Method employed by a base station for controlling initial power ramp-up using short codes
First Claim
1. A method for power control of a subscriber unit in a wireless code division multiple access communication system, the method comprising:
- providing at least one first code;
transmitting a portion of the at least one first code at a set initial power level;
dynamically selecting another portion of the at least one first code and transmitting the another portion at a first ramp up amount;
repeating the dynamically selecting until an acknowledgement is received; and
in response to detecting the acknowledgment, transmitting a remainder of the first code of the another portion last transmitted prior to the received acknowledgement.

Abstract
A base station for controlling transmission power during the establishment of a communication channel utilizes the reception of a short code during initial power ramp-up. The short code is a sequence for detection by the base station which has a much shorter period than a conventional access code. The ramp-up starts from a power level that is lower than the required power level for detection by the base station. The power of the short code is quickly increased until the signal is detected by the base station. Once the base station detects the short code, it transmits an indication that the short code has been detected.

4. A subscriber unit comprising:
-
means for transmitting a portion of at least one first code at a set initial power level;
means for dynamically selecting another portion of the at least one first code and transmitting the next portion at a first ramp up amount and repeating the dynamically selecting and transmitting until an acknowledgement is received; and
means, in response to detecting the acknowledgment, for transmitting a remainder of the first code of the another portion last transmitted prior to the received acknowledgement. - View Dependent Claims (5, 6)

7. A subscriber unit comprising:
-
a code transmitter for transmitting a portion of at least one first code at a set initial power level and for dynamically selecting another portion of the at least one first code and transmitting the next portion at a first ramp up amount and repeating the dynamically selecting and transmitting until an acknowledgement is received;
a detector for detecting the acknowledgement; and
the code transmitter, in response to detecting the acknowledgment, for transmitting a remainder of the first code of the another portion last transmitted prior to the received acknowledgement. - View Dependent Claims (8, 9)
