Abstract

A system utilizes radio frequency identification (RFID) technology to determine the precise location of assets within a large area or building. RFID tags are attached to the assets. A mobile RFID portal, which includes an RFID tag reader, is moved along a select path through the large area or building to read information from RFID tags present in the vicinity of the path. The mobile RFID portal may be moved along the floor or on an overhead rail. The RFID tag information is analyzed along with data on the positions of the mobile RFID portal along the path and/or data on the times-of-read to determine the location of assets associated with the read RFID tags.

Claims

1. A method for locating assets within an area, each asset having an RFID tag attached thereto, the method comprising:

providing at least one of mobile RFID portal having a range R for reading the RFID tags;

moving the mobile RFID portal along a path through the area to read RFID tags that are located within the range distance R from the path;

associating the location of the assets with points along the path according to RFID tag information read by the mobile tag reader.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the mobile RFID portal comprises a wireless radio for communication with a wireless network, and wherein the method further comprises using the wireless radio to transmit RFID tag information over the wireless network.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the mobile RFID portal comprises a memory for storing data, and wherein the method further comprises:

storing RFID tag information in the memory while the mobile RFID portal is in motion along the path; and

downloading the stored RFID tag information from the memory to a processor after the mobile RFID portal is stationary.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein moving the mobile RFID portal along a path through the area comprises moving the mobile RFID portal on the floor of the area.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein moving the mobile RFID portal along a path through the area comprises moving the mobile RFID portal above the RFID-tagged assets in the area.

6. The method of claim 5 further comprising providing a system of overhead rails in the area for moving the mobile RFID portal above the RFID-tagged assets in the area.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein providing at least one mobile RFID portal for reading RFID tags comprises providing a mobile RFID portal that operates on rechargeable batteries, and wherein the method further comprises providing docking stations in the area for recharging the rechargeable batteries.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein providing at least one mobile RFID portal for reading RFID tags comprises providing a mobile RFID portal having an interface for connection to a wired network for data communications;

and wherein the method further comprises;

providing docking stations in the area with matching interfaces for connecting the mobile RFID portal to the wired network for data communications, and

periodically connecting the mobile RFID portal to the wired network for data communications.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein associating the location of the assets with the points along the path according to RFID tag information read by the mobile tag reader comprises:

determining the positions of the mobile RFID portal along the path; and

associating the RFID tags read by the mobile RFID portal at each position with the position.

10. The method of claim 1 further comprising adding a time stamp to the RFID tag information read by the mobile RFID portal for associating a time-of-read with the associated location of the assets.

11. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

providing a plurality of mobile RFID portals to read RFID tags along a multiple number of paths through the area.

12. A system for locating assets within an area, each asset having an RFID tag attached thereto, the system comprising:

at least one of mobile RFID portal having a range R for reading RFID tags;

means for moving the mobile RFID portal along a path through the area; and

a processor for processing RFID tag information read by the mobile RFID at different positions along the path to determine the location of the assets.

13. The system of claim 12 wherein the mobile RFID portal comprises a wireless radio for transmitting RFID tag information over a wireless network.

The system of claim 12 wherein the mobile RFID portal comprises a memory for storing RFID tag information while the mobile RFID portal is in motion along the path, the system further comprising means for downloading the stored RFID tag information from the memory after the mobile RFID portal is stationary.

15. The system of claim 12 wherein the mobile RFID portal is configured to move along the floor of the area.

16. The system of claim 12 wherein the mobile RFID portal is configured to move above the RFID-tagged assets in the area.

17. The system of claim 16 further comprising a grid of overhead rails in the area for moving the mobile RFID portal above the RFID-tagged assets in the area.

18. The system of claim 17 wherein the grid of overhead rails comprises an electrified rail for supplying power to the mobile RFID portal.

19. The system of claim 12 wherein the at least one mobile RFID portal for reading RFID tags comprises a mobile RFID portal that operates on rechargeable batteries, the system further comprising docking stations for recharging the rechargeable batteries.

20. The system of claim 12 wherein the at least one mobile RFID portal for reading RFID tags comprises an interface for connection to a wired network for data communications, and wherein the system further comprises docking stations having matching interfaces for connecting the mobile RFID portal to the wired network for data communications.

21. The system of claim 12, further comprising a plurality of mobile RFID portals to read RFID tags along a multiple number of paths through the area.
