool is a camera, a retractor, a paddle, a hose, a cutting tool, a light, a hook, a net or a anchor.

9. The device of claim 1, wherein the surgical tool comprises a drawstring for removing the surgical tool.

10. The device of claim 1, wherein the surgical anchor and the surgical tool are of unitary construction.

11. The device of claim 1, wherein the surgical anchor comprises a surgical plastic.

12. A surgical anchor comprising:

a surgical anchor comprising;

at least one opening, wherein the opening provides a catch for a pin;

at least one anchor point for a surgical tool; and

a ferrous material disposed in or about the surgical anchor.

13. The anchor of claim 12, wherein the pin provides electrical power to the surgical anchor.

14. The anchor of claim 12, wherein the pin provides pneumatic power to a surgical tool attached to the surgical anchor.

15. The anchor of claim 12, wherein the opening comprises a catch that is threaded.

16. The anchor of claim 12, wherein the opening comprises a catch that is self-locking.

17. The anchor of claim 12, further comprising a surgical tool attached to the surgical anchor wherein the surgical tool is a camera, a retractor, a paddle, a hose, a cutting tool, a light, a hook, a net.

18. The anchor of claim 12, further comprising a magnet positioned externally from the surgical anchor that is within a body cavity, wherein manipulation of the magnet directs movement of the anchor within the body cavity.

19. The anchor of claim 18, wherein the magnet is a permanent magnet.

20. A remotely operated surgical device comprising:

a generally tubular anchor comprising;

at least one opening, wherein the opening provides a catch for a pin;

at least one anchor point for a surgical device; and

a surgical device anchored to the anchor point of the anchor, wherein the surgical tool can operate independently of a hand-held laparoscopic tool within a confined space at distances greater than 20 centimeters.

21. A general purpose surgical platform comprising:

a magnetically anchored surgical device comprising a linear ferrous portion that extends along at least one length of the surgical device and an intraabdominal tool anchor point, wherein the platform allows for hands-free operation within a limited surgical envelope.

22. The platform of claim 21, wherein the magnetically anchored surgical device collapse to a cylindrical diameter of between about 12 and about 15 mm for insertion through a trocar.

23. The platform of claim 21, wherein the anchored surgical device further comprises an opening with a catch for semi-permanent anchoring of the device.

24. The platform of claim 21, further comprising a intraabdominal tool attached to the surgical anchor point wherein the intraabdominal tool is a camera, a retractor, a paddle, a hose, a cutting tool, a light, a hook, a net.

25. The platform of claim 24, further comprising a pin that attaches to the catch of the opening for semi-permanent anchoring of the device.

26. The platform of claim 25, wherein the pin comprises an electrical contact to provide electrical communication to the surgical anchor.

27. The platform of claim 25, wherein the pin is connected to a source for pneumatic power to the tool attached to the surgical anchor.

28. The platform of claim 23, wherein the opening comprises a catch that is threaded.

29. The platform of claim 23, wherein the opening comprises a catch that is self-locking.

30. The platform of claim 21, further comprising a magnet positioned externally from the surgical anchor that is within a body cavity, wherein manipulation of the magnet directs movement of the anchor within the body cavity.

31. The platform of claim 21, wherein the anchor comprises surgical grade plastic, aluminum, titanium, stainless steel, nylon or polyester.

32. The platform of claim 21, wherein the anchor comprises a suction cup.

33. A device for manipulating a surgical tool at an intended manipulation location in a confined or inaccessible space, comprising:

a surgical anchor comprising at least one catch for a pin and at least one anchor point for the surgical tool.
