1. A computer-controlled illumination system for phototherapy, photodynamic therapy and/or diagnosis, the system comprising:

  • a tunable light source configured to emit illumination light comprising a variable selected spectral output and a variable selected wavelength dependent intensity distribution;

    a sensor configured to detect light emanating from the tunable light source and transmit data representing at least the spectral output and wavelength dependent intensity distribution of the emanating light; and

    a controller operably connected to the tunable light source and the sensor, the controller containing computer-implemented programming that is configured to coordinate the tunable light source, the sensor and the processor such that the programming varies the selected spectral output and wavelength dependent intensity distribution of the illumination light to provide a desired spectral output and wavelength dependent intensity distribution for at least one of the following procedures;

    phototherapy, photodynamic therapy, and diagnosis.
