Abstract

Disclosed are systems and methods for reducing power consumption in a receiver. In one embodiment, an RF receiver (or transceiver) is able to conserve power by reducing or eliminating the need to continuously search for incoming signals. In one embodiment, this is accomplished by a receiver operating in a first mode and a second mode, wherein the receiver does not have to continuous search for and/or receive a signal while in the first mode, but rather may switch to the second mode upon detecting a DC voltage change across one or more impedance elements, thereby indicating an incoming signal.

Claims

1. A receiving circuit comprising:

an antenna to receive a radio frequency signal;

a switch circuit couple to the antenna;

a receiver coupled to said switch circuit, said switch circuit to direct the radio frequency signal to said receiver when said receiving circuit is in a first mode; and

,

a detection circuit coupled to said switch circuit, said switch circuit to direct said radio frequency signal to said detection circuit when said receiving circuit is in a second mode, said second mode being characterized as a lower power consumption mode, and wherein said detection circuit causes said receiving circuit to enter the first mode when said radio frequency signal is a valid signal.

2. The receiving circuit of claim 1, wherein said radio frequency signal has a frequency of at least 20 GHz.

3. The receiving circuit of claim 1, further comprising a rectifying circuit coupled between said switch circuit and said detection circuit.

4. The receiving circuit of claim 3, further comprising a low pass filter coupled between said rectifying circuit and said detector circuit.

5. The receiving circuit of claim 1, when said second mode is characterized by said receiver being in an off position, and said switch circuit directing said radio frequency signal to said detection circuit.

6. The receiving circuit of claim 5, when said first mode is characterized by said receiver being in an on position, and said switch circuit directing said radio frequency signal to said receiver.

7. The receiving circuit of claim 1, wherein when said receiving circuit is in the second mode, said detection circuit provides a control signal to said switch circuit upon detecting the valid signal.

8. The receiving circuit of claim 7, wherein said control signal causes the switch circuit to direct the radio frequency signal to said receiver, and wherein said detection circuit further provides an on/off signal to said receiver to put the receiver in an on position.

9. The receiving circuit of claim 1, wherein said switch circuit comprises:

a first transmission line having a first impedance;

a first two-state device couple to the first transmission line;

a second transmission line having a second impedance; and

a second two-state device couple to the second transmission line, wherein when said receiving circuit is in the first mode, said first impedance is set to cause the first transmission line to operate as an open circuit, and when said receiving circuit is in the second mode, said second impedance is set to cause the second transmission line to operate as an open circuit.

10. The receiving circuit of claim 9, wherein said detection circuit provides a first control signal to said first two-state device to modify said first impedance, and wherein said detection circuit further provides a second control signal to said second two-state device to modify said second impedance.

11. The receiving circuit of claim 1, wherein said detection circuit comprise a comparator circuit, a switch controller, and a reference voltage source, said comparator circuit to compare a voltage of said radio frequency signal to a reference voltage from said reference voltage source.

12. The receiving circuit of claim 11, wherein said switch controller provides a control signal to said switch circuit when said voltage from the radio frequency signal is greater than said reference voltage.

27. The method of claim 1, further comprising rectifying said radio frequency signal before said radio frequency signal reaches said detector.

28. The method of claim 27, further comprising filtering said radio frequency signal after said rectifying and before said radio frequency signal reaches said detector.

31. The method of claim 1, wherein when said receiving circuit is in the second mode, the method further comprises providing a control signal by said detector to direct said radio frequency signal to said receiver when said radio frequency signal is a valid signal.

32. The method of claim 31, wherein said control signal causes the radio frequency signal to be directed to said receiver instead of said detector, and wherein said detector further provides an on/off signal to said receiver to put the receiver in an on position.

13. A system for receiving a radio frequency signal comprising:

a transmitter to transmit said radio frequency signal; and

,

a receiving circuit comprising;

an antenna to receive said radio frequency signal;

a switch circuit couple to the antenna;

a receiver coupled to said switch circuit, said switch circuit to direct the radio frequency signal to said receiver when said receiving circuit is in a first mode; and

,

a detection circuit coupled to said switch circuit, said switch circuit to direct said radio frequency signal to said detection circuit when said receiving circuit is in a second mode, said second mode being characterized as a lower power consumption mode, and wherein said detection circuit causes said receiving circuit to enter the first mode when said radio frequency signal is a valid signal.

14. The system of claim 13, wherein said radio frequency signal has a frequency of at least 20 GHz.

15. The system of claim 13, further comprising a rectifying circuit coupled between said switch circuit and said detection circuit.

16. The system of claim 15, further comprising a low pass filter coupled between said rectifying circuit and said detector circuit.

17. The system of claim 13, when said second mode is characterized by said receiver being in an off position, and said switch circuit directing said radio frequency signal to said detection circuit.

18. The system of claim 17, when said first mode is characterized by said receiver being in an on position, and said switch circuit directing said radio frequency signal to said receiver.

19. The system of claim 13, wherein when said receiving circuit is in the second mode, said detection circuit provides a control signal to said switch circuit upon detecting the valid signal.

20. The system of claim 19, wherein said control signal causes the switch circuit to direct the radio frequency signal to said receiver, and wherein said detection circuit further provides an on/off signal to said receiver to put the receiver in an on position.

21. The system of claim 13, wherein said switch circuit comprises:

a first transmission line having a first impedance;

a first two-state device couple to the first transmission line;

a second transmission line having a second impedance; and

a second two-state device couple to the second transmission line, wherein when said receiving circuit is in the first mode, said first impedance is set to cause the first transmission line to operate as an open circuit, and when said receiving circuit is in the second mode, said second impedance is set to cause the second transmission line to operate as an open circuit.

22. The system of claim 21, wherein said detection circuit provides a first control signal to said first two-state device to modify said first impedance, and wherein said detection circuit further provides a second control signal to said second two-state device to modify said second impedance.

23. The system of claim 13, wherein said detection circuit comprise a comparator circuit, a switch controller, and a reference voltage source, said comparator circuit to compare a voltage of said radio frequency signal to a reference voltage from said reference voltage source.

24. The system of claim 23, wherein said switch controller provides a control signal to said switch circuit when said voltage from the radio frequency signal is greater than said reference voltage.

25. A method of receiving a radio frequency signal comprising:

determining if a receiving circuit is in one of a first mode and a second mode;

directing said radio frequency signal to a receiver when said receiving circuit is in the first mode;

directing said radio frequency signal to a detector when said receiving circuit is in the second mode, said second mode being characterized as a lower power consumption mode, and wherein said detector causes said receiving circuit to enter the first mode when said radio frequency signal is a valid signal.

26. The method of claim 25, wherein said radio frequency signal has a frequency of at least 20 GHz.

29. The method of claim 25, wherein directing said radio frequency signal to the detector further comprises putting said receiver in an off position.

30. The method of claim 29, wherein directing said radio frequency signal to the receiver further comprises putting said receiver in an on position.

33. The method of claim 25, further comprising:

transmitting said radio frequency control signal over a first transmission line having a first impedance when said receiving circuit is in the first mode, said first impedance to be set to cause the first transmission line to operate as an open circuit;

transmitting said radio frequency control signal over a second transmission line having a second impedance when said receiving circuit is in the second mode, said second impedance to be set to cause the second transmission line to operate as the open circuit;

34. The method of claim 25, wherein said detector further:

compares a reference voltage to a voltage of said radio frequency signal; and

,

provides a control signal to said switch circuit when said voltage from the radio frequency signal is greater than said reference voltage.
