Abstract

The present invention relates to sending control or monitoring information between two hardware devices utilizing email. Control information relating to either a first hardware device or a second hardware device is determined. This information is incorporated into an email message. Directing information for directing the control information is incorporated into the email message. Two hardware devices can then operate cooperatively over different remote networks. These networks only need to be compatible in the ability to exchange email for communication to persist between the two hardware devices. The control information and/or the directing information can be encrypted. The control information and/or the directing information can be encoded. In embodiments of the present invention the encoding map is encrypted.

Claims

1. A method of monitoring over a network a monitored device by a monitoring device using Internet electronic mail, the method, comprising:

receiving an electronic mail message;

extracting from a header of the electronic mail message validation information;

determining, based on the validation information, whether the electronic mail message includes device information of the monitored device;

extracting from the electronic mail message the device information, when the determining step determines that the electronic mail message includes the device information; and

storing the extracted device information in a memory.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the validation information comprises at least one of an identification of the monitoring device and a network address of the monitoring device.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein at least one of the validation information and the device information are encrypted, further comprising:

decrypting at least one of the validation information and the device information.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein at least one of the validation information and the device information is encoded.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein a map describing the encoding is encrypted.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the validation information is included in the header of the email message.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein the validation information is included in at least one of the date field, subject field, and comment field of the header.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the device information comprises information related to the configuration of the monitored device.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the device information comprises information related to a status of the monitored device.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the device information comprises instructions for the monitoring device.

26. The method of claim 1, wherein the validation information is encrypted and included in a comment field of the header of the electronic mail message.

12. A monitoring device for monitoring over a network a monitored device using Internet electronic mail, the monitoring device configured to:

receive an electronic mail message;

extract from a header of the electronic mail message validation information;

determine, based on the validation information, whether the electronic mail message includes device information of the monitored device;

extract from the electronic message the device information, when the monitoring device determines that the electronic mail message includes the device information; and

store the extracted device information in a memory.

13. The device of claim 12, wherein the validation information comprises at least one of an identification of the monitoring device and a network address of the monitoring device.

15. The device of claim 12, wherein at least one of the device information and the validation information are encrypted, wherein the monitoring device is configured to:

decrypt at least one of the validation information and the device information.

16. The device of claim 15, wherein at least one of the device information and the validation information is encoded.

17. The device of claim 16, wherein a map describing the encoding is encrypted.

18. The device of claim 12, wherein the validation information is included in the header of the email message.

19. The device of claim 18, wherein the validation information is included in at least one of the date field, subject field, and comment field of the header.

20. The device of claim 12, wherein the device information comprises information related to the configuration of either the monitoring device or the monitored device.

21. The device of claim 12, wherein the device information comprises information related to a status of either the monitoring device or the monitored device.

22. The device of claim 12, wherein the device information comprises instructions for the monitoring device.

27. The monitoring device of claim 12, further configured to extract the validation information from a comment field of the header of the electronic mail message, wherein the validation information is encrypted.

23. A monitoring device for monitoring over a network a monitored device using Internet electronic mail, the monitoring device comprising:

means for receiving an electronic mail message;

means for extracting from a header of the electronic mail message validation information;

means for determining, based on the validation information, whether the electronic mail message includes device information of the monitored device;

means for extracting from the electronic message the device information, when the means for determining determines that the electronic mail message includes the device information; and

means for storing the extracted device information in a memory.

24. A computer program product embodied on one or more storage media, the computer program product causing a computer to perform the steps of:

receiving an electronic mail message;

extracting from a header of the electronic mail message validation information;

determining, based on the validation information, whether the electronic mail message includes device information of the monitored device;

extracting from the electronic message the device information, when the determining step determines that the electronic mail message includes the device information; and

storing the extracted device information in a memory.
