Abstract

A system for transmitting short messages between mobile communication systems includes a first mobile communication system which is based on a first mobile communication standard, a first short message service centre connected to the first mobile communication system, a second mobile communication system based on a second mobile communication standard, a second short message service centre connected to the second mobile communication system, a home location register connected to the second mobile communication system, a mobile services switching centre connected to the second mobile communication system, and a gateway for communications with and between the first and second mobile communication system. In a method implementing this functionality a routing component sends to the gateway a routing data query addressed to a predetermined numerical space. The short message is transmitted to the gateway, based on the address received in response to the routing data query, for further transmission of the short message to the second mobile communication system.

10. A first mobile communication system based at least in part on a first mobile communication standard comprising:

a first short message service centre;

a routing component able to initiate a routing data query from the first short message service centre in connection with a short message received by the first short message service centre from a user of the first mobile communication system, wherein the received short message is transmitted, based at least in part on a response to the routing data query received by the first short message service centre, to a second mobile communication system of an intended recipient of the short message; and

a pointer able to address the routing data query directed by the user to a predetermined numerical address space to a gateway to communicate with the first and second mobile communication systems.

11. The mobile communication system of claim 10, wherein the first short message service centre is able to receive a query returner from the gateway including an address of the gateway in response to the routing data query.

12. The mobile communication system of claim 11, wherein the first short message service centre is able to transmit the received short message to the gateway based at least in part on the received query returner from the gateway.

13. An apparatus comprising:

a gateway to communicate between a first and a second mobile communication system, wherein the gateway is able to receive a routing component able to initiate a routing data query from the first short message service centre in connection with a short message received by the first short message service centre from a user of the first mobile communication system, and the gateway including a query returner able to return from the gateway to the first short message service centre, in response to the routing data query, an address of the gateway.

14. The mobile communication system of claim 13, wherein the gateway is able to receive a pointer able to address the routing data query directed by the user to a predetermined numerical address space to the gateway.

15. The mobile communication system of claim 14, wherein the gateway is able to receive the short message from the first short message service centre, based at least in part on the received query returner from the gateway.

The mobile communication system of claim 13, wherein the gateway comprises a transformer in the gateway able to transform at least one or more of routing data queries, short messages, or acknowledgements of transmission, or combinations thereof from a first mobile communication standard received by the gateway to a second mobile communication standard retransmitted from the gateway.

17. The mobile communication system of claim 13, wherein the gateway comprises a database able to store information to identify short messaging transactions.

18. A telecommunication system comprising:

a routing component able to initiate a routing data query from a first short message service centre in connection with a short message received by the first short message service centre from a user of a first mobile communication system, and the received short message is transmitted, based at least in part on a response to the routing data query received by the first short message service centre, to a second mobile communication system of an intended recipient of the short message;

a pointer able to address the routing data query directed by the user to a predetermined numerical address space to a gateway; and

a query returner able to return from the gateway to the first short message service centre, in response to the routing data query, an address of the gateway.

The telecommunication system of claim 18, wherein the gateway comprises a transformer in the gateway able to transform at least one or more of routing data queries, short messages, or acknowledgements of transmission, or combinations thereof from a first mobile communication standard received by the gateway to a second mobile communication standard retransmitted from the gateway.

20. The telecommunication system of claim 18, wherein the gateway comprises a database able to store information to identify short messaging transactions.

21. An apparatus to transmit short messages between mobile communication systems in a telecommunication system comprising:

means for receiving at a first short message service centre, from a user of a first mobile communication system, a short message directed to a predetermined numerical address space;

means for initiating, at the first short message service centre, a routing data query of the received short message by sending the routing data query to a gateway; and

means for transmitting the received short message from the first short message service centre by routing the received short message from the first short message service centre to the gateway to further transmit of the message from the gateway to a second mobile communication system.

22. The apparatus of claim 21, further comprising means for returning, from the gateway to the first short message service centre in response to the routing data query, an address of the gateway.

23. A method to transmit short messages between mobile communication systems in a telecommunication system comprising:

receiving at a first short message service centre, from a user of a first mobile communication system, a short message directed to a predetermined numerical address space;

returning, from a gateway to the first short message service centre an address of the gateway; and

transmitting the received short message from the first short message service centre by routing the received short message from the first short message service centre to the gateway to further transmit of the message from the gateway to a second mobile communication system.

The method of claim 23, further comprising initiating, at the first short message service centre, a routing data query of the received short message by sending the routing data query to a gateway wherein the address of the gateway is returned to the first short message service centre in response to the routing data query.

25. The method of claim 23, wherein the predetermined numerical address space comprises at least one number of a second short message service centre.

26. The method of claim 24, further comprising:

transforming the routed short message received by the gateway to conform to a second mobile communication standard;

transmitting the transformed short message from the gateway to a second short message service centre;

transmitting, from the second short message service centre to the gateway upon receipt of the transformed short message by the second short message service centre, an acknowledgement of receipt of the transformed short message;

transforming, at the gateway, the acknowledgement of receipt received from the second short message service centre to conform to a first mobile communication standard; and

transmitting the transformed acknowledgement from the gateway to the first short message service centre.

27. The method of claim 23, further comprising:

transforming, at the gateway, the routing data query sent to the gateway into a transformed routing data query conforming to a second mobile communication standard;

transmitting the transformed routing data query from the gateway to a home location register;

receiving the transformed routing data query at the home location register; and

returning, from the home location register to the gateway in response to the received transformed routing data query, an address of a mobile services switching centre in which an intended recipient of the short message is located.

28. The method of claim 27, further comprising:

transforming, at the gateway, the returned address to conform to a first mobile communication standard;

sending the transformed address from the gateway to the first short message service centre;

transforming, at the gateway, the routed short message received by the gateway to conform to the second mobile communication standard; and

sending the transformed short message from the gateway to the mobile services switching centre.

29. The method of claim 28, further comprising:

transmitting, from a second short message service centre to the gateway upon receipt of the transformed short message by the second short message service centre, an acknowledgement of receipt of the transformed short message; and

transforming, at the gateway, the acknowledgement of receipt received from the second short message service centre to conform to the first mobile communication standard.

30. The method of claim 23, further comprising maintaining in the gateway a temporary database to store information to identify short messaging transactions.

31. The method of claim 30, wherein transforming the routed short message received by the gateway further comprises transforming the routed short message from a Mobile-Terminating format to a Mobile-Originated format.
