Abstract

In a customizable data migration method and system, when a migration program is launched, it queries a system server for entity-level and user-level policies. The migration program then creates a customized interface to the user, where the entity-level and user-level polices are applied with hierarchical priorities. In this manner, flexibility is provided in the data migration process. The end user is allowed to maintain a personality on a given user system and to transfer this personality along with the company specified data. This increases the uptime of the user by reducing the re-customization time when the user is cascaded to a new user system.

Claims

1. A method for providing customizable data migration between user systems, comprising the steps of:

(a) launching a data migration program at a user system;

(b) querying a system server for entity-level and user-level policies; and

(c) creating a customized interface for the data migration program, wherein the entity-level and user-level policies are applied with hierarchical priorities.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the querying step (b) comprises:

(b1) referencing a remote database;

(b2) determining a user system identifier and a user identifier; and

(b3) querying the system server for the entity-level and user-level policies for the user system identifier and the user identifier.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the creating step (c) comprises:

(c1) receiving the entity-level and user-level policies; and

(c2) creating the customized interface for the data migration program, wherein the creating applies the entity-level and user-level policies, wherein the entity-level policies have higher priority than the user-level policies.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the customized interface provides options allowed under the entity-level and user-level policies.

5. The method of claim 4, further comprising:

(d) receiving user inputs for the options; and

(e) performing the data migration.

6. A computer readable medium with program instructions for providing customizable data migration between user systems, comprising the instructions for:

(a) launching a data migration program at a user system;

(b) querying a system server for entity-level and user-level policies; and

(c) creating a customized interface for the data migration program, wherein the entity-level and user-level policies are applied with hierarchical priorities.

7. The medium of claim 6, wherein the querying instruction (b) comprises the instructions for:

(b1) referencing a remote database;

(b2) determining a user system identifier and a user identifier; and

(b3) querying the system server for the entity-level and user-level policies for the user system identifier and the user identifier.

8. The medium of claim 6, wherein the creating instruction (c) comprises the instructions for:

(c1) receiving the entity-level and user-level policies; and

(c2) creating the customized interface for the data migration program, wherein the creating applies the entity-level and user-level policies, wherein the entity-level policies have higher priority than the user-level policies.

9. The medium of claim 8, wherein the customized interface provides options allowed under the entity-level and user-level policies.

10. The medium of claim 8, further comprising the instructions for:

(d) receiving user inputs for the options; and

(e) performing the data migration.

11. A system, comprising:

a user system, comprising a migration program and a customized interface of the migration program;

a storage, comprising entity-level policies and user-level policies; and

a system server coupled to the user system and the storage, wherein the migration program queries the system server for the entity-level and user-level policies, wherein the migration program applies the entity-level and user-level policies in creating the customized interface.
