1. A molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) compound comprising:

  • a) a polymer, electrostatically imprinted with a phosphate, comprising at least one monomer exhibiting an affinity for phosphate ions, phosphate containing molecules, or a combination of both, at least one cross-linking agent for structurally supporting the at least one monomer, and a plurality of binding sites for binding to phosphate ions, phosphate containing molecules, or a combination of both, wherein the binding sites are accessible by pores;

    or b) a polymer, electrostatically imprinted with a phosphate, comprising at least one monomer exhibiting an affinity for phosphate ions, phosphate containing molecules, or a combination of both, at least one cross-linking agent for structurally supporting the at least one monomer, and a plurality of binding sites for binding to phosphate ions, phosphate containing molecules, or a combination of both, wherein the binding sites are accessible by pores, and a physical spacer.
