Abstract

A method and apparatus for managing use of protected content by providing a specific user interface to an application program used to render the content. The method includes identifying a user interface description associated with content, building a specific user interface based on the user interface description, and replacing the standard user interface of an application program used to render the content with the specific user interface. The specific user interface can be unique to the user, unique to a Web site, or otherwise customized.

Claims

1. A method for managing use of protected content by providing a specific user interface to an application program used to render the content, said method comprising:

identifying a user interface description associated with content;

building a specific user interface based on the user interface description; and

replacing the standard user interface of an application program used to render the content with the specific user interface.

2. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein said step of identifying comprises identifying a reference to the user interface description contained in the content.

3. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein said step of building comprises executing a software component referenced by the content in accordance with the user interface description.

4. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein the content is protected with usage rights associated with the content.

5. A method as recited in claim 4, wherein the usage rights specify a manner of use of the content.

6. A method as recited in claim 5, wherein the usage rights further specify conditions that must be satisfied to exercise the manner of use.

7. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein the application program is a Web browser.

8. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein said specific user interface is specific to the content.

9. A method as recited in claim 4, wherein said specific user interface is based on the usage rights.

10. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein said specific user interface is specific to the supplier of the content.

11. A method as recited in claim 4, wherein said specific user interface presents a choice of manners of use specified by the usage rights.

12. A method as recited in claim 11, wherein said specific user interface presents a choice of conditions that must be satisfied to exercise a manner of use.

13. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein said specific user interface comprises a tool bar displayed by the application program.

14. A method as recited in claim 3, wherein the software component is a Java applet.

15. A method as recited in claim 3, wherein the software component is an ActiveX control.

16. A method as recited in claim 3, wherein the software component is executed in response to rendering of the content by the application program.

28. A system as recited in claim 11, wherein said specific user interface presents a choice of conditions that must be satisfied to exercise a manner of use.

17. A system for managing use of content by providing a specific user interface to an application program used to render the content on a user device, said system comprising:

means for identifying a user interface description associated with content;

means for building a specific user interface based on the user interface description; and

means for replacing the standard user interface of an application program used to render the content with the specific user interface.

18. A system as recited in claim 17, wherein said means for identifying comprises means for identifying a reference to the user interface description contained in the content.

19. A system as recited in claim 17, wherein said means for building comprises means for executing a software component referenced by the content in accordance with the user interface description.

20. A system as recited in claim 17, wherein the content is protected with usage rights associated with the content.

21. A system as recited in claim 20 wherein the usage rights specify a manner of use of the content.

22. A system as recited in claim 21, wherein the usage rights further specify conditions that must be satisfied to exercise the manner of use.

23. A system as recited in claim 17, wherein the application program is a Web browser.

24. A system as recited in claim 17, wherein said specific user interface is specific to the content.

25. A system as recited in claim 20, wherein said specific user interface is based on the usage rights.

26. A system as recited in claim 17, wherein said specific user interface is specific to the supplier of the content.

27. A system as recited in claim 20, wherein said specific user interface presents a choice of manners of use specified by the usage rights.

29. A system as recited in claim 17, wherein said specific user interface comprises a tool bar displayed by the application program.

30. A system as recited in claim 19, wherein the software component is a Java applet.

31. A system as recited in claim 19, wherein the software component is an ActiveX control.

32. A system as recited in claim 19, wherein the software component is executed in response to rendering of the content by the application program.
