Abstract

The present invention provides an organic electroluminescent display device and a method of preparing the same. The organic electroluminescent display device may include a first electrode formed on a substrate. A second electrode may be formed so as to be insulated from the first electrode. One or more organic layers may be interposed between the first electrode and the second electrode and include at least an emission layer. One layer or a plurality of layers may be formed on the second electrode and comprise a material or materials having a refractive index higher than a refractive index used to form a material that comprise the second electrode. An organic electroluminescent display device fabricated in this matter has improved efficiency of light extraction. Such a device also resists infiltration of moisture and oxygen to a luminous part of the device that includes the first electrode, the second electrode, and the organic layer.

Claims

1. An organic electroluminescent display device, comprising:

a first electrode provided on a substrate;

a second electrode formed so as to be insulated from the first electrode;

one or more organic layers interposed between the first electrode and the second electrode and including at least an emission layer; and

one layer or a plurality of layers formed on the second electrode and composed of a material or materials having a refractive index higher than a refractive index of a material used to form the second electrode.

2. The organic electroluminescent display device of claim 1, wherein the plurality of layers is laminated such that the refractive index of the material of each of the layers sequentially increases in a direction away from the second electrode.

The organic electroluminescent display device of claim 1, wherein the material having a refractive index higher than the refractive index of the material used to form the second electrode has a refractive index 0.01 to 3.0 times higher than the refractive index of the material used to form the second electrode.

4. An organic electroluminescent display device, comprising:

a first electrode provided on a substrate;

a second electrode formed so as to be insulated from the first electrode;

one or more organic layers interposed between the first electrode and the second electrode and including at least an emission layer; and

a protective layer formed on the second electrode,

wherein a buffering layer is interposed between the second electrode and the protective layer.

5. The organic electroluminescent display device of claim 4, wherein the thickness of the buffering layer is about 300 Å

to about 1000 Å

.

6. The organic electroluminescent display device of claim 4, wherein the buffering layer comprises at least one material selected from the group consisting of metal oxides and metal nitrides.

7. The organic electroluminescent display device of claim 4, wherein the buffering layer has a refractive index higher than a refractive index of a material used to form the second electrode but lower than a refractive index of a material used to form the protective layer.

8. The organic electroluminescent display device of claim 4, wherein the buffering layer comprises a material with an optical band gap of about 3.0 eV to about 6.0 eV.

9. The organic electroluminescent display device of claim 4, wherein a surface roughness (rms) of the protective layer is about 5 Å

to about 50 Å

.

10. The organic electroluminescent display device of claim 4, wherein the protective layer comprises at least one material selected from the group consisting of metal oxides and metal nitrides.

11. The organic electroluminescent display device of claim 10, wherein the protective layer further includes a network former.

12. The organic electroluminescent display device of claim 11, wherein the network former comprises at least one element selected from the group consisting of Li, Na, K, Ca, Sn, Rb, Cs, Ba, Pb, Be, Mg, Ce, and Nb.

13. A method of preparing an organic electroluminescent display device, the method comprising:

forming a first electrode on a substrate part;

forming one or more organic layers including at least an emission layer on the first electrode;

forming a second electrode on the organic layer; and

forming one layer or a plurality of layers comprising a material or materials having a refractive index higher than a refractive index of a material used to form the second electrode on the second electrode.

The method of claim 13, wherein forming the plurality of layers of materials having the refractive index higher than the refractive index of a material used to form the second electrode includes laminating the layers such that the refractive index of the material of each of the layers sequentially increases in a direction away from the second electrode.

15. The method of claim 13, wherein the one layer or at least one layer of the plurality of layers comprising a material or materials having a refractive index higher than a refractive index of a material used to form the second electrode is a protective layer or a buffering layer.

16. The method of claim 13, wherein the one layer or at least one layer of the plurality of layers comprising a material or materials having a refractive index higher than a refractive index of a material used to form the second electrode is formed using ion beam assisted deposition (IBAD) that includes an evaporation source and an ion beam source.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein ions emitted from the ion beam source are ions of at least one atom selected from the group consisting of inert gases.

18. The method of claim 16, wherein an energy of the ion beam source is about 50 eV to about 200 eV.

19. The method of claim 16, wherein a ratio of a number of ions emitted from the ion beam source to a number of particles emitted from the evaporation source is in a range of about 1:

1 to about 0.9;
