Abstract

A branch vessel prosthesis is provided for use with an aorta stent graft defining a lumen and having a fenestration aligned with a branch vessel, including a generally helical coiled stent, preferably with a graft material affixed thereto to form a branch vessel lumen. At least one full turn at the proximal end of the helical coiled stent has a diameter larger than the diameter of the fenestration so as to retain the proximal end within the aorta stent. At least two full turns of the helical coil have a diameter smaller than the at least one full coil so as to pass through the fenestration upon deployment.

Claims

1. A branch vessel stent graft for use with an aorta stent graft defining a lumen and having a fenestration aligned with a branch vessel, comprising a generally helical coiled stent with a graft material affixed thereto to form a branch vessel lumen, wherein at least one full turn of the helical coiled stent at a proximal end has a diameter larger than the diameter of the fenestration so as to retain the proximal end within the aorta stent, and wherein at least two full turns of the helical coil have a diameter smaller than the at least one full coil so as to pass through the fenestration upon deployment.

2. The branch vessel stent graft of claim 1 further comprising an attachment device whereby the position of the branch vessel stent graft is affixed within the branch vessel.

3. The branch vessel stent graft of claim 2 wherein the attachment device comprises barbs extending from the stent.

4. The branch vessel stent graft of claim 1 where the proximal end forms a seal with an inner surface of the aorta stent graft around the fenestration.

5. The branch vessel stent graft of claim 1, where the diameter of a turn of the coil immediately adjacent an outer surface of the fenestration is greater than the diameter of the fenestration to thereby capture the fenestration between the two adjacent coils upon deployment.

6. The branch vessel stent graft of claim 1 where the helical coiled stent comprises a metal wire.

7. The branch vessel stent graft of claim 6 wherein the metal wire is made from a shape memory alloy.

8. The branch vessel stent graft of claim 1 wherein the graft material is a polymer film.

9. The branch vessel stent graft of claim 8 wherein the polymer is selected from the group consisting of polyurethane and polytetrafluoroethylene.

10. The branch vessel stent graft of claim 8 wherein the graft material is affixed to the stent by dipping the stent in a liquefied polymer and allowing the polymer to solidify into a film.

11. The branch vessel stent graft of claim 1 wherein the graft material is attached to the stent by sutures.

12. The branch vessel stent graft of claim 11 wherein the graft material is a woven fabric.

13. A stent graft system for intraluminal deployment in an aorta and a branch vessel comprising:

an aorta stent graft for deployment within an the aorta and defining a lumen for the passage of blood therethrough, and having a fenestration aligned so as to allow blood to flow to a contiguous branch vessel; and

a branch vessel stent graft comprising a generally helical coiled stent with a graft material affixed thereto to form a branch vessel lumen, wherein at least one full turn of the helical coiled stent at a proximal end has a diameter larger than the diameter of the fenestration so as to retain the proximal end within the aorta stent, and wherein at least two full turns of the helical coil have a diameter smaller than the at least one full coil so as to pass through the fenestration upon deployment.

14. The system of claim 13 wherein the aorta stent graft comprises a reinforcement around the fenestration.

15. The system of claim 14 wherein the reinforcement cooperates with the at least one full turn of the helical coil at the proximal end of the branch vessel stent graft to form a seal between the aorta stent graft and the branch vessel stent graft.

16. The system of claim 14 wherein the reinforcement comprises a ring encapsulated with a graft material of the aorta stent graft.

17. A method of repairing a defect in an aorta and/or a branch vessel in a patient having an aorta stent graft defining a lumen and having a fenestration aligned with a branch vessel, comprising,

providing a branch vessel stent graft, comprising a generally helical coiled stent with a graft material affixed thereto to form a branch vessel lumen, wherein at least one full turn of the helical coiled stent at a proximal end has a diameter larger than the diameter of the fenestration, and wherein at least two full turns of the helical coil have a diameter smaller than the at least one full coil.

endoluminally deploying the branch vessel stent graft by passing the at least two full turns of the helical coil through the fenestration and retaining the proximal end with the at least one full turn within the aorta stent graft.

18. The method of claim 17 further comprising deploying a attachment device to fix the position of the branch vessel stent graft within the branch vessel.

19. The method of claim 18 wherein the attachment device comprises barbs extending from the stent.

20. The method of claim 17 wherein the diameter of a turn of the coil immediately adjacent an outer surface of the fenestration is greater than the diameter of the fenestration to thereby capture the fenestration between the two adjacent coils upon deployment.

21. A branch vessel prosthesis for use with an aorta stent graft defining a lumen and having a fenestration aligned with a branch vessel, comprising a generally helical coil stent forming a branch vessel lumen, wherein at least one full turn of the helical coil stent at a proximal end has a diameter larger than the diameter of the fenestration so as to retain the proximal end within the aorta stent, and wherein at least two full turns of the helical coil have a diameter smaller than the at least one full coil so as to pass through the fenestration upon deployment.

22. The branch vessel prosthesis of claim 21 further comprising graft material affixed to at least a portion of the helical coil stent.
