Abstract

A novel ventricular assist device is disclosed comprising a pump unit and a motor unit. The pump unit is made up of an impeller, an impeller housing, and a shaft. The impeller and/or the impeller housing are expandable, allowing for custom fitting and positioning of the pump unit within the ventricle. In certain embodiments, the shaft is adjustable, allowing for further customization of fit.

Claims

1. A ventricular assist device comprising:

a) a pump unit comprising;

i) an expandable impeller;

ii) an expandable impeller housing; and

iii) a shaft; and

b) a motor unit comprising;

i) a motor; and

ii) a motor housing.

2. The ventricular assist device of claim 1, wherein the motor unit further comprises a power supply.

3. The ventricular assist device of claim 2, wherein the power supply comprises one or more rechargeable batteries.

4. The ventricular assist device of claim 1, wherein said shaft comprises an inner shaft and an outer shaft, wherein the length of said shaft is adjusted by altering the position of said outer shaft relative to said inner shaft.
