Abstract

A lead includes a conductor having a distal end and a proximal end and a resonant circuit connected to the conductor. The resonant circuit has a resonance frequency approximately equal to an excitation signal'"'"'s frequency of a magnetic resonance imaging scanner or a resonance frequency not tuned to an excitation signal'"'"'s frequency of a magnetic resonance imaging scanner so as to reduce the current flow through a tissue area, thereby reducing tissue damage. The resonant circuit may be included in an adapter that provides an electrical bridge between a lead a medical device such as an electrode, sensor, or signal generator. The resonant circuit may also be included directly in the housing of a medical device.

Claims

1. An adapter for a lead, comprising:

a housing having a first connector and a second connector, said first connector providing a mechanical and electrical connection to a lead, said second connector providing a mechanical and electrical connection to a medical device; and

a resonant circuit operatively connected to said first and second connectors;

said resonant circuit having a resonance frequency approximately equal to an excitation signal'"'"'s frequency of a magnetic-resonance imaging scanner.

2. The adapter as claimed in claim 1, wherein said resonant circuit is an inductor connected in parallel with a capacitor.

3. The adapter as claimed in claim 1, wherein said resonant circuit is an inductor connected in parallel with a capacitor and a resistor, said resistor and capacitor being connected in series.

4. The adapter as claimed in claim 1, wherein said resonant circuit has a resonance frequency of about 64 MHz.

5. The adapter as claimed in claim 1, further comprising:

a second resonant circuit operatively connected to said resonant circuit;

said second resonant circuit having a resonance frequency approximately equal to an excitation signal'"'"'s frequency of a second magnetic-resonance imaging scanner.

6. The adapter as claimed in claim 5, wherein said second resonant circuit is an inductor connected in parallel with a capacitor.

7. The adapter as claimed in claim 5, wherein said second resonant circuit is an inductor connected in parallel with a capacitor and a resistor, said resistor and capacitor being connected in series.

8. The adapter as claimed in claim 5, wherein said second resonant circuit has a resonance frequency of about 128 MHz.

9. The adapter as claimed in claim 1, further comprising:

a heat receiving mass;

said heat receiving mass being located adjacent to said resonant circuit;

said heat receiving mass dissipating the heat generated by said resonant circuit.

10. The adapter as claimed in claim 1, further comprising:

a heat dissipating structure;

said heat dissipating structure being located adjacent to said resonant circuit;

said heat dissipating structure dissipating the heat generated by said resonant circuit.

11. The adapter as claimed in claim 1, wherein said first connector provides a mechanical and electrical connection to a distal end of the lead.

12. The adapter as claimed in claim 1, wherein said first connector provides a mechanical and electrical connection to a proximal end of the lead.

13. The adapter as claimed in claim 1, wherein said first connector provides a mechanical and electrical connection to a distal end of the lead and the medical device is an electrode.

14. The adapter as claimed in claim 1, wherein said first connector provides a mechanical and electrical connection to a distal end of the lead and the medical device is a sensor.

15. The adapter as claimed in claim 1, wherein said first connector provides a mechanical and electrical connection to a proximal end of the lead and the medical device is a defibrillator.

16. The adapter as claimed in claim 1, wherein said first connector provides a mechanical and electrical connection to a proximal end of the lead and the medical device is a pacing device.

17. The adapter as claimed in claim 1, wherein said first connector provides a mechanical and electrical connection to a proximal end of the lead and the medical device is a brain stimulation device.

18. The adapter as claimed in claim 1, wherein said first connector provides a mechanical and electrical connection to a proximal end of the lead and the medical device is a nerve stimulation device.

19. An adapter for a lead, comprising:

a housing having a first connector and a second connector, said first connector providing a mechanical and electrical connection to each conductor of a multi-conductor lead, said second connector providing a mechanical and electrical connection to a medical device; and

a resonant circuit operatively connected to said first and second connectors;

said resonant circuit having a resonance frequency approximately equal to an excitation signal'"'"'s frequency of a magnetic-resonance imaging scanner.

20. The adapter as claimed in claim 19, wherein said resonant circuit is connected to said first and second connectors so as to be in series between a first conductor of a multi-conductor lead and a medical device.

21. The adapter circuit as claimed in claim 19, wherein said resonant circuit is an inductor connected in parallel with a capacitor.

22. The adapter as claimed in claim 19, wherein said resonant circuit is an inductor connected in parallel with a capacitor and a resistor, said resistor and capacitor being connected in series.

23. The adapter as claimed in claim 19, wherein said resonant circuit has a resonance frequency of about 64 MHz.

24. The adapter as claimed in claim 19, further comprising:

a second resonant circuit operatively connected to said resonant circuit;

said second resonant circuit having a resonance frequency approximately equal to an excitation signal'"'"'s frequency of a second magnetic-resonance imaging scanner.

25. The adapter as claimed in claim 24, wherein said second resonant circuit is an inductor connected in parallel with a capacitor.

26. The adapter as claimed in claim 24, wherein said second resonant circuit is an inductor connected in parallel with a capacitor and a resistor, said resistor and capacitor being connected in series.

27. The adapter as claimed in claim 24, wherein said second resonant circuit has a resonance frequency of about 128 MHz.

28. The adapter as claimed in claim 19, further comprising:

a heat receiving mass;

said heat receiving mass being located adjacent to said resonant circuit;

said heat receiving mass dissipating the heat generated by said resonant circuit.

29. The adapter as claimed in claim 19, further comprising:

a heat dissipating structure;

said heat dissipating structure being located adjacent to said resonant circuit;

said heat dissipating structure dissipating the heat generated by said resonant circuit.

30. The adapter as claimed in-claim 19, further comprising:

a third resonant circuit operatively connected to said first and second connectors;

said third resonant circuit being connected to said first and second connectors so as to be in series between a second conductor of a bipolar pacing lead and a medical device.

said third resonant circuit having a resonance frequency approximately equal to an excitation signal'"'"'s frequency of a magnetic-resonance imaging scanner.

31. The adapter as claimed in claim 30, wherein said third resonant circuit is an inductor connected in parallel with a capacitor.

32. The adapter as claimed in claim 30, wherein said third resonant circuit is an inductor connected in parallel with a capacitor and a resistor, said resistor and capacitor being connected in series.

33. The adapter as claimed in claim 30, wherein said third resonant circuit has a resonance frequency of about 64 MHz.

34. The adapter as claimed in claim 30, further comprising:

a fourth resonant circuit operatively connected to said third resonant circuit;

said fourth resonant circuit having a resonance frequency approximately equal to an excitation signal'"'"'s frequency of a second magnetic-resonance imaging scanner.

35. The adapter as claimed in claim 34, wherein said fourth resonant circuit is an inductor connected in parallel with a capacitor.

36. The adapter as claimed in claim 34, wherein said fourth resonant circuit is an inductor connected in parallel with a capacitor and a resistor, said resistor and capacitor being connected in series.

37. The adapter as claimed in claim 34, wherein said fourth resonant circuit has a resonance frequency of about 128 MHz.

38. The adapter as claimed in claim 19, wherein the multi-conductor lead is a bipolar pacing lead.

39. The adapter as claimed in claim 19, wherein the multi-conductor lead is a deep brain stimulator lead.

40. The adapter as claimed in claim 19, wherein the multi-conductor lead is a four conductor deep brain stimulator lead.

41. The adapter as claimed in claim 19, wherein said first connector provides a mechanical and electrical connection to a distal end of the multi-conductor lead.

42. The adapter as claimed in claim 19, wherein said first connector provides a mechanical and electrical connection to a proximal end of the multi-conductor lead.

43. The adapter as claimed in claim 19, wherein said first connector provides a mechanical and electrical connection to a distal end of the multi-conductor lead and the medical device is an electrode.

44. The adapter as claimed in claim 19, wherein said first connector provides a mechanical and electrical connection to a distal end of the multi-conductor lead and the medical device is a sensor.

45. The adapter as claimed in claim 19, wherein said first connector provides a mechanical and electrical connection to a proximal end of the multi-conductor lead and the medical device is a defibrillator.

46. The adapter as claimed in claim 19, wherein said first connector provides a mechanical and electrical connection to a proximal end of the multi-conductor lead and the medical device is a pacing device.

47. The adapter as claimed in claim. 19, wherein said first connector provides a mechanical and electrical connection to a proximal end of the multi-conductor lead and the medical device is a brain stimulation device.

48. The adapter as claimed in claim 19, wherein said first connector provides a mechanical and electrical connection to a proximal end of the multi-conductor lead and the medical device is a nerve stimulation device.

49. An adapter for a lead, comprising:

a housing having a first connector said first connector providing a mechanical and electrical connection to a lead;

a resonant circuit operatively connected to said first connector; and

a medical device operatively connected to said resonant circuit;

said resonant circuit having a resonance frequency approximately equal to an excitation signal'"'"'s frequency of a magnetic-resonance imaging scanner.

50. The adapter as claimed in claim 49, wherein said resonant circuit is an inductor connected in parallel with a capacitor.

51. The adapter as claimed in claim 49, wherein said resonant circuit is an inductor connected in parallel with a capacitor and a resistor, said resistor and capacitor being connected in series.

52. The adapter as claimed in claim 49, wherein said resonant circuit has a resonance frequency of about 64 MHz.

53. The adapter as claimed in claim 49, further comprising:

a second resonant circuit operatively connected to said resonant circuit;

said second resonant circuit having a resonance frequency approximately equal to an excitation signal'"'"'s frequency of a second magnetic-resonance imaging scanner.

54. The adapter as claimed in claim 53, wherein said second resonant circuit is an inductor connected in parallel with a capacitor.

55. The adapter as claimed in claim 53, wherein said second resonant circuit is an inductor connected in parallel with a capacitor and a resistor, said resistor and capacitor being connected in series.

56. The adapter as claimed in claim 53, wherein said second resonant circuit has a resonance frequency of about 128 MHz.

57. The adapter as claimed in claim 49, further comprising:

a heat receiving mass;

said heat receiving mass being located adjacent to said resonant circuit;

said heat receiving mass dissipating the heat generated by said resonant circuit.

58. The adapter as claimed in claim 49, further comprising:

a heat dissipating structure;

said heat dissipating structure being located adjacent to said resonant circuit;

said heat dissipating structure dissipating the heat generated by said resonant circuit.

59. The adapter as claimed in claim 49, wherein said first connector provides a mechanical and electrical connection to-a distal end of the lead.

60. The adapter as claimed in claim 49, wherein said first connector provides a mechanical and electrical connection to a distal end of the lead and the medical device is an electrode.

61. The adapter as claimed in claim 49, wherein said first connector provides a mechanical and electrical connection to a distal end of the lead and the medical device is a sensor.
