Abstract

Tooth-imparting whiteness to fluids comprising a particulate whiteness-imparting particles such as hydroxyapatite and an organosiloxane polymer are disclosed. Methods of use of the fluids are also disclosed.

Claims

1. A tooth-coating fluid comprising white particles and at least one organosiloxane polymer.

2. A tooth-coating fluid according to claim 1, wherein the organosiloxane polymer is a hydrophilic organosiloxane polymer having the formula

wherein:

R₁ and R₂ are independently, organic radicals selected from the group consisting of alkyl, aryl, and alkoxy radicals comprising from 1 to about 40 carbons;

n is an integer from 1 to about 200; and

X and Z are organic substituents, one or both of which confer hydrophilicity to the polymer.

3. A tooth-coating fluid according to claim 2, wherein the polymer is a copolymer comprising subunits of dimethicone copolyol and a polyoxyalkylene ether.

4. A tooth-coating fluid according to claim 3, wherein the polymer is a dimethicone/acrylate copolymer.

5. A tooth-coating fluid according to claim 4, wherein the copolymer is a PEG/PPG conjugate of a dimethicone/acrylate copolymer.

6. A tooth-coating fluid according to claim 5, wherein the dimethicone/acrylate copolymer comprises the polymerized reaction product of t-butyl acrylate, methacrylic acid and dimethicone copolyol.

7. A tooth-coating fluid according to claim 2, wherein the polymer has a Chemical Abstracts Service Registry Number of 248935-80-0.

8. A tooth-coating fluid according to claim 1, wherein the organosiloxane polymer is a dimethicone copolyol polymer selected from the group consisting of (R¹⁰)₃—

, R^c is a terminating radical selected from hydrogen, an alkyl group comprising one to six carbon atoms, an ester group selected from an acyl group and an aryl group, m is an integer from two to about eight;

p and s are each positive integers such that the oxyalkylene segment —

has a molecular weight in the range of 200 to 5,000, wherein the segment comprises from about fifty up to one hundred mole percent of oxyethylene units —

, x is an integer from about 8 to about 400, and y is an integer from about 2 up to about 40, and (R¹⁰)₃—

p is an integer from about 6 to about 16, x is an integer from about 6 to about 100, and y is an integer from 1 up to about 20.

A tooth-coating fluid according to claim 1, wherein the white particles are comprised of a material selected from the group consisting of a calcium phosphate, a titanium oxide, an aluminum oxide, a tin oxide, a calcium oxide, a magnesium oxide, a polyethylene, a polypropylene, a ethylene/propylene copolymer, a polytetrafluoroethylene, a polyhexafluoropropene and combinations thereof.

10. A tooth-coating fluid according to claim 9, wherein the calcium phosphate is hydroxyapatite.

11. A tooth-coating fluid according to claim 1, wherein the white particles have an average diameter of from at least about 0.5 microns up to about 500 microns.

12. A tooth-coating fluid according to claim 1, wherein the white particles have an average diameter of from at least about 10 microns up to about 100 microns.

13. A tooth-coating fluid according to claim 1, wherein the white particles have an average diameter of from at least about 20 microns up to about 50 microns.

14. A method of imparting whiteness to a tooth in a mammal, the method comprising applying to the tooth a whiteness-imparting amount of a fluid comprising a white particles and at least one organosiloxane polymer.

15. A method of imparting whiteness to a tooth according to claim 14, wherein the organosiloxane polymer is a hydrophilic organosiloxane polymer having the formula

wherein:

R₁ and R₂ are independently, organic radicals selected from the group consisting of alkyl, aryl, and alkoxy radicals comprising from 1 to about 40 carbons;

n is an integer from 1 to about 200; and

X and Z are organic substituents, one or both of which confer hydrophilicity to the polymer.

16. A method of imparting whiteness to a tooth according to claim 14, wherein the organosiloxane polymer has a Chemical Abstracts Service Registry Number of 248935-80-0.

17. A method of imparting whiteness to a tooth according to claim 14, wherein the organosiloxane polymer is a dimethicone copolyol polymer selected from the group consisting of (R¹⁰)₃—

(C₃H₆O)_s—

A method of imparting whiteness to a tooth according to claim 14, wherein the white particles are comprised of a material selected from the group consisting of a calcium phosphate, a titanium oxide, an aluminum oxide, a tin oxide, a calcium oxide, a magnesium oxide, a polyethylene, a polypropylene, a ethylene/propylene copolymer, a polytetrafluoroethylene, a polyhexafluoropropene and combinations thereof.

19. A method of imparting whiteness to a tooth according to claim 18, wherein the calcium phosphate particles are hydroxyapatite particles.

20. A method of imparting whiteness to a tooth according to claim 14, wherein the white particles have an average diameter of from at least about 0.5 microns up to about 500 microns.
