Abstract

A media services interface for use in a readable medium playback device enables synchronization of disparate media playback, network directed playback of media, media playback control via displayed html/javascript file, logging of consumer identifier, media identifier, and playback device identifier in a cookie or log file. The media services comprises a command handler, a properties handler, an event generator, a cookie manager, a navigator state module, an identifier engine, an initialization module, and a bookmark manager. The command handler executes commands received from a connected network, a displayed html/javascript file, etc. The properties handler provides information relating to system states in response to queries including the status of any network connections. The event generator generates events in response to predetermined system occurrences. The cookie manager records information for later reading including the tracking of consumer identifier, playback device identifier, and readable medium identifier triples. The navigator state module maintains information regarding the state of the playback device and the interaction with the readable medium. The identifier engine carries out determination of the identity of the readable medium. The initialization module controls system initialization. The bookmark manager generates bookmarks which preserve positions in the playback of the readable medium for later recall. Network sources can provide media content and issue commands which synchronize the playback of both network and readable medium originated content over multiple playback devices through the use of the synchronization abilities of the media services.

Claims

1. A method of playing content stored on a computer readable medium comprising:

recognizing at a playback device a computer readable medium containing audio/video content having a first navigation structure;

recognizing at the playback device additional content having a second navigation structure, wherein the additional content is associated with the audio/video content; and

rendering from the playback device the audio/video content and the additional content as defined by at least one of the first navigation structure and the second navigation structure.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the audio/video content and the additional content is stored on the computer readable medium.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the additional content is stored on a separate storage medium.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the additional content is programmatic content.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the additional content is stored on a network.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the rendering of the additional content is not defined by the audio/video navigation structure.

7. The method of claim 1 further comprising arbitrating playback of the audio/video content and the additional content with a presentation engine.

8. The method of claim 7 wherein the second navigation structure overrides the first navigation structure.

9. The method of claim 7 wherein the first navigation structure overrides the second navigation structure.

10. The method of claim 7 further comprising accessing specific segments of the audio/video content from the additional content.

11. The method of claim 10 wherein the specific segments of the audio/video content access are not defined in the navigation structure of the audio/video content.

12. The method of claim 10 further comprising simultaneously playing back the specific segments of the audio/video content and the additional content.

13. The method of claim 1 further comprising arbitrating navigator information between a navigation engine for navigating audio/video content and a navigation engine for navigating additional content.

14. The method of claim 13 wherein the navigator information is state information.

15. The method of claim 13 wherein the navigator information is event information.

16. The method of claim 13 wherein the navigator information is command information.

17. The method of claim 13 wherein the navigator information is a user operation.

18. The method of claim 17 wherein the user operation is handled by the navigation engine for navigating audio/video content.

19. The method of claim 17 wherein the user operation is handled by the navigation engine for navigating additional content.

20. A computer readable medium comprising:

audio/video content;

a first navigation structure for navigating the audio/video content;

additional content associated with the audio/video content; and

a second navigation structure for navigating additional content.

21. The computer readable medium of claim 20 wherein the additional content is programmatic content.

22. The computer readable medium of claim 20 wherein the audio/video content can be displayed without the additional content.

23. The computer readable medium of claim 20 wherein the additional content can be displayed without the audio/video content.

24. The computer readable medium of claim 20 wherein the audio/video content and the additional content can be displayed simultaneously.

25. The computer readable medium of claim 20 wherein the second navigation structure overrides the first navigation structure.

26. The computer readable medium of claim 20 wherein the first navigation structure overrides the second navigation structure.

27. The computer readable medium of claim 20 wherein the second navigation structure is used to access specific segments of the audio/video content.

28. The computer readable medium of claim 27 wherein the specific segments of the audio/video content are not defined by the first navigation structure.

29. The computer readable medium of claim 27 wherein the specific segments of the audio/video content and the additional content can be displayed simultaneously.

30. A system comprising:

audio/video content stored on a computer readable medium;

a first navigation structure for navigating the audio/video content;

additional content associated with the audio/video content, wherein said additional content is stored on a separate computer readable medium; and

a second navigation structure for navigating the additional content.

31. The system of claim 30 wherein the additional content is programmatic content.

32. The system of claim 30 wherein the audio/video content can be displayed without the additional content.

33. The system of claim 30 wherein the additional content can be displayed without the audio/video content.

34. The system of claim 30 wherein the audio/video content and the additional content can be displayed simultaneously.

35. The system of claim 30 wherein the second navigation structure overrides the first navigation structure.

36. The system of claim 30 wherein the first navigation structure overrides the second navigation structure.

37. The system of claim 30 wherein the second navigation structure is used to access specific segments of the audio/video content.

38. The system of claim 37 wherein the specific segments of the audio/video content are not defined by the first navigation structure.

39. The system of claim 37 wherein the specific segments of the audio/video content and the additional content can be displayed simultaneously.

40. The system of claim 30 further comprising a playback device for rendering the audio/video content and the additional content as defined by at least one of the first navigation structure and the second navigation structure.

41. The system of claim 30 wherein the separate storage medium is a local storage medium.

42. The system of claim 30 wherein the separate storage medium is on a network.
