Abstract

A system and method for minimizing timeouts when enhanced services are requested through a digital home communications terminal (DHCT) requiring discovery of a service group identification (SGID) assigned to the DHCT. A service group map (SGM) includes a plurality of entries. Each entry includes a frequency, a tabulated transport stream identification (TSID), and a SGID associated with one another. The SGM has multiple occurrences of the same frequency. The entries are arranged relative to one another such that first occurrences of each SGID are interspersed alternately with one another. A match for the tabulated TSID can be found in order to determine the SGID assigned to the DHCT before tuning any frequencies that correspond to second occurrences of any of the SGIDs. The frequencies associated with particular occurrences of each SGID may be prioritized.

Claims

1. A method for minimizing delays when enhanced services are requested through a DHCT requiring discovery of a SGID assigned to said DHCT, said method comprising the steps of:

providing a SGM comprising a plurality of entries, each said entry comprising a frequency, a tabulated TSID, and a SGID associated with one another, and said SGM having one or more occurrences of the same said frequencies, and said entries arranged relative to one another such that first occurrences of each said SGID are interspersed alternately with one another;

providing a PAT having one or more TSIDs to be acquired by said DHCT and to define an acquired TSID upon each acquisition occurrence; and

matching one of said acquired TSIDs with one of said tabulated TSIDs to discover said SGID assigned to said DHCT prior to tuning any said frequency corresponding to a second occurrence of any one of said SGIDs.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of prioritizing each of said frequencies associated with said SGIDs, such that said frequencies associated with said first occurrences of each said SGID have the highest priority.

3. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of prioritizing said frequencies of said SGM based upon said frequencies associated with said first occurrences of said SGID being the lowest available to said DHCT.

4. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of prioritizing said frequencies of said SGM based upon said frequencies associated with said first occurrences of said SGID being the highest available to said DHCT

5. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of prioritizing said frequencies of said SGM based upon the number of subscribers associated with said frequencies associated with said first occurrences of said SGID.

6. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of prioritizing said frequencies of said SGM based upon the number of SGIDs associated with a particular said frequency.

7. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step tuning each said frequency associated with said first occurrences of each said SGID prior to tuning to any other said frequency associated with any other occurrence of each said SGID.

8. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of caching one of said acquired TSIDs after determining said one of said acquired TSIDs does not match said one of said tabulated TSIDs.

9. The method of claim 8 further comprising the step of accumulating only a number of said acquired TSIDs in said cache which is less than or equal to the number of said first occurrences of said SGIDs.

The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of forgoing tuning any said frequencies which correspond with a subsequent occurrence of any said SGID unless an attempt to tune any said frequency corresponding to any said first occurrence of said SGIDs fails and said frequency corresponding with said subsequent occurrence of any said SGID is needed for redundancy.

The method of claim 1 wherein said entries are arranged relative to one another such that said first occurrence of each said SGID is before said subsequent occurrence of any of said SGIDs except when one of said frequencies associated with said first occurrence of one of said SGIDs is the same as a subsequent occurrence of any other of said SGIDs.

12. An auto-discovery system for facilitating the discovery of a SGID assigned to a DHCT, comprising:

a PAT including one or more TSIDs;

a SGM comprising a plurality of arranged entries, each said entry comprising a frequency, a tabulated TSID, and a SGID associated with one another, said SGM having one or more occurrences of the same said frequencies, and said entries arranged relative to one another such that an N^th occurrence of each said SGID are interspersed alternately with one another; and

a DHCT adapted to tune to said frequencies from said SGM to retrieve said TSIDs from said PAT to define acquired TSIDs, and said DHCT adapted to compare said acquired TSIDs with said tabulated TSIDs;

wherein said SGID assigned to said DHCT is discoverable prior to said DHCT tuning to any said frequency corresponding to an occurrence of any said SGID subsequent to said N^th occurrences of said SGIDs.

13. The system of claim 12 wherein said N^th occurrence is a first occurrence.

14. The system of claim 12 wherein said tabulated TSID in any one of said entries is distinguishable from every other said tabulated TSID in any other of said entry.

15. The system of claim 12 wherein said SGM is arranged such that only said frequencies which correspond with a first occurrence of each said SGID are attempted to be tuned prior to attempting to tune any said frequencies associated with any subsequent occurrence of any said SGID.

16. A SGM comprising a plurality of entries, each said entry comprising a frequency, a tabulated TSID, and a SGID associated with one another, said SGM having one or more occurrences of the same said frequencies, and said entries arranged relative to one another such that first occurrences of each said SGID are interspersed alternately with one another.

17. The SGM of claim 16 wherein said entries are arranged relative to one another such that Nth+1 occurrences of each said SGID are interspersed alternately with one another and subsequent to said Nth occurrences of said SGIDs.

18. The SGM of claim 16 wherein an acquired TSID from a PAT matches one of said tabulated TSIDs corresponding with one of said first occurrences of said SGID.

19. The SGM of claim 16 wherein said entries are arranged such that an N^th occurrence of each said SGIDs are interspersed alternately with one another.

20. The SGM of claim 16 wherein said entries are arranged such that said frequencies corresponding with said first occurrences of said SGIDs represent the lowest frequencies available to said DHCT.

21. The SGM of claim 16 wherein said entries are arranged such that said frequencies corresponding with said first occurrences of said SGIDs represent the highest frequencies available to said DHCT.

22. The SGM of claim 16 wherein said entries are arranged such that said frequencies associated with the highest number of subscribers correspond with said first occurrences of each of said SGIDs.

23. The SGM of claim 16 wherein said frequencies are arranged based upon the number of SGIDs associated with a particular one of said frequencies.

24. A method for minimizing timeouts when enhanced services are requested through a DHCT requiring discovery of a SGID assigned to said DHCT, said method comprising the steps of:

providing a SGM comprising a plurality of entries, each said entry comprising a frequency, a tabulated TSID, and a SGID associated with one another;

arranging at least a portion of said plurality of entries relative to one another such that an occurrence of every said SGID is interspersed alternately relative one another;

providing a PAT having one or more TSIDs to be acquired by said DHCT and to define an acquired TSID upon each acquisition occurrence; and

matching one of said acquired TSIDs with one of said tabulated TSIDs to discover said SGID assigned to said DHCT prior to tuning any said frequency corresponding to a subsequent occurrence of any one of said SGIDs.

25. An auto-discovery system for facilitating the discovery of a SGID assigned to a DHCT, comprising:

a PAT including a plurality of TSIDs;

a SGM comprising a plurality of entries, each said entry comprising a frequency, a tabulated TSID, and a SGID associated with one another, at least a portion of said plurality of entries arranged relative to one another such that an occurrence of every said SGID is interspersed alternately relative one another; and

a DHCT adapted to tune to said frequencies from said SGM to retrieve said TSIDs from said PAT to define acquired TSIDs, and said DHCT adapted to facilitate comparing said acquired TSIDs with said tabulated TSIDs;

wherein said SGID assigned to said DHCT is discoverable prior to said DHCT tuning to any said frequency corresponding to any subsequent occurrence of any one of said SGIDs.

26. A SGM file comprising a plurality of entries, each said entry comprising a frequency, a tabulated TSID, and a SGID associated with one another, at least a portion of said plurality of entries arranged relative to one another such that an occurrence of every said SGID is interspersed alternately relative one another.

27. An auto-discovery system for facilitating the discovery of a SGID assigned to a DHCT, comprising:

a PAT including one or more TSIDs;

a SGM comprising a plurality of entries, each said entry comprising a frequency, a tabulated TSID, and a SGID associated with one another, at least a portion of said plurality of entries arranged relative to one another such that a first occurrence of each said SGID is before a subsequent occurrence of any of said SGIDs except when one of said frequencies associated with said first occurrence of one of said SGIDs is the same as a subsequent occurrence of any other of said SGIDs; and

a DHCT adapted to tune to said frequencies from said SGM to retrieve said TSIDs from said PAT to define acquired TSIDs, and said DHCT adapted to facilitate comparing said acquired TSIDs with said tabulated TSIDs.

The system of claim 27 wherein said SGID assigned to said DHCT is discoverable prior to said DHCT tuning to any said frequency corresponding to any subsequent occurrence of any one of said SGIDs except when tuning said frequency associated with said first occurrence of one of said SGIDs which is the same as said frequency associated with said subsequent occurrence of any other of said SGIDs.

A SGM comprising a plurality of entries, each said entry comprising a frequency, a tabulated TSID, and a SGID associated with one another, said SGM having one or more occurrences of the same said frequencies, and said entries arranged relative to one another such that a first occurrence of each said SGID is before a subsequent occurrence of any of said SGIDs except when one of said frequencies associated with said first occurrence of one of said SGIDs is the same as a subsequent occurrence of any other of said SGIDs.

30. An auto-discovery system for facilitating the discovery of a SGID assigned to a DHCT, comprising:

a PAT including one or more TSIDs;

a SGM comprising a plurality of entries, each said entry comprising a frequency, a tabulated TSID, and a SGID associated with one another, at least a portion of said plurality of entries arranged relative to one another such that an N^th occurrence of each said SGID is before a subsequent occurrence of any of said SGIDs except when one of said frequencies associated with said N^th occurrence of one of said SGIDs is the same as a subsequent occurrence of any other of said SGIDs; and

a DHCT adapted to tune to said frequencies from said SGM to retrieve said TSIDs from said PAT to define acquired TSIDs, and said DHCT adapted to facilitate comparing said acquired TSIDs with said tabulated TSIDs.

31. A SGM comprising a plurality of entries, each said entry comprising a frequency, a tabulated TSID, and a SGID associated with one another, said SGM having one or more occurrences of the same said frequencies, and said entries arranged relative to one another such that an N^th occurrence of each said SGID is before a subsequent occurrence of any of said SGIDs except when one of said frequencies associated with said N^th occurrence of one of said SGIDs is the same as a subsequent occurrence of any other of said SGIDs.
