Abstract

The present invention provides a method for controlling copyrights of digital data in a database system including real time transmission of a digital picture. Copyrights are controlled using one or more of the following, as necessary, in addition to a permit key: a copyright control program, copyright information or copyright control message. The copyright control program, the copyright information and the copyright control message are supplied together with the permit key, or they are supplied together with the data. Otherwise, a part of them is supplied together with the permit key and the other part of them is supplied together with the data. The data, the permit key, the copyright control message, the copyright information and the copyright control program are (1) transmitted while encrypted, but are decrypted when used, or (2) they are transmitted while encrypted and decrypted for display only, otherwise remaining encrypted, or (3) they may not be encrypted at all.

51. A digital data management apparatus, comprising:

means for encrypting digital data to produce encrypted digital data supplied to a user;

means for using a utilization permit key pre-defined to permit at least one of displaying, editing, storing, copying, and transferring of said digital data;

means for decrypting said encrypted digital data to decrypted digital data by using a display permit key, which is said utilization permit key permitting displaying of said digital data, and displaying said decrypted digital data;

means for decrypting said encrypted digital data to decrypted digital data by using an edit permit key, which is said utilization permit key permitting editing of said digital data, and editing said decrypted digital data;

means for decrypting said encrypted digital data to decrypted digital data by using a storage permit key, which is said utilization permit key permitting storing of said digital data, encrypting again said decrypted digital data to encrypted digital data by using said storage permit key, and storing said encrypted digital data;

means for decrypting said encrypted digital data to decrypted digital data by using a copy permit key, which is said utilization permit key permitting copying of said digital data, encrypting again said decrypted digital data to encrypted digital data by using said copy permit key, and copying said encrypted digital data; and

means for decrypting said encrypted digital data to decrypted digital data by using a transfer permit key, which is said utilization permit key permitting transferring of said digital data, encrypting again said decrypted digital data to encrypted digital data by using said transfer permit key, and transferring said encrypted digital data.

52. The digital data management apparatus of claim 51, wherein said utilization key is hierarchized;

and said utilization key at an upper hierarchy level includes a function of said utilization key at a lower hierarchy level.

53. The digital data management apparatus of claim 52, wherein said transfer permit key is said utilization permit key at the highest hierarchy level.

54. The digital data management apparatus of claim 52, wherein said edit permit key is said utilization permit key at the highest hierarchy level.

55. The digital data management apparatus of claim 51, further comprising means for using a copyright management program for managing utilization of said digital data.

56. The digital data management apparatus of claim 55, wherein said copyright management program is included in said utilization permit key.

57. The digital data management apparatus of claim 51, wherein copyright information is added to said digital data.

58. The digital data management apparatus of claim 57, wherein said copyright information includes original copyright information and edit copyright information added to said digital data by a copyright management program.

59. The digital data management apparatus of claim 57, wherein said copyright information must be present in order to use said digital data.

60. A digital data management method, comprising:

encrypting digital data to produce encrypted digital data supplied to a user; and

using a utilization permit key on said encrypting digital data, said utilization permit key pre-defined to include at least two of;

a display permit key adapted to permit displaying of said digital data,

an edit permit key adapted to permit editing of said digital data,

a storage permit key adapted to permit storing of said digital data,

a copy permit key adapted to permit copying of said digital data, and

a transfer permit key adapted to permit transferring of said digital data.

61. The digital data management method of claim 60, wherein said utilization key is hierarchized;

and said utilization key at an upper hierarchy level includes a function of said utilization key at a lower hierarchy level.

62. The digital data management method of claim 61, wherein said transfer permit key is said utilization permit key at the highest hierarchy level.

63. The digital data management method of claim 61, wherein said edit permit key is said utilization permit key at the highest hierarchy level.

64. The digital data management method of claim 60, further comprising using a copyright management program for managing utilization of said digital data.

65. The digital data management method of claim 64, wherein said copyright management program is included in said utilization permit key.

66. The digital data management method of claim 60, wherein copyright information is added to said digital data.

67. The digital data management method of claim 66, wherein said copyright information includes original copyright information and edit copyright information added to said digital data by a copyright management program.

68. The digital data management method of claim 66, wherein said copyright information must be present in order to use said digital data.

69. A digital data management method, comprising:

encrypting digital data to produce encrypted digital data supplied to a user;

using a utilization permit key on said encrypting digital data, said utilization permit key pre-defined to include a first permit key and a second permit key;

said first permit key pre-defined to permit at least one function of displaying, editing, storing, copying, and transferring of said digital data; and

said second permit key pre-defined to permit at least one function of displaying, editing, storing, copying, and transferring of said digital data, wherein at least one function of the second permit key is different than at least one function of the first permit key.

70. The digital data management method of claim 69, wherein said utilization key is hierarchized;

and said utilization key at an upper hierarchy level includes a function of said utilization key at a lower hierarchy level.

71. The digital data management method of claim 70, wherein said second permit key permits the function of transferring and is said utilization permit key at the highest hierarchy level.

72. The digital data management method of claim 70, wherein said second permit key permits the function of editing and is said utilization permit key at the highest hierarchy level.

73. The digital data management method of claim 69, further comprising using a copyright management program for managing utilization of said digital data.

74. The digital data management method of claim 73, wherein said copyright management program is included in said utilization permit key.

75. The digital data management method of claim 69, wherein copyright information is added to said digital data.

76. The digital data management method of claim 75, wherein said copyright information includes original copyright information and edit copyright information added to said digital data by a copyright management program.

77. The digital data management method of claim 75, wherein said copyright information must be present in order to use said digital data.

78. A digital data management method, comprising:

encrypting digital data to produce encrypted digital data supplied to a user;

using a utilization permit key on said encrypting digital data, said utilization permit key pre-defined to permit at least one of displaying, editing, storing, copying, and transferring of said digital data; and

wherein copyright information must be present in said digital data in order to use said digital data.

79. The digital data management method of claim 78, wherein said utilization key is hierarchized;

and said utilization key at an upper hierarchy level includes a function of said utilization key at a lower hierarchy level.

80. The digital data management method of claim 79, wherein said utilization permit key at the highest hierarchy level permits transferring.

81. The digital data management method of claim 79, wherein said utilization permit key at the highest hierarchy level permits editing.

82. The digital data management method of claim 78, further comprising using a copyright management program for managing utilization of said digital data.

83. The digital data management method of claim 82, wherein said copyright management program is included in said utilization permit key.

84. The digital data management method of claim 78, wherein said copyright information includes original copyright information and edit copyright information added to said digital data by a copyright management program.

85. A digital data management method, comprising:

encrypting digital data to produce encrypted digital data supplied to a user;

using a utilization permit key on said encrypting digital data, said utilization permit key pre-defined to permit at least one of displaying, editing, storing, copying, and transferring of said digital data; and

using a copyright management program for managing utilization of said digital data, wherein said copyright management program is included in said utilization permit key.

86. The digital data management method of claim 85, wherein said utilization key is hierarchized;

and said utilization key at an upper hierarchy level includes a function of said utilization key at a lower hierarchy level.

87. The digital data management method of claim 86, wherein said utilization permit key at the highest hierarchy level permits transferring.

88. The digital data management method of claim 86, wherein said utilization permit key at the highest hierarchy level permits editing.

89. The digital data management method of claim 85, wherein said copyright information includes original copyright information and edit copyright information added to said digital data by a copyright management program.
