Abstract

A method and system for managing a battery system for a vehicle utilizes a hierarchy to disconnect electrical loads from the battery system. One embodiment of the method includes receiving an input signal representative of a condition of one of the components of one of the systems provided in a vehicle. The method also includes comparing the input signal with at least one parameter to determine whether the condition indicates that at least one of the plurality of electrical loads should be disconnected from the battery. The method also includes disconnecting at least one of the plurality of electrical loads from the at least one battery according to a predetermined hierarchy if the input signal when compared to the parameter indicates that at least one of the plurality of electrical loads should be disconnected from the at least one battery.

Claims

1. A method for managing a battery system for a vehicle having components and systems that includes at least one battery and that is configured to provide power to a plurality of electrical loads comprising:

receiving an input signal representative of a condition of one of the components of one of the systems provided in a vehicle;

comparing the input signal with at least one parameter to determine whether the condition indicates that at least one of the plurality of electrical loads should be disconnected from the at least one battery; and

disconnecting at least one of the plurality of electrical loads from the at least one battery according to a predetermined hierarchy if the input signal when compared to the parameter indicates that at least one of the plurality of electrical loads should be disconnected from the at least one battery.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of disconnecting at least one of the plurality of electrical loads comprises disconnecting a plurality of electrical loads.

3. The method of claim 2 wherein the step of disconnecting a plurality of electrical loads according to a predetermined hierarchy comprises disconnecting electrical loads designated as nonessential before disconnecting electrical loads designated as essential.

4. The method of claim 3 wherein the loads designated as nonessential are selected from an adapter outlet, an entertainment system, a seating positioning device, a climate control system, and an interior lighting system.

5. The method of claim 3 wherein the loads designated as essential are selected from a vehicle starter, a fuel pump, a lighting system, a steering system, a headlight system, a window defroster, and a windshield wiper system.

6. The method of claim 1 further comprising providing a notification if the input signal when compared to the parameter indicates that at least one of the plurality of electrical loads should be disconnected from the at least one battery.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein the input signal is representative of a state of charge of a battery and wherein the step of disconnecting at least one of the plurality of electrical loads comprises disconnecting the at least one electrical load when the state of charge of the battery is less than a predetermined value.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein the input signal is representative of the use of the vehicle and wherein the step of disconnecting at least one of the plurality of electrical loads comprises disconnecting the at least one electrical load when the use of the vehicle is determined to be unauthorized.

9. The method of claim 8 further comprising providing a notification to a vehicle assistance provider, the notification selected from a phone call, a text message, and an electronic mail message.

10. The method of claim 8 further comprising disabling the engine of the vehicle to prevent an unauthorized start of the engine when it is determined that the engine is off.

11. The method of claim 8 wherein the input signal is representative of at least one of the location of the vehicle, the speed of the vehicle, and the time of use of the vehicle.

The method of claim 1 wherein the input signal is representative of a vehicle collision and wherein the step of disconnecting at least one of the plurality of electrical loads comprises disconnecting the at least one electrical load when the vehicle is determined to have been involved in a collision.

13. The method of claim 1 wherein the input signal is representative of the whether the engine of the vehicle is off and wherein the step of disconnecting at least one of the plurality of electrical loads comprises disconnecting the at least one electrical load when the engine of the vehicle is determined to be off.

14. The method of claim 1 wherein the input signal is representative of a failure of an electrical load and wherein the step of disconnecting at least one of the plurality of electrical loads comprises disconnecting the electrical load that has failed.

15. The method of claim 1 further comprising providing an output signal to charge the at least one battery when the input signal is representative of a low battery charge condition.

16. The method of claim 1 further comprising determining whether the vehicle is in use before disconnecting at least one of the plurality of electrical loads and wherein the step of disconnecting at least one of the plurality of electrical loads is performed only when the vehicle is determined not to be in use.

17. The method of claim 16 wherein the step of determining whether the vehicle is in use comprises receiving an input signal representative of a ripple voltage.

18. The method of claim 16 wherein the step of determining whether the vehicle is in use comprises receiving an input signal from a sensor associated with at least one of a tachometer, an accelerometer, a global positioning system, a fuel pump, a vehicle ignition, and a vehicle lighting system.

19. The method of claim 1 further comprising disconnecting a plurality of electrical loads to maintain a pre-determined state of charge of the at least one battery.

20. A system for managing a battery system including at least one battery provided in a vehicle having a plurality of systems and components and configured to provide power to a plurality of electrical loads comprising:

a control program for comparing an input signal representative of a condition of a component of a system provided in a vehicle to a parameter for the component and for providing an output signal to disconnect at least one of the plurality of electrical loads from the at least one battery according to a predetermined hierarchy if the input signal when compared to the parameter indicates that at least one of the plurality of electrical loads should be disconnected from the at least one battery.

21. The system of claim 20 further comprising a device for providing the input signal.

22. The system of claim 21 wherein the device comprises at least one sensor.

23. The system of claim 22 wherein the sensor is associated with at least one of a tachometer, an accelerometer, a global positioning system, and a speedometer.

24. The system of claim 21 wherein the device comprises a network.

25. The system of claim 24 wherein the device comprises a vehicle communication system.

26. The system of claim 20 further comprising a switch for disconnecting the at least one electrical load from the at least one battery.

27. The system of claim 20 wherein the battery system includes a low voltage battery for low voltage electrical loads and a high voltage battery for high voltage electrical loads.

28. The system of claim 20 wherein the control program is configured to provide an output signal to provide a charging current to the battery system to maintain a predetermined state of charge of the battery system.

29. The system of claim 20 wherein the control program is configured to provide at least one of an audible signal and a visual signal if the input signal when compared to the parameter indicates that at least one of the plurality of electrical loads should be disconnected from the at least one battery.

30. The system of claim 20 wherein the control program is configured to disconnect loads designated as nonessential before disconnecting loads designated a essential.

31. A control system for a vehicle comprising:

a battery system comprising at least one battery;

a plurality of electrical loads configured to receive power from the battery system;

a switch for selectively electrically connecting at least one of the plurality of electrical loads to the battery system; and

a device for providing an output signal to the switch to disconnect the at least one of the plurality of electrical loads from the battery system according to a predetermined hierarchy;

wherein the device is configured to receive an input signal representative of a condition of a component of the vehicle and to compare the input signal to a parameter and to provide the output signal if the input signal when compared to the parameter indicates that the at least one of the plurality of electrical loads should be disconnected from the battery system.

32. The control system of claim 31 wherein the battery system comprises a low voltage battery for powering low voltage loads.

33. The control system of claim 32 wherein the battery system further comprises a high voltage battery for powering high voltage loads.

34. The control system of claim 31 wherein the plurality of electrical loads include loads designated as essential and loads designated as nonessential.

35. The control system of claim 34 wherein the device is configured to provide at least one output signal to disconnect a plurality of loads designated as nonessential according to a predetermined hierarchy.

36. The control system of claim 35 wherein the device is configured to provide at least one output signal to disconnect a plurality of loads designated as essential according to a predetermined hierarchy after all of the loads designated as nonessential are disconnected.

37. The control system of claim 31 wherein the device is a controller configured to run a control program.

38. The control system of claim 31 wherein the input signal is representative of a state of charge of a battery and the control program provides an output signal to disconnect at least one of the plurality of electrical loads when the state of charge of the battery is less than a predetermined value.

39. The control system of claim 31 wherein the input signal is representative of the use of the vehicle and the control program provides an output signal to disconnect at least one of the plurality of electrical loads when the use of the vehicle is determined to be unauthorized.

40. The control system of claim 31 wherein the input signal is representative of a vehicle collision and the control program provides an output signal to disconnect at least one of the plurality of electrical loads when the vehicle is determined to have been involved in a collision.

41. The control system of claim 31 wherein the input signal is representative of the whether the engine of the vehicle is off and the control program provides an output signal to disconnect at least one of the plurality of electrical loads when the engine of the vehicle is determined to be off.

42. The control system of claim 31 wherein the input signal is representative of a failure of an electrical load and the control program provides an output signal to disconnect the load that has failed.
