Abstract

A method of communicating over a wideband communication channel divided into a plurality of sub-channels comprises dividing a single serial message intended for one of the plurality of communication devices into a plurality of parallel messages, encoding each of the plurality of parallel messages onto at least some of the plurality of sub-channels, and transmitting the encoded plurality of parallel messages to the communication device over the wideband communication channel.

Claims

1. A base station comprising a transmitter and a receiver, the base station configured to:

assign some of a plurality of sub-channels to the communication device;

receive group signal-to-interference indications from the communication device;

reduce the number of sub-channels assigned to the communication device in response to the received signal-to-noise indication, resulting in unused sub-channels; and

assign the unused sub-channels to a communication device in an adjacent communication cell associated with another base station.

2. The base station of claim 1, further configured to communicate with the communication device in the adjacent communication cell over the sub-channels assigned to that communication device by the base station.

3. The base station of claim 2, wherein the other base station associated with the adjacent communication cell also communicates with the communication device in the adjacent communication cell.

4. The base station of claim 3, configured to communicate with the communication device in the adjacent communication cell over the same sub-channels as the base station associated with the adjacent communication cell.

5. The base station of claim 4, configured to encode data to be communicated with the communication device in the adjacent cell, wherein the encoding is done in coordination with the base station associated with the adjacent communication cell in such a manner as to provide spatial diversity and at least one of time diversity, frequency diversity, delay diversity and polarization diversity.

6. The base station of claim 5, coupled with a network server, wherein the coordinated encoding occurs through the network server.

7. The base station of claim 1, further configured to assign the unused sub-channels to a plurality of communication devices in a plurality of adjacent communication cells, each of the plurality of adjacent cells comprising its own base station.

8. A communication device, comprising a receiver, the communication device configured to:

receive a signal from a first base station over a plurality of sub-channels;

receive a second communication signal from a second base station over a plurality of sub-channels; and

decode the first and second communication signals in combination.

9. The communication device of claim 8, configured to receive the first and second communication signals over the same plurality of sub-channels.

10. The communication device of claim 9, configured to receive a plurality of communication signals form a plurality of base stations over the plurality of sub-channels.

11. A wireless communication system, comprising:

a wideband communication channel comprising an overall bandwidth segmented into a plurality of sub-channels;

a first communication cell including a first base station, the first base station configured to communicate with a communication device in the first communication cell over the communication channel; and

a second communication cell that is adjacent to the first communication cell and includes a second base station, the second base station configured to also communicate with the communication device over the wideband communication channel.

12. The wireless communication system of claim 11, wherein the second base station is further configured to:

communicate with a communication device in the second communication cell over the wideband communication channel,

assign some of the plurality of sub-channels to the communication device in the second communication cell;

receive a signal-to-noise indication from the communication device in the second communication cell;

reduce the number of sub-channels assigned to the communication device in the second communication cell in response to the received signal-to-noise indication, creating unused sub-channels; and

assign the unused sub-channels to the communication device in the first communication cell.

13. The wireless communication system of claim 12, wherein the second base station is further configured to communicate with the communication device in the first communication cell over the sub-channels assigned to that communication device by the second base station.

14. The wireless communication system of claim 13, wherein the first base station also communicates with the communication device in the first communication cell over the same sub-channels.

15. The wireless communication system of claim 14, wherein the first and second base station are further configured to encode data to be communicated with the communication device in the first communication cell in coordination with each other.

16. The wireless communication system of claim 15, wherein the first and second base station are configured to encode the data in such a manner as to provide spatial diversity and at least one of time diversity, frequency diversity, and polarization diversity.

17. The wireless communication system of claim 16, further comprising a network server coupled with the first and second base stations, the network server configured to:

interface the wireless communication system with another telecommunications network; and

allow the first and second base stations to communicate with each other so as to enable coordinated encoding of the data.

18. The wireless communication system of claim 11, further comprising, in addition to the first communication cell, a plurality of communication cells that are each adjacent to the first communication cell and that each include a base station, each base station configured to also communicate with the communication device over the wideband communication channel.

19. A method for recovering bandwidth in a wireless communication system, comprising:

communicating with a communication device within a first communication cell over a wideband communication channel comprising an overall bandwidth segmented into a plurality of sub-channels;

assigning some of the plurality of sub-channels to the communication device;

receiving a signal-to-noise indication from the communication device;

reducing the number of sub-channels assigned to the communication device in response to the received signal-to-noise indication, resulting in unused sub-channels; and

assigning the unused sub-channels to a communication device in an adjacent communication cell.

20. The method of claim 19, further comprising communicating with the communication device in the adjacent communication cell over the sub-channels assigned to that communication device by the base station.

21. The method of claim 20, further comprising coordinating communication with the communication device in the adjacent cell in order to ensure spatial diversity and at least one of frequency diversity, time diversity, and polarization diversity.

22. The method of claim 19, further comprising assigning the unused sub-channels to a plurality of communication devices in a plurality of adjacent communication cells, each of the plurality of adjacent cells comprising its own base station.

23. A method for receiving a communication from two base stations comprising:

receiving a signal from a first base station over a plurality of sub-channels;

receiving a second communication signal from a second base station over a plurality of sub-channels; and

decoding the first and second communication signals in combination.

24. The method of claim 23, further comprising receiving a plurality of communication signals form a plurality of base stations over the plurality of sub-channels.
