Abstract

A smart component for use in various operating environments such as a casing of a combustion turbine. The component may have a substrate, a sensor connected with the substrate for sensing a condition of the component within the casing during operation of the combustion turbine and a connector attached to the substrate and in communication with the sensor for routing a data signal from the sensor to a termination location. The component may include a transmitter in communication with the connector for wirelessly transmitting the data signal outside the casing. A transceiver may be located outside the casing for receiving the data signal and transmitting it to a processing module for developing information with respect to a condition of the component or a coating deposited on the component.

Claims

1. ) A component for use in a casing of a combustion turbine, the component comprising:

a substrate;

a sensor connected with the substrate for sensing a condition of the component within the casing during operation of the combustion turbine; and

a connector attached to the substrate and in communication with the sensor for routing a data signal from the sensor to a termination location.

2. ) The component of claim 1 further comprising:

a transmitter in communication with the connector for wirelessly transmitting the data signal outside the casing.

3. ) The component of claim 2 further comprising:

a protective coating deposited over at least one of the group consisting of the sensor, the connector and the transmitter.

4. ) The component of claim 1 further comprising:

a coating deposited on a surface of the substrate at a sensing location;

a trench formed in the coating;

the sensor formed within the trench; and

a coating deposited over the sensor.

5. ) The component of claim 4 further comprising:

the coating deposited on a surface of the substrate from the sensing location to the termination location;

the trench formed in the coating from the sensing location to the termination location;

the sensor formed within a first portion of the trench; and

the connector formed with a second portion of the trench.

6. ) The component of claim 4 further comprising:

a transmitter in communication with the connector for wirelessly transmitting the data signal outside the casing.

7. ) The component of claim 6 further comprising:

the transmitter contained within a portion of the trench.

8. ) The component of claim 1 further comprising:

a barrier coating deposited on a surface of the substrate;

a trench formed in the barrier coating from a sensing location to the termination location;

the sensor and the connector disposed within the trench; and

backfill material deposited over the sensor and over the connector and at least partially filling the trench.

9. ) The component of claim 8 further comprising:

a plurality of trenches formed in the barrier coating at respective different depths below a surface of the barrier coating;

the sensor and the connector disposed within the plurality of trenches; and

a transmitter attached to the substrate and in communication with the connector for wirelessly transmitting the data signal outside the casing.

10. ) The component of claim 1 further comprising:

a recess formed within the substrate;

the sensor formed within the recess; and

a coating deposited over the sensor and at least partially filling the recess.

11. ) The component of claim 1 further comprising:

the substrate comprising a compressor blade assembly comprising a plurality of compressor blades radially extending from a compressor disk;

a plurality of sensors connected with at least one of the plurality of compressor blades;

a plurality of connectors in communication with respective ones of the plurality of sensors for routing a respective plurality of data signals from the plurality of sensors to the termination location; and

at least one transmitter mounted to the substrate proximate the termination location and in communication with the plurality of connectors for wirelessly transmitting the respective plurality of data signals outside the casing.

12. ) The component of claim 11 further comprising:

a rotating antenna mounted with the compressor disk; and

the at least one transmitter in communication with the rotating antenna.

13. ) A combustion turbine engine comprising:

a compressor comprising a casing;

at least one compressor blade assembly comprising a hub and a plurality of compressor blades radially extending from the hub;

at least one sensor disposed on a surface of at least one of the plurality of compressor blades;

a connector in communication with the at least one sensor for routing a data signal from the at least one sensor to a termination point;

a transmitter proximate the termination point in communication with the connector for receiving and wirelessly transmitting the data signal;

a transceiver external to the compressor casing for receiving the wirelessly transmitted data signal;

a combustor; and

a turbine having a casing.

14. ) The combustion turbine engine of claim 13 further comprising:

a rotating antenna attached to the at least one compressor blade assembly;

a stationary antenna attached to a stationary component within the compressor casing, the stationary antenna sufficiently proximate to the rotating antenna for transmission of the data signal there between; and

a connector establishing communication between the rotating antenna and the transmitter.

15. ) The combustion turbine engine of claim 13 further comprising:

the surface is a leading edge of a compressor blade; and

the at least one sensor comprising material deposited on the leading edge for measuring strain.

16. ) The combustion turbine engine of claim 13 further comprising:

at least one turbine blade assembly comprising a hub and a plurality of turbine blades radially extending from the hub;

a barrier coating deposited on a surface of at least one of the plurality of turbine blades;

a plurality of overlaying thermocouples deposited within the barrier coating for measuring heat flux across the barrier coating;

a connector in communication with the plurality of thermocouples for routing data signals indicative of changes in temperature within the barrier coating from the plurality of thermocouples to a termination point;

a transmitter proximate the termination point in communication with the connector for receiving and wirelessly transmitting the data signals; and

a transceiver external to the turbine casing for receiving the wirelessly transmitted data signals.

17. ) The combustion turbine engine of claim 13 further comprising:

at least one turbine blade assembly comprising a hub and a plurality of turbine blades radially extending from the hub;

a barrier coating deposited on a surface of at least one of the plurality of turbine blades;

a trench formed in the barrier coating;

a sensor formed in the trench; and

a backfill material deposited in the trench over the sensor.

18. ) The combustion turbine engine of claim 17 further comprising:

the sensor comprising a plurality of overlaying thermocouples for measuring heat flux across the barrier coating.

19. ) The combustion turbine engine of claim 13 further comprising:

a processor in communication with the transceiver for processing the data signal to develop information regarding a condition of the surface of the at least one compressor blade during operation of the gas turbine.

20. ) A turbine comprising:

a casing;

at least one turbine blade assembly comprising a hub and a plurality of turbine blades radially extending from the hub;

a sensor disposed on at least one of the plurality of turbine blades;

a connector disposed the at least one of the plurality of turbine blades and in communication with the sensor for routing data signals indicative of a condition of the at least one turbine blade from the sensor to a termination location;

a transmitter proximate the termination point in communication with the connector for receiving and wirelessly transmitting the data signals; and

a first transceiver external to the casing for receiving the wirelessly transmitted data signals.

21. ) The turbine of claim 20 further comprising:

a barrier coating deposited on a surface of the at least one of the plurality of turbine blades;

a trench formed in the barrier coating;

the sensor formed in the trench; and

a backfill material deposited in the trench over the sensor.

22. ) The turbine of claim 21 further comprising:

the barrier coating deposited on the surface from a sensing location to the termination location;

the trench formed in the coating from the sensing location to the termination location;

the sensor formed within a first portion of the trench; and

the connector formed with a second portion of the trench.

23. ) The turbine of claim 20 further comprising:

a barrier coating deposited on a surface of the at least one of the plurality of turbine blades;

a plurality of trenches formed in the barrier coating at respective different depths below a surface of the barrier coating; and

the sensor and the connector disposed within the plurality of trenches.

24. ) A system for use with a gas turbine engine, the system comprising:

at least one sensor attached to a component within a casing of the gas turbine engine;

a connector attached to the component for routing a signal from the senor to a termination location on the component;

a transmitter in communication with the connector for receiving the signal and wirelessly transmitting the signal outside the casing;

a transceiver located outside the casing for receiving the signal; and

a processor in communication with the transceiver for processing the signal to develop information regarding a condition of the component during operation of the gas turbine.

25. ) The system of claim 24 further comprising:

a barrier coating deposited on a substrate of the component;

a trench formed in the barrier coating;

the at least one sensor formed in the trench; and

a backfill material deposited in the trench over the sensor.

26. ) The system of claim 24 further comprising:

the at least one sensor disposed on a surface of at least one of a plurality of compressor blades for measuring strain of a surface area.

27. ) The system of claim 26 further comprising:

a rotating antenna attached to the a compressor blade assembly;

a stationary antenna attached to a stationary component within a compressor casing, the stationary antenna sufficiently proximate to the rotating antenna for transmission of the data signal there between; and

a connector establishing communication between the rotating antenna and the transmitter.
