Abstract

Methods and systems are provided for communicating data from wireline terminals to mobile terminals in a telecommunications network, which includes a home node associated with the mobile terminal and one or more visited nodes. To establish communication with a mobile terminal, a wireline terminal sends data to a server in the telecommunications network. The server identifies a mobile identification number associated with the mobile terminal, and based on the identified mobile identification number, the server determines a route that excludes the home node when the mobile terminal is out of the geographical area served by the home node. The server then establishes via the determined route a connection to the mobile terminal and sends to the mobile terminal the data received from the wireline terminal.

31. A method comprising:

associating by a server one of a plurality of IP addresses preassigned to the server with a mobile terminal;

receiving a data packet at the server from a packet network destined for the mobile terminal;

determining by the server a route that excludes a home node associated with the mobile terminal when a visited node serves the mobile terminal for communicating the received data packet.

32. The method of claim 31, further comprising:

sending the received data packet from the server to the visited node via the route.

33. The method of claim 31, further comprising:

receiving a second data packet at the server from the mobile terminal destined for a wireline terminal connected to the packet network;

sending the second data packet to the wireline terminal via the packet network.

34. The method of claim 31, wherein determining the route includes:

determining that the mobile terminal is not being served by the home node;

obtaining a temporary number associated with the mobile terminal, the temporary number originally assigned to the visited node;

generating the route using the temporary number.

35. The method of claim 34, wherein the temporary number is a Temporary Local Directory Number (TLDN).

36. A machine-readable medium storing instructions executable by a processor and configured to cause the processor to perform the method of claim 31 when executed by the processor.

37. A method, comprising:

receiving by a first node a data packet from a packet network, the data packet destined for a mobile terminal remote from the first node, the first node having a plurality of preassigned Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, one of the preassigned IP addresses assigned to the mobile terminal, the mobile terminal associated with a home node;

sending the received data packet from the first node to the mobile terminal via a connection between the first node and the mobile terminal, the connection at least partially provided over a wireless link and including a visited node remote from the home node and first node, the connection not including the home node.

38. The method of claim 37, further comprising:

determining that the mobile terminal is not being served by the home node;

obtaining a temporary number associated with the mobile terminal, the temporary number originally assigned to the visited node;

establishing the connection using the temporary number.

39. The method of claim 38, wherein the temporary number is a Temporary Local Directory Number (TLDN).

40. The method of claim 37, further comprising:

receiving a second data packet at the first node from the mobile terminal destined for a wireline terminal connected to the packet network;

sending the second data packet to the wireline terminal via the packet network.

41. A machine readable medium storing instructions executable by a processor and configured to cause the processor to perform the method of claim 37 when executed by the processor.

42. A node, comprising:

a processor;

an interface to a packet network, the interface connected to the processor;

a memory system connected to the processor, the memory system storing software and information usable by the processor, the software including

a connection module that is configured to associate one of a plurality of IP addresses preassigned to the node with a mobile terminal, receive a data packet from the packet network destined for the mobile terminal, and determine a route that excludes a home node associated with the mobile terminal when a visited node serves the mobile terminal for communicating the received data packet.

43. The node of claim 42, wherein the connection module is further configured to send the received data packet to the visited node via the route.

44. The node of claim 42, wherein the connection module is further configured to receive a second data packet from the mobile terminal destined for a wireline terminal connected to the packet network, and send the second data packet to the wireline terminal via the packet network.

45. The node of claim 42, wherein determining the route includes:

determining that the mobile terminal is not being served by the home node;

obtaining a temporary number associated with the mobile terminal, the temporary number originally assigned to the visited node;

generating the route using the temporary number.

46. The method of claim 45, wherein the temporary number is a Temporary Local Directory Number (TLDN).
