Abstract

An apparatus for use with a clamp including a base member configured to be secured to the clamp and at least one energy transmission device carried by the base member. An apparatus for use with a clamp and a probe that carries at least one energy transmission device including a base member configured to be secured to the clamp and an engagement device associated with the base member and configured to engage the probe. A clamp including first and second clamp members, at least one of which is malleable, and a movement apparatus that moves at least one of the first and second clamp members relative to the other. A surgical system including a clamp with first and second clamp members and a device that removably mounts at least one electrode on at least one of the first and second clamp members.

Claims

1. An apparatus for use with a clamp including first and second clamp members defining respective longitudinal axes extending in respective longitudinal axis directions, the apparatus comprising:

a base member configured to be removably secured to at least one of the first and second clamp members by moving the base member in the longitudinal axis direction of the at least one of the first and second clamp members; and

at least one energy transmission device carried by the base member.

2. An apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein the base member includes a longitudinally extending aperture configured to receive the first clamp member.

3. An apparatus as claimed in claim 2, wherein the longitudinally extending aperture is sized and shaped such that the base member will stretch when the first clamp member is inserted into the longitudinally extending aperture.

4. An apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein the base member includes a longitudinally extending aperture configured to receive both of the first and second clamp members.

5. An apparatus as claimed in claim 4, wherein the longitudinally extending aperture is sized and shaped such that the base member will stretch when the first and second clamp members are inserted into the longitudinally extending aperture.

6. An apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein the at least one energy transmission device comprises an electrode.

7. An apparatus as claimed in claim 1, further comprising:

a temperature sensor.

8. An apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein the at least one energy transmission device comprises a plurality of longitudinally spaced energy transmission devices.

9. An apparatus as claimed in claim 8, further comprising:

a plurality of temperature sensors respectively associated with the plurality of longitudinally spaced energy transmission devices.

10. An apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein the base member comprises a substantially electrically insulating base member.

11. An apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein the base member comprises a resilient base member.

12. An apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein the first and second clamp members each include a longitudinally extending slot and the base member includes a longitudinally extending mating structure configured to mate with one of the longitudinally extending slots.

13. An apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein the base member defines a first base member configured to be removably secured to the first clamp member and the at one energy transmission device defines a first energy transmission device, the apparatus further comprising:

a second base member configured to be removably secured to the second clamp member; and

a second energy transmission device carried by the second base member.

14. An apparatus as claimed in claim 13, wherein the first energy transmission device comprises a plurality of longitudinally spaced first energy transmission devices.

15. An apparatus as claimed in claim 14, further comprising:

a plurality of first temperature sensors respectively associated with the plurality of longitudinally spaced first energy transmission devices and defining a predetermined spacing therebetween; and

a plurality of second temperature sensors associated with the second energy transmission device and defining a predetermined spacing therebetween that substantially corresponds to the predetermined spacing of the first temperature sensors.

16. An apparatus for use with a clamp including first and second clamp members, the apparatus comprising:

a first base member configured to be removably secured to the first clamp member;

a second base member configured to be removably secured to the second clamp member;

at least a first energy transmission device carried by the first base member;

at least a second energy transmission device carried by the second base member;

a first electrical connector connected to the first energy transmission device by a first wire and defining a first connector configuration; and

a second electrical connector connected to the second energy transmission device by a second wire and defining a second connector configuration, the second connector configuration being different than the first connector configuration.

17. An apparatus as claimed in claim 16, wherein the first and second electrical connectors are differently shaped.

18. An apparatus as claimed in claim 17, wherein the first electrical connector defines a rectangular cross-section and the second electrical connector defines a circular cross-section.

An apparatus as claimed in claim 16, wherein the first and second clamp members define respective longitudinal axes extending in respective longitudinal axis directions and the first and second base members are configured to be respectively removably secured to the first and second clamp members by moving the first and second base members in the longitudinal axis direction of the first and second clamp members.

20. An apparatus as claimed in claim 19, wherein the first and second base members each include a longitudinally extending aperture configured to receive one of the first and second clamp members.

21. An apparatus as claimed in claim 19, wherein the first and second clamp members each include a longitudinally extending slot and the first and second base members each include a longitudinally extending mating structure configured to mate with one of the longitudinally extending slots.

22. An apparatus for use with a clamp including first and second clamp members, the apparatus comprising:

a single base member;

at least one energy transmission device supported on the single base member; and

means for removably securing the single base member to both of the first and second clamp members.

23. An apparatus as claimed in claim 22, wherein the at least one energy transmission device comprises an electrode.

24. An apparatus as claimed in claim 22, further comprising:

a temperature sensor.

25. An apparatus as claimed in claim 22, wherein the at least one energy transmission device comprises a plurality of longitudinally spaced energy transmission devices.

26. An apparatus as claimed in claim 25, further comprising:

a plurality of temperature sensors respectively associated with the plurality of longitudinally spaced energy transmission devices.
