Abstract

In a method and system to generate a function presenting document data stream, at least one structured field is provided that comprises at least one data range. The structured field is provided with a padding range. Coded additional control data are stored in the padding range.

26. A method to generate a function presenting document data stream, comprising the steps of:

providing at least one structured field that comprises at least one data range;

providing the structured field with a padding range; and

storing coded additional control data in the padding range.

27. A method according to claim 26 wherein the padding range is subdivided into at least two parts.

28. A method according to claim 27 wherein the padding range is subdivided into an initial identifier range, a data range, and a remaining padding range.

29. A method according to claim 26 wherein a printer data stream is generated.

30. A method according to claim 26 wherein the additional control data are stored in a structured field in which data exist with which the additional control data are associated.

31. A method according to claim 26 wherein the structured field comprises a map field.

32. A method according to claim 26 wherein an item of identifying information is stored in the structured field from which a data padding range is attached.

33. A method according to claim 26 wherein control data about an output medium are stored in the padding range.

34. A method according to claim 26 wherein control data that correspond to a printer processing interface specification are stored in the padding range.

35. A method according to claim 26 wherein the control data in the padding range contain information about at least one of a length, a width, a surface coating, a color, a transparency, and a weight of a medium.

36. A method to interpret a function presenting document data stream, comprising the steps of:

providing at least one structured field that comprises at least one data range and a padding range;

checking whether additional control data are contained in the padding range; and

reading the additional control data if necessary.

37. A method to transfer function presenting document data from a data source to a data reception location, comprising the steps of:

providing the document data with at least one structured field which comprises at least one data range and a padding range;

storing coded additional control data in the padding range; and

using an identifier in an initial range of the padding range to recognize whether additional control data are contained in the padding range, and if so, reading the additional control data in the padding range.

38. A method according to claim 37 wherein to read the padding range, a length of the padding range is first read at an end of the padding range from a length range field, and then the control data are reread from data fields of the padding range.

39. A method to select a print medium corresponding to a function presenting print data stream in a print system that comprises a plurality of media sources, comprising the steps of:

providing the print data stream with at least one structured field information about attributes of a recording medium material to be used;

analyzing the attributes before a beginning of a print event;

examining whether a recording medium is available that corresponds to all attributes determined in the data stream, and if necessary using that recording medium for printing;

otherwise checking whether a recording medium is available that is available with its original identifier number if such an identifier number was stated in the data stream, and if necessary taking that recording medium into the print device for printing;

when in the preceding step, no medium was taken in, checking whether a medium is available whose name coincides with a possible media name specified in the print data stream;

when the preceding step is also unsuccessful, checking whether in the print data stream an identification number for the medium or for a media input location coincides with a corresponding media or input location number of the print system, and if necessary this medium or this input location is selected; and

when even the above search for a selection of a medium fails, seeking in the print data stream an identifier that specifies whether any available media source of the print system should be used or whether the print event should be aborted with an error message, and then processing.

40. A method according to claim 39 wherein structured fields are contained in the data stream, and wherein within at least one structured field a padding range is provided in which additional control data specifying the attributes of the recording medium are stored.

41. A method according to claim 39 wherein the attributes are stored in at least one of medium description field, a medium modification field, and a media type field.

42. A document data processing system to generate a function presenting document data stream, comprising:

at least one structured field which comprises a plurality of data ranges and a padding range; and

coded additional control data being stored in the padding range.

43. A document data processing system to process a function presenting document data stream, comprising:

at least one structured field that comprises at least one data range and a padding range; and

coded additional control data being stored in the padding range.

44. A document data processing system to process a function presenting document data stream, comprising:

at least one structured field that comprises at least one data range and a padding range;

coded additional control data stored in the padding range; and

information from the data range and from the padding range being read and the read data being used to control a document output system.

45. A document data processing system according to claim 44 wherein the document output system comprises at least one of a print system and an archiving system.

46. A document data processing system according to claim 44 wherein the system can read and evaluate data streams that have been generated.

47. A computer program product run on a computer to at least one of generate, transfer, and interpret a data stream, the program product generating a function presenting document data stream comprising at least structured field that comprises at least one data range, the structured field being provided with a padding range, and stored coded additional data in the padding range.
