Abstract

Network entities such as an access device and a gateway analyze messages exchanged during a communication session to identify information items of interest such as, for example, email addresses, universal resource locators, file paths, and attachments. References to and/or the contents of the identified information items may be stored in a database that associates the identified information items with the participants of the communication session. The participants in the communication session may be identified by conventional caller ID information, or by an Internet protocol address, an electronic serial number, or a variety of other identifiers. Information received at the beginning of a later communication session that identifies participant(s) in that communication session may then be used to select from the database, information items from previous communication session, that are associated with the identified participant in the current communication session. Information about the selected information items may be delivered as enhanced caller ID information to parties of the communication session, allowing them to have easy access to the previously exchanged information.

Claims

1. A system supporting collection of enhanced caller identification (ID) information, the system comprising:

a gateway communicatively coupled to a broadband network and at least one wireless interface, the gateway capable of selectively exchanging multimedia information among the at least one wireless interface and the broadband network, and of communicating with a plurality of access devices via the at least one wireless interface;

the gateway capable of receiving information identifying at least one party of a first exchange of multimedia information;

the gateway capable of analyzing the multimedia information of the first exchange of multimedia information, to identify information items having at least one predetermined type;

the gateway capable of automatically storing the identified information items in association with the information identifying at least one party of the first exchange of multimedia information;

the gateway capable of accessing stored information items associated with information identifying at least one party of a second exchange of multimedia information; and

the gateway capable of delivering the accessed information items via at least one of;

the broadband network and the at least one wireless interface.

2. The system according to claim 1 wherein multimedia information comprises at least one of:

streaming video, broadcast video, voice, digital data, text, digitized audio, digitized still images, digitized video, and digitized music.

3. The system according to claim 1 wherein information identifying at least one party comprises at least one of:

a directory number, an electronic serial number, an Internet protocol (IP) address, a media access control (MAC) address, an International Mobile Station Identifier (IMSI) address, and a Mobile Identification Number (MIN) address.

4. The system according to claim 1 wherein the at least one wireless interface is compliant with the Bluetooth V1.2 or compatible personal area network (PAN) specification.

5. The system according to claim 1 wherein the at least one wireless interface communicates using an unlicensed frequency band.

6. The system according to claim 1 wherein the at least one wireless interface communicates at a frequency of approximately 2.4 gigahertz.

7. The system according to claim 1 wherein the at least one wireless interface is compliant with at least one of:

the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g, and 802.11n standards.

8. The system according to claim 1 wherein the broadband network comprises at least one of:

a digital subscriber line (DSL) network, a cable network, a satellite network, a cellular network, and the Internet.

9. The system according to claim 8 wherein the cellular network comprises at least one of:

a global system for mobile communications (GSM) network, a time division multiple access (TDMA) network, a code division multiple access (CDMA) network, and a universal mobile telecommunications system (UMTS) network.

10. The system according to claim 1 wherein the at least one predetermined type comprises an email address type, a universal resource locator (URL) type, a file path type, a telephone directory number type, an attached document type, a spreadsheet type, a slide presentation type, a software type, a video clip type, and an audio clip type.

11. The system according to claim 1 wherein the plurality of access devices comprises at least one of:

a mobile multimedia handset, a personal digital assistant (PDA), and a personal computer (PC).

24. The device according to claim 1 wherein the mobile device comprises one of:

a mobile multimedia handset, a personal digital assistant (PDA), and a personal computer (PC).

25. The device according to claim 1 wherein multimedia information comprises at least one of:

streaming video, broadcast video, voice, digital data, text, digitized audio, digitized still images, digitized video, and digitized music.

26. The device according to claim 1 wherein the items of information comprise one of:

an email address, a universal resource locator (URL), a file path, a telephone directory number, an attached document, a spreadsheet, a slide presentation, a software, a video clip, and an audio clip.

27. The device according to claim 1 wherein the at least one wireless interface is compliant with at least one of:

the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g, and 802.11n standards.

The device according to claim 1 wherein the at least one wireless interface is compatible with a global system for mobile communications (GSM) network, a time division multiple access (TDMA) network, a code division multiple access (CDMA) network, and a universal mobile telecommunications system (UMTS) network.

29. The device according to claim 1 wherein the items of information associated with at least one party of the second exchange of multimedia information are delivered to a user via a display on the mobile device.

12. A method for collecting enhanced caller identification (ID) information during exchange of multimedia information in a communication system, the method comprising:

receiving information identifying at least one party of a first exchange of multimedia information;

analyzing the multimedia information of the first exchange of multimedia information, to identify information items having at least one predetermined type;

storing the identified information items in association with the information identifying at least one party of the first exchange of multimedia information;

accessing stored information items associated with information identifying at least one party of a second exchange of multimedia information; and

delivering the accessed information items to a user.

13. The method according to claim 12 wherein multimedia information comprises at least one of:

streaming video, broadcast video, voice, digital data, text, digitized audio, digitized still images, digitized video, and digitized music.

14. The method according to claim 12 wherein information identifying at least one party comprises at least one of:

a directory number, an electronic serial number, an Internet protocol (IP) address, a media access control (MAC) address, an International Mobile Station Identifier (IMSI) address, and a Mobile Identification Number (MIN) address.

15. The method according to claim 12 further comprising:

exchanging multimedia information via at least one of a wireless interface and a broadband network.

16. The method according to claim 12 wherein the wireless network is compliant with the Bluetooth V1.2 or compatible personal area network (PAN) specification.

17. The method according to claim 12 wherein the wireless network communicates using an unlicensed frequency band.

18. The method according to claim 12 wherein the wireless network communicates at a frequency of approximately 2.4 gigahertz.

19. The method according to claim 12 wherein the wireless network is compliant with at least one of:

the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g, and 802.11n standards.

20. The method according to claim 12 wherein the broadband network comprises at least one of:

a digital subscriber line (DSL) network, a cable network, a satellite network, a cellular network, and the Internet.

21. The method according to claim 20 wherein the cellular network comprises at least one of:

a global system for mobile communications (GSM) network, a time division multiple access (TDMA) network, a code division multiple access (CDMA) network, and a universal mobile telecommunications system (UMTS) network.

22. The method according to claim 12 wherein the accessed information items are delivered via a display of one of:

a mobile multimedia handset, a personal digital assistant (PDA), and a personal computer (PC).

23. A mobile device supporting collection of enhanced caller identification (ID) information during exchange of multimedia information, the mobile device comprising:

at least one processor operatively coupled to a database;

at least one wireless interface communicatively coupled to the at least one processor;

memory comprising software executable by the at least one processor to cause automatic identification of items of information in a first exchange of multimedia information, to store the identified items of information in the database in association with information identifying at least one party of the first exchange of multimedia information, and to deliver, from the database at the initiation of a second exchange of multimedia information, items of information associated with at least one party of the second exchange of multimedia information.
