Abstract
The present invention provides particles that create permanent tissue markings, including, but not limited to, tattoos, that have variable appearance properties. Also, the present invention provides methods for producing, implanting, altering and removing these variable appearance tissue markings.

A method of changing and/or removing a variable appearance tissue marking with variable appearance properties that can be altered by application of a specific energy, wherein said marking is created by implanting into tissue a particle comprising a variable appearance material, the method comprising exposing said marking to the specific energy for a time sufficient to alter said variable appearance properties of the marking.
