Abstract

Prosthetic valves, methods of making medical devices, and methods of treatment are provided. The prosthetic valves of the invention have a valve portion moveable between first and second positions, and a spacing member that has a thickness and protects a portion of the valve portion from contact with a wall of a vessel in which the prosthetic valve is implanted, and/or another structural component of the prosthetic valve, such as a support frame.

Claims

1. A prosthetic valve for implantation in a body vessel, comprising:

a valve member comprising a valve portion moveable between a first position to allow fluid flow through said body vessel and a second position to substantially prevent fluid flow through said body vessel; and

a spacing member with a predetermined thickness disposed on the valve portion.

2. A prosthetic valve according to claim 1, wherein the spacing member comprises a resorbable material.

3. A prosthetic valve according to claim 2, wherein the resorbable material comprises polyglycolic acid.

4. A prosthetic valve according to claim 1, wherein the spacing member comprises a strand.

5. A prosthetic valve according to claim 4, wherein the strand comprises a portion disposed in a thickness of the valve portion.

6. A prosthetic valve according to claim 4, wherein the strand repeatedly passes through a thickness of the valve portion.

7. A prosthetic valve according to claim 1, wherein the spacing member comprises a plurality of strands.

8. A prosthetic valve according to claim 1, wherein the spacing member comprises a bioactive.

9. A prosthetic valve according to claim 8, wherein the bioactive comprises an antithrombogenic, an antiproliferative, or an immunosuppressive.

10. A prosthetic valve according to claim 1, wherein the valve member comprises first and second sections and the spacing member is disposed on the first section.

11. A prosthetic valve according to claim 10, further comprising a second spacing member disposed on the second section.

12. A prosthetic valve according to claim 11, wherein the valve member comprises a third section disposed between the first and second sections and being substantially free of the first and second spacing members.

13. A prosthetic valve according to claim 1, wherein the spacing member surrounds a portion of the valve member.

14. A prosthetic valve according to claim 13, wherein the spacing member comprises a pouch defining a cavity and a portion of the valve member is disposed in the cavity.

15. A prosthetic valve according to claim 1, wherein the spacing member comprises an expandable support frame.

16. A prosthetic valve according to claim 1, wherein the valve member comprises a bioremodellable material.

17. A prosthetic valve according to claim 16, wherein the bioremodellable material comprises small intestine submucosa.

18. A prosthetic valve for implantation in a body vessel, comprising:

an expandable support frame;

a valve member attached to the support frame and comprising a valve portion moveable between first and second positions; and

a spacing member disposed on the valve portion and having a predetermined thickness.

19. A prosthetic valve according to claim 18, wherein the spacing member comprises a resorbable material.

20. A prosthetic valve for implantation in a body vessel, comprising:

an expandable support frame;

a first valve member attached to the expandable support frame and having a first movable valve portion with a first edge;

a second valve member attached to the expandable support frame and having a second movable valve portion with a second edge that cooperates with the first edge to temporarily define an opening;

a first spacing member disposed on the first moveable valve portion; and

a second spacing member disposed on the second moveable valve portion.
