Abstract

A computer program for execution on a computing device is provided to cross-train students in language development skills such as letter-word correspondence, word recognition, vocabulary, and sentence and paragraph comprehension. A set of programs provide an adaptive methodology for training a student in decoding (semantic, syntactic, phonological, and morphological relationships), knowledge of rhymes, synonyms, antonyms, and homophones, spelling, letter-word correspondences, sentence comprehension, grammatical comprehension, working memory, vocabulary, paragraph comprehension, and improved reading comprehension. In each program, students are presented with an animated scene that poses a question, and a set of answers. The set of answers contain a correct response, and a number of incorrect responses or foils. The student advances to more complex levels by satisfying predetermined correct thresholds. Through repetition and intensity, the student'"'"'s language skills are developed.

Claims

1. A method on a computing device for improving a student'"'"'s comprehension of paragraphs, the method comprising:

providing a plurality of paragraph levels, each of the plurality of paragraph levels differing from the other in complexity;

within each of the plurality of paragraph levels, providing a plurality of paragraphs;

for each of the plurality of paragraphs, providing a plurality of questions;

for each of the plurality of questions, providing a correct answer, and at least one foil answer;

presenting one of the plurality of paragraphs from a first one of the plurality of levels;

requiring the student to read the presented one of the plurality of paragraphs;

presenting one of the plurality of questions, associated with the presented one of the plurality of paragraphs, along with the correct answer and the at least one foil answer;

requiring the student to select between the correct answer and the at least one foil answer;

recording whether the student selected the correct answer or the at least one foil answer;

repeating said step of presenting one of the plurality of questions, thru said step of recording, for other ones of the plurality of questions; and

repeating said step of presenting one of the plurality of paragraphs thru said step of repeating said step of presenting one of the plurality of questions, for each of the plurality of paragraphs.

2. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein the differing complexity of the paragraph levels is achieved by differing the number of words per sentence, and the number of sentences in each paragraph.

3. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein the differing complexity of the paragraph levels is achieved by increasing the complexity of the vocabulary used in the paragraphs.

4. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein the paragraph complexity begins with paragraphs appropriate for second grade readers, and increases there from.

5. The method as recited in claim 1 further comprising, providing a plurality of question types, for each of the plurality of paragraphs, each of the plurality of questions belong to at least one of the plurality of question types.

6. The method as recited in claim 5 wherein the plurality of question types comprise:

literal comprehension questions;

causative comprehension questions;

inferential comprehension questions; and

working memory comprehension questions.

7. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein each of the plurality of paragraphs are presented graphically to the student.

8. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein said step of requiring the student to read further comprises requiring the student to indicate when they have completed reading the presented paragraph.

9. The method as recited in claim 8 wherein the student indicates they have completed reading the presented paragraph by selecting an icon with a mouse attached to the computing device.

10. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein the student selects between the correct answer and the at least one foil answer by moving a cursor over the selection, and pressing a button on a mouse to indicate the selection.

11. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein if the student selects the correct answer, a “

ding”

is played, thereby indicating a correct selection.

12. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein if the student selects the at least one foil answer, a “

thunk”

is played, thereby indicating an incorrect selection.

13. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein at least three foil answers are presented along with each correct answer.

14. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein after said step of repeating said step of presenting thru said step of recording, for other ones of the plurality of questions, but before said step of repeating said step of presenting for each of the plurality of paragraphs, determining whether the student has correctly responded to Y% of the presented questions.

15. The method as recited in claim 14 wherein Y% comprises 100%.

16. The method as recited in claim 14 wherein if the student has correctly responded to Y% of the presented questions, continuing directly to said step of repeating for a next one of the plurality of paragraphs.

17. The method as recited in claim 14 wherein if the student has not correctly responded to Y% of the presented questions, repeating said steps of presenting one of the plurality of paragraphs, thru said step of repeating other ones of the plurality of questions.

18. The method as recited in claim 17 wherein when the questions are presented again, graying out previously selected incorrect foils.

19. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein said step of presenting one of the plurality of questions comprises presented a question both graphically and aurally.

20. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein after said step of repeating for each of the plurality of paragraphs, if the student has correctly responded to Z% of the questions, for all of the plurality of paragraphs in the present level, advancing to the next level and repeating all of said steps of presenting thru repeating for paragraphs at the next level.

21. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein after said step of repeating for each of the plurality of paragraphs, if the student has not correctly responded to Z% of the questions, for all of the plurality of paragraphs in the present level, repeating all of said steps of presenting thru repeating for all of the plurality of paragraphs in the present level.

22. The method as recited in claim 21 wherein Z% comprises 95%.

23. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein by performing all of said steps, the student is trained to extract the main point from each of the plurality of paragraphs, which contributes to comprehension of longer passages.

24. A training method on a computer for improving a student'"'"'s paragraph comprehension, the computer having a display for graphical presentation, speakers for auditory presentation, and a mouse for input selection, the method comprising:

providing a plurality of paragraphs which are to be presented to the student, one at a time, along with a set of questions, each of the questions in a set having a correct answer and at least one foil answer, each of the set of questions having at least two types of questions therein;

presenting one of the paragraphs to the student;

presenting the set of questions belonging to the presented one of the paragraphs, one at a time, and recording whether the student selected a correct answer or a foil answer;

if the student correctly responds to Y% of the questions in the set, advancing to another one of the plurality of paragraphs, and repeating said steps of presenting and presenting;

if the student did not correctly respond to Y% of the questions in the set, repeating said steps of presenting and presenting for the same one of the paragraphs.

25. The training method as recited in claim 24 wherein Y% comprises 100%.

26. The training method as recited in claim 24 wherein one of the at least two types of questions comprises questions which ask the student to recall facts from the presented paragraph.

27. The training method as recited in claim 26 wherein another one of the at least two types of questions comprises questions about the cause of events within the paragraph.

28. The training method as recited in claim 26 wherein another one of the at least two types of questions comprises questions that ask the student about hypothesis the student needs to form to understand the paragraph.

29. The training method as recited in claim 26 wherein another one of the at least two types of questions comprises questions which require the student to hold in working memory important details from the paragraph.

30. The training method as recited in claim 24 further comprising:

providing a plurality of levels, each of the levels having a plurality of paragraphs as in claim 24, the plurality of levels differing from each other in their complexity.

31. The training method as recited in claim 30 wherein the complexity differs by increasing the number of words in sentences within the paragraphs, the number of sentences within the paragraphs, and by providing more advanced vocabulary words within the paragraphs.

32. The training method as recited in claim 31 further comprising:

if the student correctly responds to Z% of the questions in the paragraphs presented in said steps presenting, presenting and repeating, advancing to a next level, and repeating said steps of presenting, presenting and repeating for paragraphs in the next level;

otherwise, repeating said steps of presenting, presenting and repeating for paragraphs in a current level.

33. The training method as recited in claim 32 wherein Z% comprises 95%.
