Abstract

A system for generating electrical power for an individual property (10) comprises a wind powered electricity generator (16) mounted on that property and arranged so that the electrical power generated be used in that property in preference to or to supplement electrical power provided by the national grid or other general electrical energy source.

Claims

1. A system for generating electrical power for an individual property comprising a wind powered electricity generator mounted on a roof of that property and arranged so that the electrical power generated be used in that property in preference to or to supplement electrical power provided by the national grid or other general electrical energy source, wherein the wind powered electricity generator comprises a rotor arranged to rotate to face the wind.

2. A system as claimed in claim 1, wherein an individual property has at least one turbine mounted in a suitable position on the property exposed to the prevailing wind.

3. A system as claimed in claim 2, wherein the turbine comprises a wind vane.

4. A system as claimed in claim 3, wherein the wind vane comprises at least one multi-bladed rotor that drives an electricity generator.

5. A system as claimed in claim 3 or 4, wherein the wind vane has a tail fin.

6. A system as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 5, wherein the electricity generator is directly coupled to the rotor.

7. A system as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 5, wherein the electricity generator is spaced from the rotor and connected thereto by a drive shaft.

8. A system as claimed in claim 7, wherein the drive shaft is a flexible drive shaft.

9. A system as claimed in any one of claims 3 to 8, wherein the wind vane has a governor, which is activated at a predetermined wind speed.

10. A system as claimed in claim 9, wherein the predetermined wind speed is 25 mph.

11. A system as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 10 including means for controlling and smoothing the power created into an acceptable wave by electrical circuitry into an inverter for the power to be transferred into the mains supply of the property.

12. A system as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 11 including an electricity generator having a stator with skewed laminations.

13. A system as claimed in claim 12, wherein the laminations of the stator are skewed by approximately 11.25°

14. A system as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 13, wherein the electricity generator uses neodymium magnets.

15. A system as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 14 comprising an interface, whereby switching between the external electricity supply and the wind power generated supply can be achieved.

16. A system as claimed in claim 15, wherein such switching is arranged to operate as required.

17. A system as claimed in claim 15, wherein such switching is arranged to operate automatically when the electrical energy being supplied by the wind power reaches a predetermined threshold.

18. A system as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 17 including electrical power storage means.
