Abstract

A method and apparatus for managing bookmark information of a media server through a network based on the UPnP AV standard is disclosed. If a request for bookmarking a content item is made, a bookmark item is created and the created bookmark item is linked to the content item by adding the ID of the created bookmark item to the property information of the content item and recording the ID of the content item to be bookmarked in the created bookmark item.

Claims

1. A method of bookmarking a content item stored in a device, comprising the steps of:

(a) creating a bookmark item if a request for bookmarking the content item is made; and

(b) adding an ID of the created bookmark item to property information of the content item.

The method set forth in claim 1, wherein the bookmark item comprises a bookmark item ID for uniquely identifying the bookmark item, an ID of the bookmarked item, a title written in a user-readable format, a bookmark object class, a UDN for storing ID of rendering control service (RenderingControl service) and/or ID of AVTransport service (AVTS) of a media renderer which was presenting the bookmarked item, and a list of state variables for storing the state variables of the RenderingControl Service and AVTransport service.

3. The method set forth in claim 2, wherein the bookmark object class is defined to “

object.item.bookmarkitem”

4. The method set forth in claim 1, wherein the step (a) generates the ID of the created bookmark item according to a predefined rule.

5. The method set forth in claim 1, further comprising the step of deleting a bookmark item whose ID is contained in the property information of the content item when the content item is deleted.

6. The method set forth in claim 1, further comprising the step of deleting the ID of the bookmark item from the property information of the content item whose ID is contained in the bookmark item when the created bookmark item is deleted.

7. A networked apparatus for providing contents through a network, comprising:

a media server for storing content items containing media data; and

a control application for making a request for bookmarking a content stored in the media server according to user'"'"'s request, the control application being executed on a device,

wherein the media server, responsive to the bookmarking request, creates a bookmark item and adds an ID of the created bookmark item to property information of the content item.

The networked apparatus set forth in claim 7, wherein at the request for bookmarking the control application transfers an ID of the content item to be bookmarked, a title written in a user-readable format, a bookmark object class, UDN of rendering control service (RenderingControl Service) and/or AVTransport service (AVTS) of a media renderer which was presenting the item to be bookmarked, and state variables of the RenderingControl service and AVTransport service to the media server as input arguments to a required action.

9. The networked apparatus set forth in claim 8, the transferred bookmark object class is defined to “

object.item.bookmarkitem”

The networked apparatus set forth in claim 8, wherein the control application receives obtains state variables from the rendering control service and AVTransport service by requesting an action for obtaining the state variable, and then transfers the received state variables to the media server.

11. The networked apparatus set forth in claim 8, wherein whole or a part of the title is user-entered data.

12. The networked apparatus set forth in claim 8, wherein the media server creates the bookmark item in such a way that information contained in the input arguments and an ID generated according to a predefined rule are contained in the bookmark item.

13. The networked apparatus set forth in claim 7, wherein the media server transfers the ID of the created bookmark item to the control application as a reply to the bookmarking request.

14. The networked apparatus set forth in claim 13, wherein the media server also transfers data added to the property information of the content item to the control application.

The networked apparatus set forth in claim 13, wherein after transferring the ID of the created bookmark item to the control application, the media server adds the ID of the created bookmark item to the property information of the content item according to a request, received from the control application, for updating the property information of the item to be bookmarked.

16. The networked apparatus set forth in claim 7, wherein the media server stores the bookmark item in a container specified by the bookmarking request.

17. The networked apparatus set forth in claim 7, wherein the media server, responsive to a request for deleting the content item from the control application, deletes the content item and also deletes a bookmark item whose ID is contained in the property information of the content item.

The networked apparatus set forth in claim 7, wherein the media server, responsive to a request for deleting the bookmark item from the control application, deletes the bookmark item, and also deletes the ID of the bookmark item from the property information of the content item whose ID is contained in the bookmark item.
