Abstract

A method for formatting images for angle specific viewing in a scanning aperture dimensional display device. Input images are rearranged into slices or sections to create a set of output images. The images derived from the output images are formed by rearranging the image slices or sections and disposing the image to be viewed directly behind an open aperture in an aperture plate in a scanning aperture display device. By cycling the images in relation to the cycling of the open apertures of the aperture plate, angle specific viewing of the scanning aperture display can be provided. The number angles for angle specific viewing can be varied and can range from 2-1000 distinct viewing angles from a single scanning aperture display device.

Claims

1. A method for formatting images for angle specific viewing in a scanning aperture display device comprising:

selecting an input column index (ci) and an input frame index (fi);

determining a desired output frame index (fo) relating to the selected input column index;

determining a desired output column index (co) using the selected input frame index and selected input column index; and

building the desired output column in the desired output frame.

2. The method according to claim 1, wherein said building comprises copying image information within the determined input column within the determined input frame into the desired output frame within the desired output column.

3. The method according to claim 1, further comprising identifying a number of discreet angles for the angle specific viewing before said selecting.

4. The method according to claim 2, further comprising centering the built image behind a set of cycling apertures.

5. The method according to claim 4, wherein said centering further comprises:

evaluating returned output column indices and output frame indices for validity;

disregarding invalid results and repeating all steps when an invalid result is detected; and

performing said copying when valid results are detected.

6. The method according to claim 1, wherein said output frame index (fo) is calculated using the following relation:

7. The method according to claim 1, wherein said output column index (co) is calculated using the following relation:

8. The method according to claim 1, wherein said output column index (co) is calculated using the following relation:

9. The method according to claim 2, wherein said copying is performed according to the following relation:

copy pixels from FI[fi].col[ci] to FO[fo].col[co]

where FI[fi] is the set of input frames corresponding to the input frame indices (fi), FO[fo] is the set of output frames corresponding to output frame indices (fo), col[ci] is the corresponding input columns based on the input column indices (ci) and col[co] is the corresponding output columns based on the output column indices (co).

10. A method for formatting images for angle specific viewing in a scanning aperture display device comprising:

selecting an output column index (co) and an output frame index (fo);

determining a source input frame index (fi) relating to the selected output column index;

determining a source input column index (ci) using the selected output frame index and selected output column index; and

building the selected output column index in the selected output frame index.

11. The method according to claim 10, wherein said building comprises copying image information within the determined input columns within the determined input frames, into the selected output frames of the selected output columns.

12. The method according to claim 10, further comprising identifying a number of discreet angles for the angle specific viewing before said step of selecting.

13. The method according to claim 10, further comprising centering the built image behind a set of apertures.

14. The method according to claim 13, wherein said centering further comprises compensating for missing columns by filling the missing columns to retain a predetermined size of the output frame.

15. The method according to claim 10, wherein said source input frame index (fi) is calculated using the following relation;

16. The method according to claim 15, wherein said determining of said input frame index is performed for all output frame indices (fo) in (0 . . . A−

17. The method according to claim 10, wherein said step of determining source input column index is calculated using the following relation:

18. The method according to claim 10, wherein said source input frame index is calculated using the following relation;

19. The method according to claim 10, wherein said step of determining source input column index is calculated using the following relation:

21. The method according to claim 19, wherein said calculating of the input frame index (fi) relating to the selected output column index (ci) is performed for all output frame indices fo in (0 . . . A−

1), where X is X is the total number of output column indices.

22. The method according to claim 11, wherein said copying is performed according to the following relation:

copy pixels from FI[fi].col[ci] to FO[fo].col[co]

where FI[fi] is the set of input frames corresponding to the input frame indices (fi), FO[fo] is the set of output frames corresponding to output frame indices (fo), col[ci] is the corresponding input columns based on the input column indices (ci) and col[co] is the corresponding output columns based on the output column indices (co).

23. A method for formatting images for angle specific viewing in a scanning aperture display device comprising:

re-arranging a set of input frame images to create a set of output images; and

shifting the set of output images along a horizontal axis such that a center of each output image is positioned behind an aperture through which the image is to be viewed.

24. The method according to claim 23, wherein said re-arranging comprises:

dividing each frame of the set of input images into a plurality of slices; and

producing the output image from said plurality of slices.

25. The method according to claim 24, wherein said producing comprises selecting slices from the same spatial location in each of said input frame images and arranging said selected slices in a predetermined order to produce the output image.

26. The method according to claim 23, wherein said output images are each translated horizontally by a predetermined number of slice-widths in order to position the center of each image behind the position of a single open aperture.

27. The method according to claim 23, wherein said output images are each translated horizontally by a predetermined number of slice-widths in order to position the center of each projection image behind the position of more than one open aperture.

34. The method according to claim 23, further comprising positioning the center most section from each image directly behind an open aperture in the scanning aperture display device.

28. A method for formatting images for angle specific viewing in a scanning aperture display device comprising:

re-arranging a set of input frame images to create a set of output images;

shifting the set of output images such that a center of each output image is positioned behind an aperture through which the image is to be viewed; and

ordering the set output images to be coordinated with the cycling of open apertures in the scanning aperture display.

29. The method according to claim 28, wherein said re-arranging comprises:

dividing each frame of the set of input images into a plurality of slices; and

producing the output image as a projection image from said plurality of slices.

30. The method according to claim 29, wherein said re-arranging comprises identifying bands of images corresponding to related slices in each input image frame, each band consisting of a number of slices placed side by side.

31. The method according to claim 30, wherein the number of identified bands is equal in number to the number of horizontal pixels, divided by the number of discreet viewing angles of the display device.

32. The method according to claim 28, wherein said re-arranging comprises:

dividing the input image frames into sections;

labeling the sections; and

reconfiguring the sections into images.

33. The method according to claim 32, wherein each frame comprises one section of all viewable input images from a predetermined viewing angle, and assembled such that the numerical order runs in a predetermined order.
