Abstract

A novel medical probe assembly, system, and methods for the use thereof to treat tissue are described. The system optionally comprises an energy source, two probe assemblies, and one or more cooling devices to provide cooling to at least one of the probe assemblies. The probe assemblies may be configured in a bipolar mode, whereby current flows preferentially between the probe assemblies. The probe assemblies and system described herein are particularly useful to deliver radio frequency energy to a patient'"'"'s body. RF energy delivery may be used for various applications, including the treatment of pain, tumor ablation and cardiac ablation.

Claims

1. A system for delivering energy to a patient'"'"'s body, comprising:

an energy source;

at least two probe assemblies;

an apparatus coupled to at least two of the probe assemblies, said apparatus operable to reduce a temperature of the probe assemblies to which it is coupled; and

a controller operable to control an operation of said apparatus with respect to each of said probe assemblies to which it is coupled, wherein the operation of said apparatus for one probe to which said apparatus is coupled is independent of the operation of said apparatus for any other probe to which said apparatus is coupled.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein said energy source comprises an electrical generator and wherein the generator is operable to provide energy in the form of alternating current.

3. The system of claim 2, wherein the alternating current has a frequency selected from the group consisting of the radio frequency range and the microwave range.

4. The system of claim 1, wherein said apparatus comprises at least one peristaltic pump for delivering a cooling fluid to said probe assemblies to which it is coupled.

5. The system of claim 1, wherein said at least two probe assemblies each comprises:

an elongate member having a distal region and a proximal region and defining a lumen therebetween;

an energy delivery device associated with said distal region of said elongate member, said energy delivery device comprising a protrusion; and

a temperature sensor associated with said protrusion.

6. The system of claim 5, wherein at least one of said probe assemblies further comprises at least one secondary temperature sensor.

7. The system of claim 1, further comprising at least one introducer tube radially dimensioned to accept at least one of said probe assemblies.

The system of claim 1, wherein at least one of said probe assemblies comprises a temperature sensor and wherein said controller is operable to receive a temperature measurement from said temperature sensor and to alter an operation of at least one of said energy source and said apparatus based on the temperature measurement received.

9. The system of claim 1, wherein each of said probe assemblies to which said apparatus is coupled comprises:

an elongate member having a distal region and a proximal region and defining a lumen therebetween; and

at least two tubular members disposed within said lumen for delivering a fluid to and removing a fluid from at least a portion of said elongate member.

10. The system of claim 1, wherein at least one of said probe assemblies comprises at least one marker selected from the group consisting of a radiopaque marker, a visible marker and a tactile marker.

11. The system of claim 1, wherein said system comprises at least three electrically conductive components and wherein said controller is operable to control a flow of energy between said electrically conductive components.

12. The system of claim 11, wherein said controller controls said flow of energy between said electrically conductive components by varying at least one electrical parameter associated with at least one of said electrically conductive components.

13. The system of claim 12, wherein said at least one electrical parameter is an electrical impedance between said at least one of said electrically conductive components and a current sink.

14. A method of treating tissue of a patient'"'"'s body, the method comprising:

providing an energy source, first and second probe assemblies each comprising an energy delivery device, an apparatus coupled to said first and second probe assemblies, and a controller operable to control an operation of

said apparatus with respect to each of said first and second probe assemblies;

inserting the energy delivery devices into spaced-apart treatment sites for said tissue;

delivering energy from said energy source to said tissue through said energy delivery devices; and

delivering a fluid from said apparatus to at least one of said first and second probe assemblies;

wherein said fluid is operable to reduce a temperature of said first and second probe assemblies and wherein the delivery of fluid from said apparatus to said first probe assembly is controlled by said controller independently of the delivery of fluid from said apparatus to said second probe assembly.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein said tissue is selected from the group consisting of an intervertebral disc and a vertebra or portions thereof.

16. The method of claim 14, wherein at least one of said first and second probe assemblies comprises a temperature sensor and wherein said method further comprises a step of measuring a temperature using said temperature sensor.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein the delivery of energy is controlled in response to a measured temperature.

18. A system for delivering energy to a patient'"'"'s body, comprising:

an energy source;

at least two probe assemblies;

a cooling means coupled to at least two of the probe assemblies, said cooling means operable to reduce a temperature of the probe assemblies to which it is coupled; and

a means for controlling an operation of said cooling means with respect to each of said probe assemblies to which it is coupled, wherein the operation of said cooling means for one probe to which said cooling means is coupled is independent of the operation of said cooling means for any other probe to which said cooling means is coupled.

19. The system of claim 18, wherein each of said probe assemblies to which said apparatus is coupled comprises:

an elongate member having a distal region and a proximal region and defining a lumen therebetween;

an energy delivery device associated with said distal region of said elongate member, said energy delivery device comprising a protrusion;

a temperature sensor associated with said protrusion; and

at least two tubular members disposed adjacent each other within said lumen for delivering a fluid to, and removing said fluid from, at least a portion of the probe assembly.

20. The system of claim 18, wherein said energy source comprises an electrical generator and wherein the generator is operable to provide energy selected from the group consisting of radio frequency energy, microwave energy and thermal energy.
