Abstract

A functional module comprises a front cover having a front side defining an electrical distribution function and a back cover having a back side defining a plurality of shielded plugs. A contact set is adapted to communicate electrical power via the shielded plugs for the electrical distribution function. The front cover and said back cover are configured to latch together so as to enclose at least a portion of the contact set.

Claims

1. A functional module comprising:

a front cover having a front side defining an electrical distribution function;

a back cover having a back side defining a plurality of shielded plugs; and

a contact set,

said front cover and said back cover configured to latch together so as to enclose at least a portion of said contact set,

said contact set adapted to communicate electrical power via said shielded plugs for said electrical distribution function.

2. The functional module according to claim 1 further comprising:

a latch extending from said front cover; and

a catch defined by said back cover,

said latch configured to insert into said catch so as to secure said front cover to said back cover.

3. The functional module according to claim 2 further comprising a first plurality of latches extending from the sides of said front cover.

4. The functional module according to claim 3 further comprising a first plurality of catches corresponding said first plurality of latches defined by the sides of said back cover.

5. The functional module according to claim 2 wherein said electrical distribution function is a switch, said function module further comprising a second plurality of latches extending from the top and bottom of said front cover.

6. The functional module according to claim 5 further comprising a second plurality of catches corresponding said second plurality of said latches defined on the top and bottom of said back cover.

7. A functional module adapted to removably connect to a wiring module mounted within an electrical box and connected to a power cable, said functional module comprising:

a body having a front cover and a back cover;

an electrical distribution function accessible on said front cover; and

a power contact housed within said body and accessible through said back cover,

said power contact adapted to transmit electrical power from said wiring module for said electrical distribution function,

said power contact comprising stamped and folded metal.

8. The functional module according to claim 7 further comprising:

a slot defined through said back cover;

a shield disposed on the outside of said back cover around said slot; and

a prong portion of said power contact extending through and supported by said slot,

said shield extending from said back cover substantially the length of said prong portion.

9. The functional module according to claim 8 further comprising a prong clip portion of said power contact configured to form a conductive portion of an outlet socket on said front cover.

10. The functional module according to claim 9 further comprising:

a buss;

a ground clip; and

a ground bar,

said buss supporting said ground clip and said ground bar, said ground bar protruding through said back cover so as to provide a ground path to said wiring module, said ground clip providing a ground contact for said outlet socket.

11. A functional module adapted to removably connect to a wiring module mounted within an electrical box and connected to a power cable, said functional module comprising:

a front side providing access to an electrical distribution function;

a back side opposite said front side;

a contact set; and

a shielded plug disposed on said back side having an insulating shield disposed around and substantially extending the length of a plug portion of said contact set,

said insulating shield configured to both plug into and accept corresponding nonconductive portions of said wiring module so as to fully enclose said plug portion when in electrical communication with said power cable.

12. The functional module according to claim 11 further comprising:

a front cover defining said front side; and

a back cover defining said back side,

said front cover and said back cover configured to latch together so as to enclose at least a portion of said contact set.

The functional module according to claim 12 wherein said plug portion is a prong, said functional module further comprising a slot defined by said back side configured to support said prong and allow said prong to protrude through said back cover within said shield so that said prong is shielded while connecting the functional module to said wiring module.

14. The functional module according to claim 13 further comprising a prong clip portion of said contact set configured to form a conductive portion of an outlet socket on said front side.

15. The functional module according to claim 14 further comprising:

a buss adapted to support a ground clip and a ground bar,

said ground bar protruding through said back cover so as to provide a ground path to said wiring module,

said ground clip adapted to provide a ground contact for said outlet socket.
