Abstract

A luminescent panel has a light emitting portion for emitting isotropic light and a non-light emitting portion. A brightness compensating member has an incident portion and a light exit portion. The incident portion includes at least one inclined surface that is inclined relative to the light exit portion. The inclined surface is arranged to correspond to the non-light emitting portion. The inclined surface is configured so that the brightness of a section of the brightness compensating member that corresponds to the light emitting portion is substantially equal to the brightness of a section of the brightness compensating member that corresponds to the non-light emitting portion. Therefore, a substantially uniform brightness is obtained from the light exit portion.

Claims

1. A lighting apparatus, comprising:

a luminescent panel having a light emitting portion for emitting isotropic light and a non-light emitting portion; and

a brightness compensating member having an incident portion, on which light is incident, and a light exit portion, through which light exits, wherein the incident portion includes at least one inclined surface that is inclined relative to the light exit portion,

wherein the inclined surface is arranged to correspond to the non-light emitting portion and is configured so that the brightness of a section of the brightness compensating member that corresponds to the light emitting portion is substantially equal to the brightness of a section of the brightness compensating member that corresponds to the non-light emitting portion.

2. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the luminescent panel includes a substrate and an area light emitting element formed on the substrate, and

wherein the non-light emitting portion includes a section of the substrate on which the area light emitting element is not formed.

3. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the non-light emitting portion is located around the light emitting portion and in a peripheral portion of the luminescent panel.

4. The apparatus according to claim 3, wherein the luminescent panel is one of a plurality of adjoining luminescent panels, wherein the non-light emitting portions are adjacent to each other, and

wherein the brightness compensating member is formed of a transparent plate and is arranged at a side of the luminescent panels through which light exits to correspond to the luminescent panels, and wherein the inclined surface extends along the peripheral portions of the luminescent panels.

The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the brightness compensating member is formed of a transparent plate, and includes a V-shaped groove formed to correspond to the non-light emitting portion, and wherein at least one of a pair of inclined surfaces define the V-shaped groove is formed of the inclined surface.

The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the non-light emitting portion is one of a plurality of non-light emitting portions, the non-light emitting portions including a non-light emitting portion that is located in a peripheral portion of the luminescent panel and a non-light emitting portion that is not located in the peripheral portion,

wherein the inclined surface corresponds to the non-light emitting portion that is located in the peripheral portion of the luminescent panel, and

wherein the brightness compensating member includes a V-shaped groove that is not located in the peripheral portion of the luminescent panel, and wherein the V-shaped groove is defined by a pair of inclined surfaces that have the same function as said inclined surface.

7. The apparatus according to claim 6, wherein the luminescent panel has an auxiliary electrode, wherein a section of each luminescent panel on which the auxiliary electrode is formed forms the non-light emitting portion that is not located in the peripheral portion of the luminescent panel.

8. The apparatus according to claim 5, wherein the V-shaped groove is a first V-shaped groove, and

wherein the brightness compensating member includes a second V-shaped groove that is located on a side opposite to the luminescent panel and corresponds to the first V-shaped groove.

9. The apparatus according to claim 8, wherein a deepest portion of the second V-shaped groove is displaced from an imaginary plane that is perpendicular to the luminescent panel and contains a deepest portion of the first V-shaped groove.

10. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the luminescent panel includes a substrate and an area light emitting element formed on the substrate, and

wherein the area light emitting element has an auxiliary electrode, and wherein the non-light emitting portion includes a section of the area light emitting element on which the auxiliary electrode is formed.

11. The apparatus according to claim 10, wherein the luminescent panel is one of a plurality of adjoining luminescent panels, and

wherein the brightness compensating member is formed of a transparent plate and is arranged at a side of the luminescent panels through which light exits to correspond to the luminescent panels.

12. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein, when projected onto the luminescent panel, the inclined surface has a width that is wider than the width of the non-light emitting portion.

The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein a distance a₁ from an end of the inclined surface that is farthest from the luminescent panel to the luminescent panel, a width A of the inclined surface when projected onto the luminescent panel, an angle d defined by the inclined surface and a plane that is perpendicular to the luminescent panel, a refractive index N₁ of air, a refractive index N₂ of the brightness compensating member, and a view angle θ

14. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the inclined surface is either optically polished or mirror finished.

15. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the inclined surface is a first inclined surface, and wherein the light exit portion includes at least one second inclined surface that is inclined relative to the incident portion, the second inclined surface being arranged to correspond to the first inclined surface.

The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the light emitting portion emits white light, wherein a diffusion portion is provided on a surface of the brightness compensating member that faces the luminescent panel except for the inclined surface, and wherein the brightness compensating member is arranged so that a space exists between the diffusion portion and the luminescent panel.

17. The apparatus according to claim 16, wherein the diffusion portion is formed of a diffusion sheet having a diffusion surface, and wherein the diffusion sheet is optically integrated with the brightness compensating member so that the diffusion surface faces the luminescent panel.

18. The apparatus according to claim 16, wherein the diffusion portion is directly formed on a surface of the brightness compensating member that faces the luminescent panel.

19. The apparatus according to claim 16, wherein a diffusion portion is formed on a surface of the luminescent panel that faces the brightness compensating member, and wherein the diffusion portion includes a diffusion surface that faces the brightness compensating member.

The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the brightness compensating member is attached to the luminescent panel with a transparent adhesive, the refractive index of the adhesive being equal to or within a several percent difference from the refractive index of the brightness compensating member.

21. The apparatus according to claim 2, wherein the area light emitting element is formed of an organic EL element.

22. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the lighting apparatus is used as a backlight of a liquid crystal display.

23. The apparatus according to claim 22, wherein the ratio of the luminance of a section of the brightness compensating member that corresponds to the non-light emitting portion to the luminance of a section of the brightness compensating member that corresponds to the light emitting portion is no less than 0.8.

24. A lighting apparatus, comprising:

a plurality of luminescent panels each having a light emitting portion for emitting isotropic light and a non-light emitting portion provided around the light emitting portion, wherein the luminescent panels are arranged so that the non-light emitting portions are adjacent to each other; and

a brightness compensating member that is formed of a transparent plate and is arranged at a side of the luminescent panels through which light exits to correspond to the luminescent panels,

wherein a surface of the brightness compensating member that faces the luminescent panels has a V-shaped groove that extends along the non-light emitting portions, wherein the V-shaped groove is formed so that the brightness of a section of the brightness compensating member that corresponds to the light emitting portion is substantially equal to the brightness of a section of the brightness compensating member that corresponds to the non-light emitting portions.

25. The apparatus according to claim 24, wherein an open end of the V-shaped groove has a width that is wider than the space between each adjacent pair of the light emitting portions.

26. The apparatus according to claim 24, wherein a depth A₁ of the V-shaped groove, a width A₂ of the open end of the V-shaped groove, an apex angle α

of the V-shaped groove, a refractive index N₁ of air, a refractive index N₂ of the brightness compensating member, and a viewing angle θ

27. A lighting apparatus, comprising:

a plurality of adjoining luminescent panels each having a light emitting portion for emitting isotropic light and an auxiliary electrode, wherein a section of each luminescent panel on which the auxiliary electrode is formed forms a non-light emitting portion; and

a brightness compensating member that is formed of a transparent plate and is arranged at a side of the luminescent panels through which light exits to correspond to the luminescent panels,

wherein a surface of the brightness compensating member that faces the luminescent panels has a V-shaped groove that is arranged to correspond to the non-light emitting portions, wherein the V-shaped groove is formed so that the brightness of a section of the brightness compensating member that corresponds to the light emitting portions is substantially equal to the brightness of a section of the brightness compensating member that corresponds to the non-light emitting portions.

28. A lighting apparatus, comprising:

a plurality of luminescent panels each having a light emitting portion for emitting isotropic light and a non-light emitting portion provided around the light emitting portion, wherein the luminescent panels are arranged so that the non-light emitting portions are adjacent to each other; and

a brightness compensating member that is formed of a transparent plate and is arranged at a side of the luminescent panels through which light exits to correspond to the luminescent panels,

wherein a surface of the brightness compensating member that faces the luminescent panels has a V-shaped groove that extends along the non-light emitting portions, wherein the V-shaped groove is formed so that the brightness of a section of the brightness compensating member that corresponds to the non-light emitting portion is increased to approaches the brightness of a section of the brightness compensating member that corresponds to the light emitting portions.
