Abstract

Delivery items ordered over the Internet by a particular time in the early evening may be delivered by the next morning to a location within a 5-6 hour delivery radius of a warehouse, according to one specific aspect of the present invention. The order for the delivery items is filled at the warehouse, where the items are placed in a tote for delivery. The filled tote is placed on a movable rack, which is transferred to a vehicle. At the delivery destination, the driver removes the tote and secures it via a system of one or more chains and/or cables which are contained in a delivery box which is secured outside the delivery destination. Later, the customer can unlock the chains from the tote in order to bring the tote inside and/or to remove the delivery items from the tote.

Claims

7. A tote for containing and transporting a delivery item to a delivery destination, said tote being securable at the delivery destination, comprising:

a cover,

a main structure for containing the delivery item; and

a pair of eyelets comprising;

a first eyelet on an exterior of the cover; and

a second eyelet on an exterior of the main structure substantially in proximity to the first eyelet;

wherein the delivery destination has first and second mounting means, as well as securing means comprising;

a first section comprising a first end securely connected to the first mounting means and a second end;

a second section comprising a first end connected to the second end of the first section by a first lock and a second end; and

a third section comprising a first end connected to the second end of the second section by a second lock, and a second end securely connected to the second mounting means;

wherein, after unlocking one of the first and second locks, the second section may either be (a) threaded through and around the eyelet pair to close the cover to the main structure of the tote and/or to secure the tote at the delivery destination, or (b) unthreaded from the eyelet pair to open the cover and/or release the tote.

8. A system of securing a delivery item at a delivery destination comprising:

a tote comprising

a cover,

a main structure for containing the delivery item; and

a pair of eyelets comprising;

a first eyelet on an exterior of the cover; and

a second eyelet on an exterior of the main structure substantially in proximity to the first eyelet;

mounting means at the delivery destination; and

securing means securely connected to said mounting means;

wherein a portion of the securing means is looped through the eyelet pair of the tote to securely tighten the cover to the main structure of the tote, whereby the tote holding the delivery item may be secured at the delivery destination and the delivery item may be secured within the tote.

1. A system of securing a delivery item at a delivery destination comprising:

a tote comprising

a cover,

a main structure for containing the delivery item; and

a pair of eyelets comprising;

a first eyelet on an exterior of the cover; and

a second eyelet on an exterior of the main structure substantially in proximity to the first eyelet;

a first mounting means at the delivery destination

a second mounting means at the delivery destination; and

securing means comprising;

a first section comprising a first end securely connected to the first mounting means and a second end;

a second section comprising a first end connected to the second end of the first section by a first lock and a second end; and

a third section comprising a first end connected to the second end of the second section by a second lock, and a second end securely connected to the second mounting means;

wherein, after unlocking one of the first and second locks, the second section may either be (a) threaded through and around the eyelet pair to close the cover to the main structure of the tote and/or to secure the tote at the delivery destination, or (b) unthreaded from the eyelet pair to open the cover and/or release the tote.

The system of claim 1, wherein the first lock may be opened by a person at the delivery destination and the second lock may be opened by a delivery person, whereby a delivery person can unlock the second lock in order to secure the tote at the delivery destination, then re-lock it, and the person can unlock the first lock in order to retrieve the tote and/or retrieve the delivery item in the tote.

3. The system of claim 1, wherein the tote comprises a substantially rigid material.

4. The system of claim 1, wherein the securing means comprises at least one of at least one chain and at least one cable.

5. The system of claim 1, wherein the tote further comprises:

a hinge connecting the cover to the main structure of the tote.

6. The system of claim 5, wherein the hinge is located on a side of the tote opposite to the side having the eyelet pair.

9. The system of claim 8, wherein the tote comprises a substantially rigid material.

10. The system of claim 9, wherein said substantially rigid material comprises plastic.

11. The system of claim 8, wherein the tote comprises a sturdy, washable material suitable for holding dry goods refrigerated, and/or frozen products within the main structure.

12. The system of claim 8, wherein at least a portion of the tote comprises insulation.

13. The system of claim 8, wherein the main structure of the tote further comprises:

an interior partitioned into multiple sections.

14. The system of claim 8, wherein the securing means comprises one of a chain and cable.

15. The system of claim 8, further comprising:

a storage container mounted in proximity to the delivery destination, wherein the securing means is held inside the storage container when the securing means is not in use.

16. The system of claim 15, wherein the storage container comprises a box.

17. The system of claim 15, wherein the securing means is securely connected to said storage container.

18. The system of claim 1,

wherein the mounting means comprises

a first mounting means;

and

a second mounting means,

wherein the securing means comprises;

a first section comprising a first end securely connected to the first mounting means and a second end;

a second section comprising a first end connected to the second end of the first section by a first lock and a second end;

a third section comprising a first end connected to the second end of the second section by a second lock, and a second end securely connected to the second mounting means;

wherein, after unlocking one of the first and second locks, the second section may either be (a) looped through and around the eyelet pair to secure the tote and/or close the cover, or (b) unthreaded from the eyelet pair to open the cover and/or release the tote.

19. The system of claim 18, wherein the first lock may be opened by a person at the delivery destination and the second lock may be opened by a delivery person.

20. The system of claim 8, wherein the tote further comprises:

a hinge connecting the cover to the main structure of the tote.

21. The system of claim 20, wherein the hinge is located on a side of the tote opposite to the side having the eyelet pair.

22. The system of claim 8, wherein the item comprises a grocery item.

23. The system of claim 1, wherein said eyelet pair comprises a first eyelet pair, and said securing means comprises a first securing means, further comprising:

second securing means securely connected to the mounting means;

wherein the tote further comprises;

a second pair of eyelets comprising a third eyelet on the exterior of the cover and a fourth eyelet on the exterior of the main structure substantially in proximity to the third eyelet; and

wherein a portion of the second securing means is looped through the second eyelet pair of the tote to securely tighten the cover to the main structure of the tote, whereby the tote holding the delivery item may be secured at the delivery destination and the delivery item may be secured within the tote.

24. The system of claim 1, further comprising:

a plurality of totes, including said tote, wherein each tote has an eyelet pair, and wherein more than one tote may be used to deliver at least one item to one delivery destination.

25. The system of claim 24, further comprising:

a movable rack for receiving the tote loaded with the delivery item, said movable rack being capable of holding a plurality of totes; and

a vehicle for receiving the movable rack, wherein the movable rack holding the tote may be secured within the vehicle, and wherein said vehicle delivers said tote at least partway to the delivery destination.

26. The system of claim 25, wherein said vehicle comprises:

a first vehicle which is dispatched to a transfer point from a warehouse from which the movable rack holding the tote came.

27. The system of claim 26, further comprising:

a second vehicle for receiving the tote from the first vehicle at the transfer point, wherein said second vehicle is dispatched from the transfer point to the delivery destination.

21-1. The system of claim 8, wherein the item may be maintained at a desired temperature within the tote by inserting a cool or warm insert in the tote in proximity to the item.
