Abstract
The present invention is drawn to an electrically “closed” method and apparatus for transmitting and receiving data signals over a high voltage power line. Inductive coupling is employed for coupling and decoupling the data signal directly on to and off of a single power line wire. An exemplary device includes a high frequency inductive coupling toroid for data signals, a second (50-60 Hz) inductive coupling toroid for providing power, signal conditioning electronics for the receive and transmit signal, a fiber optics interface for electrical isolation purposes, and a weather-proof enclosure. In a preferred embodiment, the toroids are hinged for ease of installation on a power line. A pair of such couplings on either side of a fiber-optic isolator can be used to bridge transformers.

21. A method for communicating high-frequency data signals through power lines, comprising:
-
at a first device;
inductively de-coupling first data signals representing first data from the power line;
demodulating the first data signals to provide the first data;
transmitting the first data through a fiber optic cable that is sufficient to isolate power line voltages if such voltages are conducted to the fiber optic cable;
receiving second data from the fiber optic cable;
modulating the second data to form second data signals; and
inductively coupling the second data signals to the power line;
at a second device;
inductively de-coupling the second data signals representing second data from the power line; and
demodulating the second data signals to provide the second data. - View Dependent Claims (22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30)

40. A system for providing communications over a power distribution system having a medium voltage power line, a plurality of low voltage power lines extending to customer residences, and a first transformer coupling the medium voltage power line to the low voltage power lines, the system comprising:
-
an aggregation device having a first modem communicatively coupled to the medium voltage power line, said aggregation device further including a backhaul interface communicatively coupled to said first modem and configured to provide communications via a fiber optic cable;
said aggregation device further including a first inductive coupler communicatively coupled to said first modem;
a first transformer bypass device having a second inductive coupler and a second modem communicatively coupled to the medium voltage power line via said second inductive coupler for communications with said first modem;
said first transformer bypass device further including a third modem configured to communicate with a plurality of communications devices at customer premises;
said first transformer bypass device further including a router in communication with said second modem and said third modem; and
wherein said first transformer bypass device provides a data path between the medium voltage power line and one or more communications devices at customer premises thereby bypassing the first transformer and wherein voltages of the medium voltage power line are not conducted to the plurality of low voltage power lines by said first transformer bypass device.
