Abstract

A tool with a driver and a motor assembly for selectively translating the driver along an axis. The driver has a driver blade and a driver body that is coupled the driver blade. The driver body can be formed of titanium and can include an engagement surface with a plurality of teeth that matingly engage respective teeth that are formed on the edge of a flywheel that is associated with the motor assembly.

Claims

1. A tool comprising:

a driver having a driver blade and a driver body that is coupled to the driver blade, the driver body being formed of titanium; and

a motor for selectively translating the driver along an axis.

2. The tool of claim 1, wherein the driver includes a wear-resistant coating is applied to the driver body.

3. The tool of claim 1, wherein the wear-resistant coating is at least partially formed of a tungsten carbide.

4. The tool of claim 3, wherein the wear-resistant coating is at least partially formed of a tantalum tungsten carbide.

5. The tool of claim 2, wherein the wear-resistant coating is at least partially formed of nickel.

6. The tool of claim 2, wherein the wear-resistant coating is at least partially formed of chrome.

7. The tool of claim 1, wherein the driver body defines a cavity with a plurality of locking elements and the driver blade includes a plurality of mating locking elements that engage the locking elements.

8. The tool of claim 7, wherein the locking elements are teeth.

9. The tool of claim 7, wherein the driver further includes a gap filling material that is disposed between the locking elements and the mating locking elements.

10. The tool of claim 9, wherein the gap filling material is selected from at least one material from a group of materials consisting of plastic, epoxy, brass and zinc.

11. The tool of claim 1, wherein the motor includes a member that provides a rotary output and wherein the driver body and the member are in frictional engagement when the driver is to be translated in a predetermined direction along the axis.

12. The tool of claim 1, wherein the motor includes an electric motor.

13. A tool comprising:

a flywheel that is rotatable about an axis;

a driver having a driver body and a driver blade, the driver body defining an engagement surface, the driver blade being fixedly coupled to the driver body; and

a roller that is movable between an unactuated position and an actuated position, wherein positioning of the roller in the actuated position forces the engagement surface of the driver body into contact with a rotating edge of the flywheel to thereby transfer energy to the driver to cause the driver to translate along an axis;

wherein the engagement surface includes a plurality of teeth that matingly engage respective teeth that are formed on the edge of the flywheel.

14. The tool of claim 13, wherein each of the teeth includes a generally flat peak.

15. The tool of claim 14, wherein each of the valleys includes a pair of generally parallel spaced-apart wall members.

16. The tool of claim 13, wherein the driver further comprises a retainer that fixedly couples the driver blade and the driver body to one another.

17. The tool of claim 16, wherein the retainer wedges one of the driver body and the driver blade against the other one of the driver body and the driver blade.

18. The tool of claim 17, wherein the driver blade includes a sloped engagement member that abuts the retainer.

19. The tool of claim 18, wherein the driver body includes a pair of platforms that support the driver blade, one of the platforms being disposed under the sloped engagement member.

20. The tool of claim 13, wherein the driver body includes a cam profile on which the roller rolls.

21. The tool of claim 20, wherein the cam profile includes a ramped first cam portion.

22. The tool of claim 21, wherein the cam profile includes a second cam portion that is configured to at least partially reduce a clamping force that is exerted by the roller onto the driver body at an end of a stroke of the driver.

23. The tool of claim 22, wherein at least one generally flat rail is disposed between the first and second cam portions.

24. A tool comprising:

a flywheel that is rotatable about an axis;

a driver having a driver blade and a driver body, the driver body defining an engagement surface and a cavity, the cavity including a plurality of locking elements, the driver blade includes a plurality of mating locking elements that engage the locking elements; and

a roller that is moveable between an unactuated position and an actuated position, wherein positioning of the roller in the actuated position forces the engagement surface of the driver into contact with a rotating edge of the flywheel to thereby transfer energy to the driver to cause the driver to translate along an axis; and

an electrically powered actuator for at least initiating movement of the roller from the unactuated position to the actuated position;

wherein the engagement surface including a plurality of teeth that matingly engage respective teeth that are formed on the edge of the flywheel when the roller is disposed in the actuated position.
