Abstract

Various embodiments for remote presentation of an interface of a computing device, such as a PC, are described herein. In particular, in various illustrated embodiments, a local device such as a Digital Media Adapter (DMA), mobile device, cellular telephone, etc. may be used to receive input from a remote control, where the local device provides human perceptible feedback, such as a sound, visual response, etc., responsive to use of the remote control. In some embodiments, the local device may contain a memory or cache for locally storing particular feedback data for human perceptible feedback. In various embodiments, a communication protocol is provided for storing, triggering, deleting, etc. feedback data in the memory or cache.

Claims

1. A system communicatively coupled with a first computing device having a first interface and a first feedback data corresponding to human perceptible feedback to present to a remote user, the system comprising:

a control operable by the remote user;

a digital media adapter configured to present the interface, and configured to present the human perceptible feedback responsive to an operation of the control; and

a first memory communicatively coupled with the digital media adapter, the first memory configured to store at least the feedback data.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the first memory is disposed within the digital media adapter.

3. The system of claim 1, wherein the first memory includes a data structure comprising:

a first portion for storing an identifier for the feedback data; and

a second portion for storing the feedback data.

4. The system of claim 1, further comprising:

a computing second device having a second interface and a second feedback data corresponding to human perceptible feedback to present to the remote user, wherein the memory is further configured to store the second feedback data.

5. The system of claim 1, further comprising:

a second memory communicatively coupled with the digital media adapter, the second memory configured to persistently store a second feedback data corresponding to human perceptible feedback.

6. The system of claim 1, further comprising:

a logic arrangement communicatively coupled with at least the digital media adapter and the first memory, the logic arrangement configured to perform storing feedback data in the first memory.

7. The system of claim 6, wherein the logic arrangement is further configured to persistently store feedback data in the first memory.

8. The system of claim 1, in which the control operable by the remote user includes a key, the system further comprising:

a logic arrangement communicatively coupled with at least the digital media adapter and the first memory, the logic arrangement configured to bind activation of feedback data stored in the first memory with the key of the control.

9. The system of claim 1, further comprising a logic arrangement communicatively coupled with at least the digital media adapter and the first memory, the logic arrangement configured to perform selected ones of:

storing feedback data in the first memory;

triggering feedback data stored in the first memory; and

clearing feedback data out of the first memory.

14. The method of claim 10, system of claim 1, wherein said instructing the device includes instructing the device to perform storing feedback data in the first memory.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein said storing feedback data is persistent.

10. A method of monitoring for attachment to a network of a device for remoting actions of a computing device, the method comprising:

monitoring the network for an announcement corresponding to attachment of the device to the network;

querying the device to determine whether the device supports a feedback cache for storing feedback data corresponding to human perceptible responses to be provided by the device on behalf of the computing device;

determining characteristics of the feedback cache; and

instructing the device to modify the feedback cache based at least in part on the determined characteristics.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein the device comprises a Device Media Adapter.

12. The method of claim 10, further comprising:

determining, based on said characteristics, the feedback cache has insufficient capacity to store a feedback data for a human perceptible response;

wherein said instructing the device to modify the feedback cache includes instructing the device to delete data from the feedback cache sufficient to provide storage for the feedback data.

13. The method of claim 10, wherein said instructing the device includes instructing the device to perform selected ones of:

storing feedback data in the first memory;

triggering feedback data stored in the first memory; and

clearing feedback data out of the first memory.

16. The method of claim 10, further comprising:

instructing the device to bind a feedback data corresponding to a human perceptible response with activation of a button of a remote control communicatively coupled with said attached device.

17. A method for presenting an interface of a remote computing device to a user, the method comprising:

receiving data from a remote control identifying at least an activation by the user of a feature of the remote control;

providing a memory for storing feedback data corresponding to human perceptible feedback for presentation to the user, wherein feedback data stored in the memory may be associated with at least the feature of the remote control; and

determining whether the memory contains feedback data associated with said activated feature of the remote control, and if so, then presenting said associated feedback data.

18. The method of claim 17, further comprising:

determining the memory does not contain feedback data associated with said activated feature of the remote control;

providing to the remote computing device an identification of said activated feature; and

receiving from the remote computing device a request to present a particular feedback data stored in the memory.

19. The method of claim 17, wherein the method is disposed within a Digital Media Adapter.

20. The method of claim 17, further comprising:

receiving a request from the remote computing device to modify the memory storing feedback data, wherein the requested modification is a selected on of;

delete feedback data from the memory;

store feedback data in the memory;

trigger feedback data stored in the memory; and

clear feedback data out of the first memory.

21. An article comprising a machine accessible having associated data for monitoring for attachment to a network of a device for remoting actions of a computing device, said data, which when accessed, results in:

monitoring the network for an announcement corresponding to attachment of the device to the network;

querying the device to determine whether the device supports a feedback cache for storing feedback data corresponding to human perceptible responses to be provided by the device on behalf of the computing device;

determining characteristics of the feedback cache; and

instructing the device to modify the feedback cache based at least in part on the determined characteristics.

23. The article of claim 21, wherein the associated data further includes data, which when accessed, results in the device performing selected ones of:

storing feedback data in the first memory;

triggering feedback data stored in the first memory; and

clearing feedback data out of the first memory.

24. The article of claim 21, wherein the associated data further includes data, which when accessed, results in the device performing selected ones of:

instructing the device to bind a feedback data corresponding to a human perceptible response with activation of a button of a remote control communicatively coupled with said attached device.

22. The article of claim 22, wherein the associated data further includes data, which when accessed, results in:

determining, based on said characteristics, the feedback cache has insufficient capacity to store a feedback data for a human perceptible response;

wherein said data for said instructing the device to modify the feedback cache further includes data which when accessed results in instructing the device to delete data from the feedback cache sufficient to provide storage for the feedback data.

25. An article comprising a machine accessible having associated data for presenting an interface of a remote computing device to a user, said data, which when accessed, results in:

receiving data from a remote control identifying at least an activation by the user of a feature of the remote control;

providing a memory for storing feedback data corresponding to human perceptible feedback for presentation to the user, wherein feedback data stored in the memory may be associated with at least the feature of the remote control; and

determining whether the memory contains feedback data associated with said activated feature of the remote control, and if so, then presenting said associated feedback data.

26. The article of claim 25, wherein the associated data further includes data, which when accessed, results in:

determining the memory does not contain feedback data associated with said activated feature of the remote control;

providing to the remote computing device an identification of said activated feature; and

receiving from the remote computing device a request to present a particular feedback data stored in the memory.

27. The article of claim 25, wherein the associated data further includes data, which when accessed, results in:

receiving a request from the remote computing device to modify the memory storing feedback data, wherein the requested modification is a selected on of;

delete feedback data from the memory;

store feedback data in the memory;

trigger feedback data stored in the memory; and

clear feedback data out of the first memory.
