Abstract

An implantable fluid management device, designed to drain excess fluid from a variety of locations in a living host into a second location within the host, such as the bladder of that host. The device may be used to treat ascites, chronic pericardial effusions, normopressure hydrocephalus, hydrocephalus, pulmonary edema, or any fluid collection within the body of a human, or a non-human mammal.

Claims

1. A fluid drainage system for draining fluid from a first body cavity to a second body cavity, the system comprising a motorized pump.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the first body cavity comprises a pleural cavity.

3. The system of claim 2, wherein the second body cavity comprises a peritoneal cavity.

4. The system of claim 2, wherein the second body cavity comprises a bladder.

5. The system if claim 2, wherein the second body cavity comprises a vasculature.

6. The system of claim 1, wherein the first body cavity comprises a ventricle of a brain.

7. The system of claim 6, wherein the second body cavity comprises a peritoneal cavity.

8. The system of claim 6, wherein the second body cavity comprises a bladder.

9. The system of claim 6, wherein the second body cavity comprises a vasculature.

10. The system of claim 1, further comprising sensors configured to prevent activation of the pump under specific circumstances.

11. The system of claim 1, wherein the system is configured to activate the pump when a sensor senses a specific circumstance.

12. The system of claim 1, wherein the system is configured to communicate information to an external source, wherein the information is regarding a pump function of the pump.

13. The system of claim 1, wherein the system is configured to enable programming of the pump function from an external source.

14. The system of claim 1, wherein the first body cavity comprises a peritoneal cavity.

15. The system of claim 14, wherein the second body cavity comprises a vasculature.

16. The system of claim 15, wherein the second body cavity comprises a bladder.

17. A method of draining a fluid from a first body cavity to a second body cavity, the method comprising pressurizing the fluid with a motorized pump.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein the first body cavity comprises a pleural cavity.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein the second body cavity comprises a peritoneal cavity.

20. The method of claim 18, wherein the second body cavity comprises a bladder.

21. The method if claim 18, wherein the second body cavity comprises a vasculature.

22. The method of claim 17, wherein the first body cavity comprises a ventricle of a brain.

23. The method of claim 22, wherein the second body cavity comprises a peritoneal cavity.

24. The method of claim 19, wherein the second body cavity comprises a bladder.

25. The method of claim 19, wherein the second body cavity comprises a vasculature.

26. The method of claim 17, further comprising preventing activation of the pump when a sensor senses a specific circumstance.

27. The method of claim 17, further comprising activating the pump when a sensor senses a specific circumstance.

28. The method of claim 17, further comprising communicating information related to a pump function to an external source.

29. The method of claim 17, further comprising programming of a pump function from an external source.

30. The method of claim 17, wherein the first body cavity comprises a peritoneal cavity.

31. The method of claim 30, wherein the second body cavity comprises a vasculature.

32. The method of claim 30, wherein the second body cavity comprises a bladder.
