Abstract

An integrated distributed control system incorporates a plurality of micro electromechanical system (MEMS) modules formed into a functional network which is in turn integrated into a management network. The functional network is configured to sense a condition such as an operating characteristic of a machine or the temperature within an area and to provide control functions to effect changes in the condition.

Claims

1. A distributed heating ventilation and air-conditioning system for a building comprising:

a first distributed thermal plant operable to provide conditioned air to a first of a plurality of areas of the building; and

a first micro electromechanical system module network within a first of a plurality of micro-areas of the first of the plurality of areas of the building, the first micro electromechanical system module network integrated into a building control network, and operable to control the amount of conditioned air provided by the first distributed thermal plant to the first of the plurality of micro-areas.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the first micro electromechanical system module network comprises:

a plurality of micro electromechanical system modules, each of the plurality of micro electromechanical system modules including a processor, a transceiver and a sensor suite.

3. The system of claim 2, wherein the sensor suite includes one or more sensors selected from the group of sensors consisting of a pressure sensor, a relative humidity sensor, a temperature sensor, a carbon dioxide sensor, an ammonia sensor, flow sensor and a volatile organic compound sensor.

4. The system of claim 3, wherein the sensor suite comprises a temperature sensor, a carbon dioxide sensor, a relative humidity sensor, a carbon monoxide sensor and a volatile organic compound sensor.

5. The system of claim 1, further comprising:

a second micro electromechanical system module network within the first of the plurality of micro-areas, the second micro electromechanical system module network integrated into the building control network, and operable to detect a safety condition within the first of the plurality of micro-areas.

6. The system of claim 5, wherein the second micro electromechanical system module network comprises:

a plurality of micro electromechanical system modules, each of the plurality of micro electromechanical system modules including a processor, a transceiver and a sensor suite including one or more sensors selected from the group of sensors consisting of a fire/smoke/flame sensor, a chemical sensor and a biological sensor.

7. The system of claim 1, further comprising:

a third micro electromechanical system module network within the first of the plurality of micro-areas, the third micro electromechanical network integrated into the building control network, and operable to detect a security condition within the first of the plurality of micro-areas.

8. The system of claim 7, wherein the third micro electromechanical system module network comprises:

a plurality of micro electromechanical system modules, each of the plurality of micro electromechanical system modules including a processor, a transceiver and a sensor suite including one or more sensors selected from the group of sensors consisting of a biometric sensor, a complementary metal oxide semiconductor sensor, a smart asset tagging/tracking sensor and a smart card sensor.

9. The system of claim 1, further comprising:

a fourth micro electromechanical system module network integrated into the building control network, and operable to detect an operating characteristic of the distributed thermal plant.

10. The system of claim 9, wherein the fourth micro electromechanical system module network comprises:

a plurality of micro electromechanical system modules, each of the plurality of micro electromechanical system modules including a processor, a transceiver and a sensor suite including one or more sensors selected from the group of sensors consisting of a pressure sensor, a flow sensor, a power sensor, an energy sensor and a vibration sensor.

11. The system of claim 1, wherein the distributed thermal plant comprises:

a micro-turbine generator; and

a fuel cell.

12. The system of claim 1, further comprising:

a second distributed thermal plant operable to provide conditioned air to a second of the plurality of areas of the building; and

a fifth control micro electromechanical system module network within one of a plurality of micro-areas of the second of the plurality of areas of the building, the fifth micro electromechanical system module network integrated into the building control network, and operable to control the amount of conditioned air provided by the second distributed thermal plant into the one of a plurality of micro-areas of the second of the plurality of areas.

13. The system of claim 1, further comprising:

a sixth micro electromechanical system module network within a second of the plurality of micro-areas of the first of the plurality of areas of the building, the sixth micro electromechanical network integrated into the building control network, and operable to control the amount of conditioned air provided by the first distributed thermal plant into the second of the plurality of micro-areas of the first of the plurality of areas.

14. A control system comprising:

a control network; and

a first micro electromechanical system module network integrated into the control network, and operable to determine an operating characteristic of one of a plurality of subsystems of a first machine, the first micro electromechanical system module network further operable to effect a change in the operation of the first machine.

15. The system of claim 14, wherein the first micro electromechanical system module network comprises:

a processor, a transceiver and a sensor suite including one or more sensors selected from the group of sensors consisting of a pressure sensor, a flow sensor, a power sensor, an energy sensor and a vibration sensor.

16. The system of claim 14, further comprising:

a second micro electromechanical system module network integrated into the control network and operable to determine an operating characteristic of one of a plurality of subsystems of a second machine, the second micro electromechanical system module network further operable to effect a change in the operation of the second machine.

17. The system of claim 16, wherein:

the first micro electromechanical system module network is operable effect a change in the operation of a first distributed thermal plant; and

the second micro electromechanical system module network is operable effect a change in the operation of a second distributed thermal plant.

18. A method of providing conditioned air to a location within a building comprising:

controlling a distributed thermal plant to provide conditioned air to an area of the building;

transmitting from a first electromechanical system module to a first network a first signal indicative of a sensed temperature;

receiving the first signal with a second electromechanical system module;

controlling the amount of conditioned air provided to a location in the area based upon the received first signal; and

transmitting from the second electromechanical system module to a second network a second signal indicative of the sensed temperature.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein:

the method further comprises receiving the second signal with a third electromechanical system module; and

controlling the distributed thermal plant comprises controlling the distributed thermal plant with the third electromechanical system module based upon the received second signal.

20. The method of claim 18, wherein controlling the amount of conditioned air provided to a location comprises:

controlling the position of a damper using a control signal from a third electromechanical system module.
