Abstract

The description describes examples for performing reverse link power control in a mobile network having a plurality of first modem devices that receive and transmit signals to wireless access terminals (ATs) and a second device in communication with the plurality of first devices. Execution is transitioned between a first and a second loop to control reverse link power of one of the ATs. The transition is based on a state of a connection. The first control loop executes at one of the first devices and the second loop executes at the second device.

Claims

1. A method of performing reverse link power control in a mobile network having a plurality of first modem devices that receive and transmit signals to wireless access terminals (ATs) and a second device in communication with said plurality of first devices, said method comprising,

transitioning execution between a first and a second loop to control reverse link power of one of said ATs, said transition being based on a state of a connection,

wherein said first control loop executes at one of said first devices and said second loop executes at said second device.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein transitioning comprises synchronizing between said first control loop and said control loop based on a change of said state.

3. The method of claim 2 wherein said change of said state of said connection comprises transitioning from said connection not in handoff to said connection in soft handoff.

4. The method of claim 1 comprising transmitting to said second control loop a value for a power control threshold calculated by said first control loop.

5. The method of claim 4 wherein transmitting comprises transmitting said value for said power control threshold during transmission of handoff-related data.

6. The method of claim 1 further comprising deriving a power control threshold using said first or second control loop.

7. The method of claim 1 further comprising,

generating, by said one of said first devices, an indicator representing quality of a signal received from said one of said ATs, and

calculating a power control threshold using said indicator.

8. The method of claim 1 further comprising preventing transmission of a packet from said one of said first devices to said second device if said packet is associated with a bad indication.

9. The method of claim 8 further comprising transmitting said bad indication to said second device.

10. The method of claim 1 further comprising determining good or bad indication of a packet using a cyclic redundancy code (CRC) associated with said packet.

11. The method of claim 1 wherein said state of said connection comprises said connection not in handoff, said connection in softer handoff, or said connection in soft handoff.

12. The method of claim 1 further comprising communicating between said first devices and said second device using Internet Protocol (IP) or asynchronous transfer mode (ATM).

13. A system for performing reverse link power control in a radio access network (RAN), said system comprising,

a first modem device that receives and transmits signals to a wireless access terminal (AT), said first device configured to execute a first loop to control reverse link power of said AT based on a first state of a connection, and

a second device in communication with said first device over a network, said second device configured to execute a second loop to control reverse link power of said AT based on a second state of said connection and to synchronize said second loop with said first loop during a transition from said first state to said second state.

14. The system of claim 13 wherein said first state of said connection comprises said connection not in handoff or said connection in softer handoff.

15. The system of claim 13 wherein said second state of said connection comprises said connection in soft handoff.

16. The system of claim 13 wherein said second device is further configured to obtain a power control threshold calculated by said first control loop.

17. The system of claim 13 wherein said second device is further configured to obtain a power control threshold calculated by said first control loop during transmission of handoff-related data.

18. The system of claim 13 wherein said first device is further configured to derive a power control threshold using said first control loop.

19. The system of claim 13 wherein said first device is further configured to generate an indicator representing quality of a signal received from said AT and to calculate a power control threshold using said indicator.

20. The system of claim 13 wherein said first device is further configured to prevent transmission of a packet from said first device to said second device if said packet is associated with a bad indication and to transmit said bad indication to said second device in place of said packet.

21. The system of claim 13 wherein said first device is further configured to determine good or bad indication of a packet using a cyclic redundancy code (CRC) associated with said packet.

22. The system of claim 13 wherein said first device and said second device communicate using Internet Protocol (IP) or asynchronous transfer mode (ATM).

23. A computer program product, tangibly embodied in an information carrier, for performing reverse link power control in a mobile network having a plurality of first modem devices that receive and transmit signals to wireless access terminals (ATs) and a second device in communication with said plurality of first devices, the computer program product including instructions being operable to cause data processing apparatus to,

transition execution between a first and a second loop to control reverse link power of one of said ATs, said transition being based on a state of a connection,

wherein said first control loop executes at one of said first devices and said second loop executes at said second device.

24. The computer program product of claim 23 further comprising instructions operable to cause the data processing apparatus to synchronize between said first control loop and said control loop based on a change of said state.

25. The computer program product of claim 24 wherein said change of state of said connection comprises transitioning from said connection not in handoff to said connection in soft handoff.

26. The computer program product of claim 23 further comprising instructions operable to cause the data processing apparatus to transmit to said second control loop a value for a power control threshold calculated by said first control loop.

27. The computer program product of claim 26 further comprising instructions operable to cause the data processing apparatus to transmit said value for said power control threshold during transmission of handoff-related data.

28. The computer program product of claim 23 further comprising instructions operable to cause the data processing apparatus to derive a power control threshold using said first or second control loop.

29. The computer program product of claim 23 further comprising instructions operable to cause the data processing apparatus to,

generate, by said one of said first devices, an indicator representing quality of a signal received from said one of said ATs, and

calculate a power control threshold using said indicator.

30. The computer program product of claim 23 further comprising instructions operable to cause the data processing apparatus to,

prevent transmission of a packet from said one of said first devices to said second device if said packet is associated with a bad indication, and

transmit said bad indication to said second device.

31. The computer program product of claim 23 further comprising instructions operable to cause the data processing apparatus to determine good or bad indication of a packet using a cyclic redundancy code (CRC) associated with said packet.

32. The computer program product of claim 23 wherein said state of said connection comprises said connection not in handoff, said connection in softer handoff, or said connection in soft handoff.

33. The computer program product of claim 23 further comprising instructions operable to cause the data processing apparatus to communicate between said first devices and said second device using Internet Protocol (IP) or asynchronous transfer mode (ATM).
